I get to do my first presentation! I was just informed by our school secretary that the nurse is always introduced the night of kindergarten round up and makes a little "speech" about kindergarten immunizations, the procedure to follow if the student needs medication at school, peanut safety, etc.
So, wise-ones-who-have-been-at-this-much-longer-than-me, what else should I make sure I cover?!?

We don't have a kg roundup thank goodness. That does not sound fun to me at all. They won't remember a lot of what you say so I'd make sure I gave them a handout with requirements to refer back to. I'd just say, I'm handing you a paper on the shot requirements (and whatever other requirements they have for kg. Ours need a dental exam, wellness exam, and all their shots.) I'd make sure I told them they won't be allowed to start without the required shots so they need to make an appt to get those completed as soon as possible if needed. Tell them the medication policy, peanut policy (if there is one), special diet process and exclusion policy (you will be called for fevers over 100, diarrhea, vomiting, pink eye, etc) and when their child can return to school. You may want to mention the lice policy and ways to prevent lice as well as telling them they should be keeping an eye on their kids hair so they don't expect you to. Also tell them to make sure to list ANY health issues their child has and you may be contacting them for more info. You may want to have medication and diet orders handy to pass out to those who may need/want one. I think that should about cover it! :)

Also add they should always have a clean set of pants and under ware in the child's backpack (kinders pee their pants… a lot). And make sure you get paid for your time at that round up. Yahoo :)

All of this - the exclusion policy for sure. Give them your email address to ask questions or give you a heads up about injuries or illnesses over the weekend/holiday/overnight. That is an awesome opportunity to get these parents off on the right track. You can also explain you will be doing hearing/vision screenings as well. Make it fun!

Maybe a two minute presentation on when to keep them home. I have parents that keep the kids home for a runny nose, and then send the kid to school with a temp of 101!

i like to use that opportunity give fair warning that students with incomplete vaccine records, missing shots, no physical, etc that they will not be permitted to start on the first day unless all requirements are met. I also use that opportunity to go over medication policy and reinforce the 24 hour policy.
I bring a stack of med forms, asthma action plans and allergy action plans with me along with some extra physical forms for anyone needing them. i usually get a few takers.

Our Kinder Roundup (really just early registration) is a week long during the school day, there is one day that registration extends to 7pm. I will stay with the data clerk on the late night to answer questions, check shot records, hand out action plan forms etc. If a parent has questions during the day, the data clerk calls me and I will come out front to answer questions, review shot records etc.
We have a Kinder Orientation night the week before school starts - teachers review all the details with them during that time - I introduce myself and am available for questions, collect meds & forms etc after the parents have their tour.
