Let's See Some Positivity! :)

Published

I am a high school student who is very hopeful about a future in nursing. After joining this website I've received tons of great advice and points of view on my own threads, as well as reading posts from other people. However, I've recently seen a lot of negative posts about nursing. It is okay to vent and be frustrated with your job... but it's seeming more like people are miserable in their career path.

SO, now, here I am, looking for a little bit of inspiration. Who LOVES nursing? What makes your job so rewarding? Please share stories. I would love to see some optimism!

i'm having a bit of trouble with the concept of a high school student who joins a professional nursing group and immediately reproaches the posters for being negative. in fact, i find it offensive. if you don't like negative posts, don't read them. and by the way, thanks for the permission to vent and be negative.

I am going to say it again!! Apologies in advance!!

Because I love the Nurses Wardrobe!!!!!

The scrubs are awesome, feel like getting to work in your pajamas, and contrary to other views, I think they are extremely sexy!

(especially with a labcoat)

:flamesonbHOT HOT HOT!!!!

I love the Stethoscope!!

(This is my stethoscope, There are many like it, but this one is mine. My stethoscope is my best friend. . .)

I love watching Medical TV shows, and never feeling lost, sometimes catching a blooper or two (we are all guilty of this).

I love being there for patients, especially the ones that fight so hard to regain their full independence, and the ones that can't-making their day easier, and brightening their spirits.

Holding the hand of someone who otherwise is tough as nails, but today happens to be scared to death for their life (and watching the fear in their eyes faid off or away.

I seeing a light go off in a patients head when they finally understand their disease process, and medical plan.

I love to walk or roll a patient out of the hospital, who was supposed to leave in a bag!, and see them start their second chance.

That reward that no can explain entirely, the X-factor of nursing practice, that warm reassurance from no where that you are in the right profession, and you are changing lives.

The communications two nurses can have together without speaking a word.

Heck, I even like the drama!, I just don't like to be INVOLVED with the drama. LOL!!!!!!

Great Luck on your Journey, Whatever you decide!!!!

Weigh the Negative Posts against the Positve Ones, Because they are both the TRUTH!!!!

I asked it politely the first few times. I tried giving it dagger eyes while tapping my foot. Finally had to take drastic measures. Stubborn little bugger.

If you have a strong "protector" instinct and you like dealing with people (as well as have the brains for A & P, microbiology, etc,) and good critical thinking skills, and ESPECIALLY if you know you want to be a nurse, I'd say go for it! I've been a nurse for 10 years, and was a tech for 7 years prior, and I can tell you I still love my job and get a big kick out of taking care of others. Nursing is very stressful annd challenging, but it is extremely rewarding, and I couldn't see myself doing anything else. Keep in mind, the place you work and your shiftmates make a huge amount of difference in whether you will like your job. I have absolutely hated some jobs but I found one that I really love--it may take some searching, but it's worth the journey. Even the nursing jobs I have hated I have learned from and become a better nurse due to the experience. Don't be discouraged by our "venting." Often AN is the only "safe" place we have to gripe about the things we don't like about our jobs, management, difficult patients/doctors/coworkers--so don't take it too much to heart. Best of luck to you and don't give up on your dreams!

I can honestly say that I wake up Every day and I am happy to go to work! I know you probably think I am full of it but I seriously LOVE being a Nurse and I LOVE my job! Does that mean that I do not have bad days or days when I come home wanting to pull my hair out? No! After 8 years of nursing in a SNF I definitely have horror stories of bad days, bad patients, and yes even bad co-workers.. But the reality of it is that I have always wanted to be a nurse and I enjoy what I do. I love to come in to work and see some of my patients and have them express how happy they are that I am their nurse for the evening. I am fortunate enough, in my opinion, to be a float. Upstairs is rehab and down is LTC. I enjoy the variety and the patients in general. When I am downstairs I get to see the "regulars" that honestly I view as my own family.. and when I am upstairs I get to meet new and wonderful people on a daily basis. The only part of Nursing that ever really gets me upset is to see co-workers bashing other nurses or fighting etc.. I try my best to stay out of the drama and that makes a huge difference. Sure there are times I would like to hop right in and carry on the conversation.. but I realize that all that would do is bite me on the butt... Therefore, I stick to the motto of "go to work, mind my business, and go home". It saves me a lot of hassle in the end and I am not at odds with anyone.. which is a must in any job.. You do not want to be fighting or on bad terms with co-workers... :)

No matter what type of work you get into there are days you want to quit! Trust me I've been working for 25 years and not all of it is nursing. I've only been a nurse about 9 months. However, with nursing it is so rewarding that you are actually saving lives, making a difference, and seeing people at their most vulnerable. I love my job, but at first I hated it, everything about it. Now, I take it with a grain of salt and realize each day is a learning experience to better improve my skill set and critical thinking skills. You get out of it what you put into it EVERYDAY! This is your life only you know what you'll like and dislike. You can't look to others to see how much they dread something and automatically decide that because they hate their job then you shouldn't be a nurse. You need to get into nursing for your own reasons and know that you MAKE A DIFFERENCE!! Good luck in your endeavors, you have so much to look forward to, remember put a smile on your face, put your best foot forward and YOU THINK POSITIVELY!!!!

People come to this site for all sorts of reasons, sometimes for laughs, entertainment, or just to vent....not all of it is positive. Just like nursing, you learn to accept the good with the bad. You'll understand this more when you actually become a nurse.

I recommend Rose Colored Glasses.

It won't make the post's any more positive, but you will see them in a new light.

I would recommend Paxil, but that would be medical advice, so I won't recommend that (I will just sit hit here and enjoy the benefits of it), lol. But anyway, even that takes 4 weeks to work!*

*This post is not condoning, nor promoting the use of SSRI's. Please see your family physician for medical advice. Ignore the Boston's use of SSRI's. SSRI's have many side effects that suck! SSRI's are not for everyone. If the seal on your medication is ever broken, it could be a Fomite. Fomites are bad. Fomites are nothing to play around with. In fact, one thing SSRI's do is make you less shy, so you are more likely to make long, useless posts that aren't positve or negative. If you have read through my entire post all I can do is apologize for wasting your time.

Do I love my job? Yes! I have patients who become family and patients I hope I never see again.

Is every day, hour, minute of my job fun, exciting and rewarding? No!

I need to complain to friends/co-workers and I come here read other peoples rants and know I am not alone.
