We only wore ours when we would go the day/evening before clinicals for clinical prep, if you didn't feel like wearing scrubs. That meant, dress in business casual and slip on the lab coat. I only wore it once. I felt kind of tacky in it. From that point forward I wore my scrubs for clinical prep too.
When we were in the simulation lab at our school we could either wear scrubs or a lab coat. The explanation we were given was that it was another component that made the simulation feel real, as if we were an actor wearing a costume. Our lab instructor said that it makes it seem more real

Are you required to buy a lab coat for your program? I'm really just curious because it never crossed my mind that I would need one, and I've never seen a nurse wearing one. Do you wear it for clinicals? I'm just a little confused... :)
