I start my pre-req's for NS this Fall and was wondering if a laptop would be useful for school? I thought for taking notes, PP slides/lectures and studying (via internet sites) it would be a good investment. Also, what brand of laptop? I don't want to spend more than $600! Thanks for your help! :wink2:

Have you looked into NETBOOKS? They're slowly becoming popular with college kids these days and I'm actually really interested in them. Some good brands to look @are ACER, HP, ASUS, DELL or TOSHIBA! :) If I were you I would get a netbook because they're completely light (~2.5-4lbs) and they can usually fit in a purse or even just be held like a binder! You can also pick a cheap one up for $250-300 and they have all things you need- Internet, trial of microsoft word, powerpoint. Also when the trial expires so you don't have to put any money out of pocket you can get OpenOffice (basically a REALLY awesome free version of excel, word, powerpoint for FREE!!!) So basically all you'd need to spend on a computer is $250-300 and you're set!

I can honestly say I've only seen one or two people in my three years of prerequisite classes with laptops. If it's something that works for you, then that's great! But I really think it's a personal preference thing and may even vary by class and how each course is taught. :)

As for science pre-req's...I don't think it will be that useful when doing things like sketches for Anatomy, or formulas for Chemistry. I was thinking about getting one myself, but I'm going to wait and see how it goes when Chem starts.

I never used a laptop for my pre-reqs but I knew a few students who brought them. The funny thing was they never used them to take notes- they just surfed the web!!
If you can handle the temptation (some of those lectures go on forever!) of getting distracted than I dont see a problem in bringing one, although I dont think it's really necessary to go out and buy one for pre-reqs (unless you just want one anyways)

I bought one, but only because the majority of my pre-req classes (other than science classes) I will be taking online. It is nice to be able to access my classes from anywhere that has an internet connection.
Mine is pretty heavy though, and cost about $800. I wanted to make sure I had one with everything I could possibly need on it and one that would last me a while since I will practically live on it for the next few years.
I don't have any experience using it in an actual classroom setting though. I prefer to type rather than write so I am hoping it will come in handy. :)
