Laid off after 38 years

Published

I am laid off after 38yrs of helping others as an RN. My place of employment finds it more cost-effective to hire LPNs and aides. I am single and on unemployment because a month ago, 4 RNS, all in their 50's and 60's were laid off on the same day. I am so angry! Isn't there anybody out there who is in the same situation? I don't have any family left, so my work is my life. I really need to talk to somebody in my situation! I am pretty scared and depressed-nobody is hiring in my area. Is there anybody out there, no matter what age, who is feeling the pinch of the economy? NURSE CHRIS

I am so sorry you are going through this. I also live in an area where it is difficult to find employment in nursing. I will keep you in my thoughts that a new perfect situation will come your way.

My prayers and thoughts are with you.

I cannot believe that they would lay you off after 38 years. Well, I hope that you find a job that you like even better then your last one. I am a CNA and have been out of work for 5 months but I am almost 8 months pregnant. I wish you all the best in your job hunt.

Wow, I'm really sorry to hear that.... :(

This sure sounds like age discrimination to me! Do you have any legal recourse? I worked with one manager that would hire many grads to cut costs without any regard for the extra load on experienced nurses and of course after a year the new grads would move on and she would start all over again.

Sorry to hear that. I wish you luck in finding something soon. I can relate to losing a job of so many years. It is a part of your identity -- and it is like a death is some ways. Try to contact some agencies in your area and see if they can find something for you.... Don't give up!

I was going to suggest the same thing about age discrimination. Yes, I had a recent period of unemployment myself. I couldn't even get any per diem shifts for weeks!

Try your state board of labor. File a complaint about the situation, explain that there were other people who were "selected" based on age.

did they say why? like was it because of of cost cutting or performance? maybe you can fight back. i think all the nurses that have been laid off this way should band together and make a whole lot of noise.

Sorry to hear of this. I was not too happy when I got laid off either. I suggest you contact the others and see if they would like to join you in seeking legal recourse. Best wishes.

It sounds like someone doesn't want to pay their employees the pensions they earned!!!

I would hire a lawyer and fight like %*&^ to get what you have earned.

Good luck!
