Langara Fall 2017

Published

Hi!

It's super early but I wanted to start a thread for those planning to apply to Langara for the Fall 2017 intake!

I am finishing one last prerequisite and will be applying as soon as applications open in November.

Who else is going to apply to this intake?!

Yes, so when I applied I went in and spoke with an advisor. Because I knew my GPA wasn't going to be high enough, I applied with a letter explaining why I will be amazing for the program, my paramedic transcripts, my resume including 6 years in mental health in the downtown east side and a letter of recommendation from one the the langara bio professors. The advisor told me that only GPA is considered for he first round then once they begin choosing applicants off the waitlist they look at all of the other stuff and GPA isn't the main factor. I am holding my breath right now. I don't think I could handle getting an offer in August! For September... but I would take it lol

Anyone applying to BCIT?

If you were given an offer from both BCIT and Langara, which offer would you accept?

That's is really awesome that you submitted a few other documents to show your experience and passion @civs :) I would love to do some kind of outreach nursing in the DTES. It would be great if they included other aspects besides just GPA.

Did the advisor give any idea what the cut off the would be this intake? I tried to find out lol but I was told they haven't finished selection so they can't tell me blah blah. Even a rough estimate would quell my nerves. I think they are tired of seeing my name in their inbox every intake lol

The advisor told me that if you have 3.5 your likely to get an offer. I mentioned in an earlier post that in the Jan 2017 thread there were a few people who got an offer with 3.0-3.2 as late as December! I am sure the offers will be gong out soon!

I am sooooo nervous :(

@warfarin I'm not eligible to apply for BCIT because of their extensive prerequisites and work experience requirements// much more competitive entry, but if I had the choice, I would go there. Their program is well known as being one of the best, and I like how you are able to specialize right away. Some of my more intelligent friends have been accepted there and loved their experience.

I also considered applying to BCIT, however one thing that really divided the two programs for me is that Langara has an ESN program whereas BCIT no longer does since you get paid in your final preceptorship. Both are excellent programs as I've heard, but ESNs are definitely at an advantage in terms of marketability as new grads.

That's really interesting about the ESN program, I wasn't aware that BCIT did not offer that. Def gives Langara an advantage

Yes, I heard that you are eligible to be an ESN by term 5. It's less expensive for hospitals that way compared to paying RNs in overtime (~2 x $33+/hr)

It's also beneficial in terms of applying to job postings because as an ESN you'll apply internally rather than externally.

Not too sure about the ESN program means for students under it-does it mean that ESN students are automatically listed in their staff casual list along with the employed registered nurses? If so, does it mean that ESNs would/wouldnt need to go through the normal job application process which theyd have to submit a bunch of documents and got through interviews and all that...

ESN program is good for students to develop some seniority or foundation where they are employed, and that is good for job applications too.

I'm getting so nervous just knowing we may hear back at the end of this week or next week!!
