Hi there.. I failed the first time I took NCLEX 265Q self study using saunders book just this year so I took KAPLAN review online. I am committing for the schedule they provided to follow after the end of the class. I am now starting doing their Q banks my scores are low I did 17% of the questions and only did 53% correct answers!!! Any advice and words of encouragement?? I'm planning to take my exam next month last week of Dec.
@ littleone17: It seems to me all questions are about the same. They all consist all content areas, but worded differently. At the beginning, I got low scores too and gradually increases with my Q-Banks.
Trainers Questions: more questions (timed)....I have to sit longer....tired...brain freeze sometimes.
Q-Bank Questions: less questions (timed). Kaplan recommended 50 questions / test (timed, in 1 sitting). I don't have to sit long. No brain freeze :)
And I think if you scored low at the beginning is because you're not getting used to the questions yet or not getting used to sit for a long time doing lots of questions. Just practice and read all the rationales after.
I was so behind on my first week schedule because I spent too much time taking notes while reading the rationales. Now, I am used to the questions ...I read faster and can manage the time better now.
Practice makes perfect!
I have 62% of the Q-Bank questions done, and my average score is 62% correct.
Melai12, as long as you are improving...that's a good sign! Keep up the good work!
Has anyone used ATI to study for the NCLEX? How was it? If you have used both ATI and Kaplan, which one did you like more? Which one is closer to NCLEX questions?
Thanks for sharing!
Hi everyone! This is my first time posting on allnurses, but I visit this site on occasion to read threads on the NCLEX-RN. I'm taking the CA RN boards this Thursday, and I'm very nervous. It's comforting to know that there are others who are experiencing the same anxiety.
My school provided access to the Virtual ATI review, but I thought that this was a complete waste of time. I wouldn't recommend ATI to anyone! I'm a poor test taker, so I decided to take the KAPLAN review course. This is a great tool to help you understand what the question is asking and it definitely helps you analyze the critical thinking questions. I took the In-Class Kaplan course, and here's a few highlights that my teacher shared with us:
1. Aim for a 60% OVERALL average on your question bank questions
2. If you're scoring in the high 50's, low 60's on individual QBank test, you're in good shape and you're ready for the NCLEX.
3. If you're scoring in the low 50's on individual QBank tests, hold off on the NCLEX until you score higher.
4. Save Question Trainers 6 & 7 7-10 days before your NCLEX. These tests are the most similar to the NCLEX in length and question content (all critical thinking questions). Aim for 60% on both.
5. Remember that the NCLEX is testing the safety of the nurse, not knowledge content. Know how to apply this knowledge.
6. Expect to get half of the test questions right, and half of them wrong.
I realize these scores may not seem encouraging, but I guess you just have to trust their system. Make sure you are using their decision tree for every question you answer!! This is key to being successful with their program. Good luck and be confident in yourself!
If it helps.. here are my Kaplan scores. I'll let you know how I do on Thursday.

I'm doing 100- 200 questions /day. Sometimes I get behind because I spent too much time going over the questions. Right now I have done 50% of my Q-Bank questions and my average score now is 61%.
