Hi, I will be starting the RN program with Kaplan as soon as we relocate. My husband's in the Military so the wait lists at other colleges turned me away from them.
Do any of you go to Kaplan? If so, how did it work out for the student loans and stuff , I am confused. It seems as if tuition is around 45000 for the couple years of the program. I am eligible for the pell grant and the military grant of 3000 per year. But would the loans be able to cover everything else since it's a vocational school more than a traditional college? Thanks!
Thanks for responding,
Yea, I have worked in my brothers dental office for the past 2yrs. They said that qualifies me...he can also write me a letter of rec. I havent taken too many pre reqs that would qualify for nursing (just english and stuff).
Im going to the school tomorrow prayinggggggggggggggg that i get in for Jan...sounds like it wont happen though with everyone trying to get in and the school only accepting 50 students. I dont want to wait another few months
Im hoping tomorrow goes well at the info session and that there are no deal breakers about the school. Im just more concerned about the loans now. I will definantly apply for financial aid and fed loans but I know ill need private loans. Im trying to get myself fully funded by loans for the next two years (housing and other expenses) as my family cannot support me. Im hoping that its possible! ...

Dont worry too much as long as you meet all the requirements and pass all the tests you will get in. I was worrried i wouldnt get in but i did and soo did alot of other ppl. I know there is alot of applicants but since kaplan has 3 start dates every yr it can accommodate most if not all applicants.
Thanks Kessy!
Do you know anything about the student loans? Im not sure if this is possible but Id like to take out enough to support me for the two years ill be going there. I know that sounds crazy to some people but its the only way Id be able to move to SD and get through the program.

well they take 45 for the generic nursing program + 15 for the LVN to RN program = 60 but they do take 10 extra people (alternates) if the 1 of the 45 cant start in January. I was #8 in the alternate spot and eventually got in before school started so even if you make the alternate list, you'll eventually will get a spot in January. My big concern is try to get an 80% or higher on the TEAS test your 1st try then you shouldnt worry about anything else after (unless you turn in your paper work late which is a big NO NO!!!) Anyways, good luck with everything you'll do good. Please keep me updated about this "journey" you'll be embarking on and if you have anymore questions, please feel free to ask

Well it all depends.. Because in my situation i took all the prereq. and received fafsa $1400 and 10k from student loans along with 10% off tuition for being a military spouse and still ended up having to pay $3000 out of pocket. around 10k is the max you can get from federal student loans and even less if your considered a dependent student or below your junior yr in college. First yr in the program is around $14,500. So your best bet is to see what financial aid would give you and also apply for the cal grant (deadline already passed). And if your planning to use loans to get you by get a roommate =)..
im so nervous i have been preparing for my teas test for the upcoming nursing class in Jan. i completed my MA at kaplan to get ready for nursing, can anyone tell me if the TEAS test is as complicated as i'm assuming? And how long is it before u get ur scores? i managed a 4.0 throughout the MA program and i am sort of a geek :), but i also have a tendency to be extra hard on myself when it comes to passing a test (or anything for that matter) and succeeding in something i greatly want. Please someone ease my worries!

wow a 4.0 in the MA program good for you. Well at least you are preparing for the TEAS right now so you should be in great shape when taking it. You get your scores RIGHT AFTER you finished the test and it breaks it down what you're good at and what you need to improve on. Like i said on my past postings, aim to get an 80% or higher on the 1st try (varies) and you'll have no problem getting in for January
Not to burst your bubble but the MA program and the ADN program are two DIFFERENT systems of they own. I studied to become an MA myself and i graduated with honors then going into the ADN program and i was just blown away of how difficult this program is compared to the MA program. But, just study REALLY HARD and try to grasp the concepts in every nursing class and you'll do fine.

I only looked over the things i needed to review. The TEAS was pretty much stuff you learn in highschool so i pretty much went over things I dont really remember. Btw what is MA??

Well i made the move from LA to SD for nursing school. Um to get in you have to have a bachelors degree or have 6 months+ medical experience. you have to pass the sld (or whatever its called) and get a 23 or 24+. once you pass the 1st test then you have to pass the TEAS test to get in (a good score is getting an 80%+ on the 1st try but it varies). turn in all transfer credit, letters of work experience or/and degrees for a portfolio and wait if you get in
