when did you know whether you would like your job?

I am wondering when did you know whether you liked a certain job or not?

Did you know right away or did it take a while.

I usually know right away.

I started a job a few weeks ago and I hate it. I tried giving it a chance but it doesn't seem to be getting better.

I have only worked 1 job as an RN and I knew within a month it wasn't for me. Almost 2 years later I am still at this same job. Hoping to get out soon. I thought it would get better but it never did.

I started a new job 4 weeks ago. Loved the classroom portion of orientation, and the folks in my class. Clinical orientation, not so great. I am a VERY SEASONED/EXPERIENCED nurse, being oriented by new grads and inexperienced nurses who are clueless what I need. SOME are trying to teach me HOW to be a nurse, task completion, what and how to document, time management, etc.

Only ONE preceptor so far has asked about my previous experience and learning needs. She let me care independantly for my patients and was a resource for computer system and policy questions about HOW things are done at my new facility.

I just did my 30 day post hire survey and next week will meet with HR and my manager to discuss progress. Things will get better once I complete orientation I am sure.

Get through orientation, give is another month and see how you feel. Change is hard, just hang in there. Especially in this economy, be careful aboutr esigning without another job. Remember, agency is very unstable without a contract right now.

I am not finding the change hard. It's the OR environment where surgeons are rude and even other nurses are rude. I have never experienced rude coworkers before. All the nurse are bitter and burned out. They give us minimal staff and so many cases, it's rush rush rush. I have worked in OR before and it was nicer than this.

As a fellow OR nurse I feel you. The last OR I worked in was run by an ex-military director who forgot she was now Civilian. Physicians were always right and nurses were always wrong....NOT. the entire organization's demeanor was Physicians First.

I am sorry this isn't working out for your. Start looking around. Hopefully, you are in a right to work state. Probation is designed for the staff member AND facility to decide if it is a good FIT. Therefore, do not feel badly if you decide to leave during your probabionary period.

I am curious how things were during the interview process, I assume no inkling of toxic environment. Did you do share time in the OR? Look for another position. If possible don't quit till you have a new job. Can you go back where you came from????????? Just a thought.

Actually, it is a system wide protocol. They want to retain nurses and be sure they have sufficient orientation.

ALSO, I will be floating the entire hospital, Med/Surg, Neuro, Peri-op, ER, all step-downs....basically everything but ICU. (my ICU is 20 years old) but they are willing to cross train me down the road for that also. Last week the Director asked me to cross train as Administrative Coordinator also. Everyone REALLY DOES have the orientees best interest at heart. It is the individual NURSE/Preceptor. The system works extremely well for new nurses. I REALLY believe it is the young nurses' lack of experience and interaction with we experienced nurse. Thank JO for your support. I have been doing PRN agency for a long time and this is a benefitted float position. Just get through orientation and on easy street, two 12s a week, and make own schedule.

Wouldn't leaving during the probationary period make me not eligible for rehire?

I am still per diem at my old job.

I am looking for something new.

As long as you follow the hospital's/facilities' policy for giving proper notice you are eligible for rehire.

Share time is when you go and spend time on the unit you are considering taking a postition in. 4 to 8 hours shadowing a nurse there. You get to ask questions, tour the unit, meet the staff, talk with the charge nurse, clinical leaders, and manager.

Usually, the gut feeling I get with first contact at a facility is how it goes. I took a PRN postition this summer at a surgery center 35 miles from home becasue agency was no longer stable and it was the only offer. The salary was bad, not competitive, and the Administrator said, "I'm not calling my regional director again today. I already did that, the offer is more than our median salary". I should have known NOT to say yes. NON-nursing friends told me some money was better than cancellations. I've worked 5 shifts, never really oriented. Got called when not scheduled and expected to show up because the manager can not write on a calendar correctly.

Next time go with your gut. I know you posted about 2 offers, I am sorry it didn't work. OR is always my first love. At my current job everyone was pleasant and nice from day one. I saw first hand this week they REALLY DO NOT tolerate patients being abused by patients. Physicians are held to the same code of conduct as nurses and all other employees.

I hope you can find an organization in your area as positive as I have. What area are you located in? I have worked in 5 states in the OR among other areas since 1978 so Let me know if I can point you to a good facility.
