HAVING WORKED AT A LEVEL 1 TRAUMA CENTER FOR YEARS, I RECENTLY CHANGED HOSPITALS TO A COMMUNITY ER. THE LINGO THAT WE USED AT THE TRAUMA CENTER DIFFERED GREATLY FROM MY NEW HOSPITAL. I AM INTERESTED IN HEARING LINGO FROM AROUND THE GLOBE.
SOME EXAMPLES:
LOL=LITTLE OLD LADY
MIMI=LITTLE OLD LADY
DFO=DONE FELL OUT (SYNCOPE)
AND MY MANAGER'S FAVOURITE ONE:
CCFCCP= COO COO FOR CO CO PUFFS
Hi Magik Girl,
Thanks for your reply and yes, you are certainly entitled to your opinion. However, if practicing as an ER attending really does cause you to write things like "TF BUNDY...TOTALLY FU***ED, BUT UNFORTUNATELY, NOT DEAD YET" on official medical records, then this is really quite a disillusioning thought. Lucky for me then that I will not be in such a situation for quite a while yet.
I can't help but think about what the previous person to post had at the end of their message:
The soul is dyed the color of its thoughts.
Think only on those things that are in line with your principles and can bear the full light of day.
The content of your character is your choice.
Day by day what you choose, what you think, and what you do is who you become.
Your integrity is your destiny -- it is the light that guides your way.
But it seems to me that comments like "the public we are speaking of probably can't read anyway" really do undermine our principles, character and integrity.
However, I do appreciate the need for light relief from what is undoubtedly a highly stressful situation.
Take care,
Jerry

I sure am glad you added that! :chuckle Iwas hoping you were not so dead serious all the time, especially in a place meant for camaraderie, fellowship, and decompression amongst nurses.
Being that you are going to be a doctor and won't actually have to "wait-on"the finer upstanding citizens who frequent emergency rooms accross the county, maybe you should check out this thread, or better yet, just hang around with us nurses for a while, and maybe you'll understand.

But there are hundreds of "stories" which nurses tell that explain the drying up of the gene pool, and the dumbing down of our fair citizens.
Like the group of women bringing the 20 lb 3 mo old baby in because he "threw up" (How many times=once on the way here=like, where were you going before that, nevermind=what did he eat last=1 jar of Gerber JR bacon cheeseburger=and we sue McD's for obesity =who can we sue for stupidity?)
Or the group(and it's always groups), who claim to have no money to go buy the febrile child generic apap, but all stink like ETOH and all have ciggy's in the pockets. Course that's not funny, but come to think of it, neither is the poor fat baby being force-fed.

My friend you have MUCH to learn.
First, and foremost, no one said anything about the "official medical resords".
We are venting not stupid or unprofessional.
Second, and almost as important, there is one lesson you REALLY must learn...DO NOT PI$$ OFF THE NURSES. It may be the kiss of death for you in your career.
And lastly, do not judge where you do not know.
Good luck in your career...everyone here is a caring compassionate professional who would loose their mind if not allowed to vent with those who understand.
Glad to hear it!
And don't think I do not realise the massive commitment and dedicated work of nurses. I've worked as a care assistant in a nursing home and have worked with nurses on busy wards and I have nothing but respect for them. And in my limited experience one thing I have learnt is that nurses can make the life of a doctor great or absolutely hell :chuckle. That's why I got a bit tetchy when I read the material on this thread because I didn't think it represented the attitutes, the care provided by and the professionalism of the nurses I've been in contact with. But if this, as you say, is indeed purely a way of 'venting' then I can understand that and have no problem with it.
Well it was good to visit this site (albeit unintentionally). Mabye I'll get a chance to work with some of you in the future if I end up migrating to the US (I'm from England). :)
Good bye and take care,
Jerry
Triple P syndrome (P cubed)
aka : PIS% POOR PROTOPLASM
I see the ER pts who graduate to unecessary surgery. Yes gramps is 102 yrs old, so lets have the Quadruple bypass to prolong his life. Never mind he can't see, hear or remember his childrens names. We don't use this lightly. We use it when we see a gross misjustice of our medical system or frequent flyer types who abuse our system.
I worked with a very jaded nurse who always charted a frequent flyer's complaints as: SSDD (same sh** different day). When I asked her how she was going to explain that one in court some day, she said she would say "same symptom, different day". And, my best friend, who is hispanic, LOVED the Status Hispanicus!!
I had a frequent flier come in one time, after we chatted a little while I said,"Well, what's the problem today, Ms. SusieQ?" She replied,"Oh, just go ahead and put down SOS on my chart!" We BOTH cracked up!
Another favorite for FTD is VFL. (vultures flying low)
I had never heard status Hispanicus, but I've had plenty of WWW(whiney white women) Even worse than that is WWWW(whiney white women with wet washcloth) You know, that kind that comes in, slumped in a wheelchair,a wet washcloth draped over her eyes, with her husband screaming,"Hurry! Do something for her! She's about to have a migraine!"
