I work labor and delivery and I love it. No two nights are ever the same. Some quiet easy nights and some busy chaotic nights. For me, there is nothing in nursing that compares to watching a newborn baby come into the world and seeing a family grow. I feel honored and very lucky to be a part of the childbirth experience with so many families. I cannot imagine any nurse not loving it.
Good luck in your L&D nursing career.

My biggest passion. I think I am the biggest dope here. I never thought until yesterday to use the ob forum. Duh. A friend of mine is a l&d nurse and she hates it. Me personally, childbirth is a beautiful experience and I cannot wait until my turn!

It is fair to say that L&D nursing is not for everyone- it is challenging and the pace can change from hour to hour- the Doctors will expect the very best from you at all times and your patients will take every bit of energy from you- is it worth it -yes it is!
Hopefully, if you go through nursing school, as you do your clinical rotations, you will see more clearly what may work for you.
OB surely is not for everyone....but neither are ICU, ER, or other areas. Hopefully, you will see more clearly as you go through school, what you truly wish to do.
Good luck.

I am also thinking about being L&D nurse.. My only concern is having a mother or child die on my time...

If you could sum up in a sentence, what would you say that is the nurse's role in the deliery room?

I've been birthing babies for 30 years ( I can't believe it's been THAT long!) I still love it as much as when I started, though I do feel more comfortable...
It's the happiest place, and sometimes the saddest.
I often say there are no atheist in the Delivery room
my purpose in the delivery is to ensure my patient has the safest birth possible , as close to her plans as possible. and I am honored to be part f it

I watched "the business of being born" last week, and i cried for pretty much every birth scene. Did anyone else watch it? It made me think I should change my specialty...

I love that movie. Every time I see it it confirms why I want to be a L&D nurse/midwife.
I am currently an p/t OB tech and get to assist in the delivery room when I am not in the OR. I love my job and can't wait to finish nursing school and become a L&D nurse.
