Kaplan college in San Diego RN program

U.S.A. California

Hi, I will be starting the RN program with Kaplan as soon as we relocate. My husband's in the Military so the wait lists at other colleges turned me away from them.

Do any of you go to Kaplan? If so, how did it work out for the student loans and stuff , I am confused. It seems as if tuition is around 45000 for the couple years of the program. I am eligible for the pell grant and the military grant of 3000 per year. But would the loans be able to cover everything else since it's a vocational school more than a traditional college? Thanks!

Can you PM me? I am in the same position as you and wanted to ask you a few things...

I will be meeting with a rep at Kaplan College's San Diego location next month regarding their 20 month ADN program. In the meantime, if anyone has experience with this school, since it changed from Maric, please tell me about it. Thank you John

Hi John,

I am also very interested in the RN program as well. After your meeting can you give me some info on hours, price etc. We are moving to SD next year so I am just looking ahead.

Thanks!

I think Kaplan was Maric College before. I know of a nurse who graduated from Marics ADN program and is having difficulty finding a school who will accept her courses at Maric. She wants to get her BSN but the courses she took thorugh the college is what's holding her up.

I will be driving out to see a rep at Kaplan College on December 18th. I will post any important info I get regarding their ADN program after Christmas. I already know the negatives: High cost and lack of regional accreditation, i.e. WASC. John

This is because Kaplan / Maric does not have proper accreditation (college, not nursing; these are seperate). However, I believe University of Phoenix will accept their courses due to some agreement.

No other WASC accreditated school will accept their credits.

Can I ask you what military grant you're referring to? My husband is also in the military but I am not aware of any grants.

Thanks!

I too heard that University of Phoenix accepts Kaplan if you want to pursue your BSN. :)

I am a med/surg nurse and have had Kaplan students on the floor. I was VERY impressed with them and their clinical instructor. The instructor was pleasant and so calm. We all knew we could count on Kaplan students to take good care of our patients, do the charting, and keep us informed of patient status, and inform us when they (the students) were leaving the floor.

Kaplan students have respect because they perform so well. It must be a great nursing program because I've seen the results.

I am attending Kaplan right now going through the PCAT program as a step up to the RN program. I had planned to apply for the Sept 09 session and thought that going through PCAT it would give me an advantage, but from what I hear...it may not. They only accept 50 students and it all depends on your TEAS score AND past experience in the medical field. They require that you have at least 6 months hospital/medical experience, but the more the better.

My question to any RN Kaplan students, do you think staying in PCAT will help? I already have the required experience and I already passed the entrance test (not TEAS)so I was told that I could apply, but as I mentioned, I thought PCAT would give me a better foundation for the RN program. Now I am thinking about dropping out of PCAT and focusing all my energy on getting into the next RN Program. Can you give me any suggestions on this? Is the RN program extremely more difficult than PCAT? I am breezing through PCAT right now with a 3.98 GPA, so I really feel I can go right into RN. What do you think? Any tips would be greatly appreciated.:thankya:

If you attend an RN to BSN program, some will give you lower division credits in nursing automatically because of your nursing license. It has nothing to do with what school you graduated from. I got my LVN and am getting my RN at private institutions.

The cal state that I was at before just uses my nursing license to give me the lower division on credit. Many of the cal state's work that way. (I also was an employee at that campus and knew the nursing department and their regulations well).

So for those of you who worry a lot about your school not being accredited and giving credit. Call a local nursing department's program. You might be surprised.

And Good luck to all!
