Laptop vs. Desktop for a student?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

hi, i am starting a bsn program this fall -- august 29th to be exact. i will be living in a dorm, visiting home once to twice a month. i am purchasing a computer soon (this week), and i was wondering: laptop or desktop?

i have about $800-$1000 in my budget to purchase a computer. (technically, i am getting it as a gift but i don't want to spend a lot of someone else's money.) i have a question to ask those of you who are currently enrolled in, or have finished nursing school. did you use a desktop or a laptop? i have already gone over the pros and cons of each type of computer (laptops being hard to upgrade, easy to steal, easily damaged, etc). the only thing that makes me even consider a laptop is the ability to take it to class and take notes.

i guess i am just wondering what your opinions are... from your experiences, did you find having a laptop to be a big, significant convenience, or did you manage just fine by taking handwritten notes?

thank you for your opinions. :)

Just being able to walk around the house and use my computer would keep me from purchasng a desk top any longer. I can sit outside, or watch what is cooking in the kitchen. If they are small enough and mine weighs only about 5 pounds, it will actually fit in my purse, yet with over a 15 inch HD screen.

Laptop. Extremely portable in the house. After sitting at a desk most of the day at school I like to be able to sit in my nice comfy chair and do homework. I can also take it with me if I'm going to have time during the day to do extra work.

I'm not in nursing school yet, but I say laptop, for sure!

You can take it anywhere in the dorms, house, campus....take it to the library, classes, *Starbucks*, back home when you go back for holidays, etc.

I like taking mine on vacations. I bought a car cord for it, and use it on the road while my husband drives. (I'm an excellent back seat driver.) LOL So, I study on the way to/from 1 hour or more trips. (or play games lol)

In hotels, I hook up to the internet & check e-mail, check Allnurses.com (of course) or whatever else I want.

I also like the ease of being in my bed with my laptop. LOL

IMO, Laptops are better. :) :Crash:

I still stick to Desktops.

I don't NEED a laptop. I'm not on the move that much. My campus is VERY wired.

Servicing and replacing desktops are easier. Upgrades are cheaper.

They are more rugged.

They are cheaper on the whole. I can splurge and get a better system on the whole. Or if my budget is really tight, I can order parts seperate and build my own PC.

The money I skimmed off can be used to pay for suck kick a$$ accessories - such as this bi-bad stereo system I bought :D

Most of this stuff I learnt when I was selling and repairing PCs for others for about 2 years - my own shop :)

True, true.....but I love being outside with my laptop enjoying the warm weather. lol

Ok....SOOOOOO

You can get PC's for cheap now. So, buy both! I bought my laptop off of Ebay. lol

I only use a laptop so I can access the wireless internet at uni (. I could go desktop now that the uni has switched from wireless to cable internet for students living on campus but a laptop is so much more convenient - I can take it over to library, go over to another unit while at uni, sit in the common room, best of all there is more space on my desk so I can spread all my books/notes out.

I'm contemplating getting a laptop as well. It just seems so much more conveint. Especially when I am rarely at home it feels. Also good for when I get to school before the computer lab opens.

I can see the plus sides to a desk computer. They are so big something just screams to me "not as easy for casi to break!"

Where I'm lost is I'm so far from computer smart, I have no clue what constitutes as a good computer anymore.
