Level of intelligence

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Going through nursing school, I have to say that it's overwhelming. They throw a ton of information at you all at once, most of which aren't on the exams (they don't tell you what information will be on the exams, either). It's so overwhelming that sometimes I think you have to be a genius just to pass these classes.

Then I meet nurses who are... well, let's just say they're not the brightest people I've ever met. Some of them have horrible grammer (they couldn't pass a 4th grade english class for the life of them), can't do math, and just have absolutely no common sense whatsoever. I worry for the people that these nurses take care of.

I've also seen some people post on this very site, posting things that don't make any sense with horrible grammer and exhibit no intelligence whatsoever... yet they're nurses. How the hell does that happen?

No disrespect meant towards anyone whatsoever, I'm not trying to upset anyone, but let's face facts, there are some less-than-average nurses out there, so how do they do it? Admittedly, I don't see them very often, but they're out there. That just scares me and confuses me at the same time.

How the hell did they get through nursing school?

Divest...NO ONE has any right to judge NO ONE, because at one point in your nursing future carrier, you will discover that at one point or many others you are a lower nurse than that DUMB nurse. And if you will not be enough Intelligent to accept this true reality.... all of your nursing life will be a nightmare fighting with yourself.

I hope that one day... you will be agree with me...till then...just love....

i think you made a good point to start- but maybe it could have been more thought out.... i think pointing out specific flaws is upsetting... for example - even though you did not mean to, you just insulted all of the nurses that have poor grammar. in the 2nd post you mentioned people who eat twinkies all day -lol i love twinkies :p...

i agree that there are a lot of nurses, cnas, ma's and even doctors - that you just wonder how they managed to skate through their programs... not because they are poor spellers or anything else - but because they just dont seem up to par when compared to another nurse or the knowledge they are suppose to have obtained in school.

i often wonder when i am in the doctors office - what days of class my doctor missed - and hope that doesnt affect me lol.

the health care system is far from perfect- but rest assured, that most likely if you have noticed a definite problem - if it is valid- others will notice it too.

I agree with you, Candygyrl. I did make the mistake of pointing out specific flaws, which is probably would triggered these people.

Anyways, I am done with this thread. If anyone wishes, feel free to post your comments, thoughts, concerns, or just close it, but I'm done posting in it. I don't feel the particular need to tip toe around my words, so perhaps the best course of action is just to avoid this particular conversation.

lol! go back to the Med Student website.

you know, i will say that while it seems some folks here, find the op condescending/judgmental, he does have a very valid point.

and that is, there ARE those nurses who scare the begeebeez (sp) out of you.

you're standing there, scratching your head, and can only think, "what the hell?!?!"

whether "intelligence" is partially responsible for these 'type' of nurses/folks, remains unknown.

but still...

you know the op's got a point.

it just seems that some took it a bit too personally.

but really, what IS it about those nurses??

honestly, i wouldn't know what to title this thread.

level of _______________??? (fill in the blank)

anyways....:spbox:

Why don't you wait to actually become a nurse and start working in a facility 40 hours a week before you start dogging less gifted individuals than yourself? There are weak people in every field out there....nursing is not excluded from that.

P.S. when you get the chance, go over doctors' notes! You'll be surpriced!lol

I don't think anyone disagrees that there are idiot nurses whom you meet and wonder "how did they pass nursing school?". The problem is that the OP comes across as a supercilious and judgmental orifice.

I do find it so amusing when someone posts criticism of others, doesn't like the replies they get, so they pack up their ball and go home in a huff. Funny stuff.

I think too many people are entirely missing the point. It's not about your insecurities, people. Stop cherry picking the post and hearing what you want to hear. My message is very straight forward and the first five posters or so understood what I was saying, I'm not sure where everything got lost in translation.

Again, as I detailed in my second post, everyone has their strong/weak areas and people make mistakes, this HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THAT.

It seems as if the point was entirely lost and everyone is stepping into defend these hypothetical figures. What's funny is that even though we haven't pointed fingers or used specific examples, everyone is quick to defend these people. I've noticed this in other threads as well. Perhaps you guys haven't experienced these same people that this thread is pointing out. They're out there, whether or not you want to acknowledge it, you just aren't understand exactly -who- we're talking about.

Some of these responses on the last couple pages or so are making me lol pretty hard given the context of the thread.

I think part of why this thread this home with people is because we can't control our inborn level of intelligence. Some people, no matter how hard they work at grades or anything other task in life, just won't measure up. You are right to say that being of below-average intelligence is different than making mistakes. Criticizing someone for being below-average (which they can't control) comes across as being a lot harsher than criticizing someone for making a mistake (which they can control). That may be why others are accusing you of being judgmental.

Also, I see from your profile that you are fairly young (22). I am not trying to be mean or condescending, but I think you lack the perspective that age brings. I can tell you that when I was your age, I was a lot less forgiving of others' flaws. I also worried a lot more about what other people might be doing or thinking or getting compared to what I was doing or thinking or getting. As I have gotten older, I don't find comparing myself to others to be so important. I measure myself against my own standards rather than outside standards. It's very freeing.

I know that isn't exactly what you are talking about in your post. I am hearing that you are frustrated to be an intelligent person working hard to obtain something that other people didn't have to work so hard for. Maybe that's not what you meant, but that's what I drew from your post. I used to feel like that, but as I have gotten older and quit worrying about other people, that kind of frustration/worry is gone. Yeah, that other person may have gotten by easier than I have, but it's not important to me anymore like it used to be.

I also don't worry about other's flaws either. Every one has their own unique value and gifts. Hopefully, as a group, our talents and shortcomings balance out when we learn to work cooperatively rather than competitively. The academic world doesn't prepare us for that, but it is a lesson I have learned in "real life."

I'm not sure how clear I"ve been with my thoughts, because I'm really tired. Hopefully I've contributed something valuable rather than a bunch of babble. :)

All I can say is--I have a hard time working with dumb people.

They annoy me.

I have to say that I have worked with some interesting nurses in different areas and wondered how long it takes them to tie their shoelaces. They frighten me, they are an extra burden on the rest of us staff because we have to pick up their mistakes to prevent patient harm.

But I don't believe that the nurses I"m talking about lack intelligence because they have poor grammar or like me need a calculator when trying to work out difficult medication doses. I think the problem lies in a lack of common sense which IMHO is absolutely essential in nursing. You need common sense to think critically, problem solve, prioritise care.
