Doesn't it just drive you insane when someone tells you that Mr. Smith's O2 STAT is 96%?
It's O2 SAT people! Sat, short for saturation. I even hear respiratory therapists saying this. I am sooooo tempted to say something next time, but I know it's just petty, so I needed to vent here. Thank you.
I couldn't agree with you more!!! You forgot we're, were and where.
I am a NS and have been working in a diagnostic sleep center for the past 3 years. I still crack a smile/roll my eyes when patients call and say that they have "sleep acne" and that their "C-pac" isn't working. (it's sleep apnea and CPAP-said C pap)
sleep acne, like that one:yeah:
I got a little self-conscious now;how do you pronounce foramen ovale? frey-men o-va-ly?
Seretide Diskus (inhaler) Dis-kas or Dis-koos?
Oh I often hear many health providers, doctors even, say HIV virus. It should be just plain HIV, right?
Equipment with "s" (equipments) is wrong too Instead, say, pieces of equipment (as verified: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_plural)
same on foramen ovale...diskas for serevent or advair
In Australia we call 'em "blackboards" - because - wait for it - they're black! The white boards are called ... whiteboards. I have heard that USAmericans used to call them blackboards but had to stop in the late 1970s because it was offending some people to use the b word. Is that true or apocryphal?
or they became green?
I don't know if this is regional or what, but there used to be a guy called the 'green grocer' who had a spot on the news at noon in NYC on channel 11, he used to talk about vege-tables (the second half of the word pronounced like the table you eat on) and it used to drive me nuts. "Oh what a beautiful, fresh vege-table this is..." AACCKKKK!
Produce Pete! He's still at it...the Saturday today show:coollook:
wow, How about when americans destroyed your own name!!!!!!! I used to work as home health aid and the lady I was taking care of Used to call me "ZYB" IN my languge it 's mean pennies!!!!!!!! I told her 10000000 times my name is zynab. I think if i can say your name right why can't you say mine MRS isenqunsherbenstin{ just made it up}.
Here's an enlightening blog from a New York Times columnist, tattling about a few of the paper's mistakes. I found the comments section intriguing as well.My take on all of this is that no one writes or says everything perfectly, but I admire those who try. I especially admire those who try but do not use their knowledge and skill to make others feel small.
I love love what you just wrote. instead of looking for languge errors why not correcting them and admier the hard work of learning a new languge. IT is very very very hard to communicate in diffrent langage. I had to say that I met alot of positive people in this country. Thanks for all the positive people out there.

Hearing "you did good" is like nails on a chalkboard -- but as I live here now I need to suck it up.
I have left instructions for my family to shoot first and ask questions later if they hear me say that.
Two countries separated by a common language.....
