Kaplan college in San Diego RN program

U.S.A. California

Hi, I will be starting the RN program with Kaplan as soon as we relocate. My husband's in the Military so the wait lists at other colleges turned me away from them.

Do any of you go to Kaplan? If so, how did it work out for the student loans and stuff , I am confused. It seems as if tuition is around 45000 for the couple years of the program. I am eligible for the pell grant and the military grant of 3000 per year. But would the loans be able to cover everything else since it's a vocational school more than a traditional college? Thanks!

Specializes in None yet.

I scheduled an appointment with Kaplan College in October and I was told the same thing. Although, I will have to have medical exprience and the first would be to go through their patient care program. I will be starting in Feb 09.I have no medical experience what so ever, but I've dreamed of becoming a nurse and that would be my first goal. How is the class?

PCAT classes are very easy so far. I've been getting straight "A's" but I've been in the medical field for 8 years already. I'm thinking of dropping out and getting geared up for the TEA's test and apply to the next RN class, which will be in May (too late for January's class). Good luck chamorru671angel.

please fill me in on their selection process for the adn.Is it a waiting list how many apply is it a point system????just curious im a nursing student from las vegas know some people interested in kaplan aka maric please lemme know???BTW Im originally from sd gotta rep!

I'm hoping that with Kaplan things will be different but in the past when it was Maric they had a very low pass rate for the boards and I know a lot of local hospitals would hire other nurses who went to other schools over Maric students.

My sister is currently taking classes there and seems to like it so I'm hoping they've changed for the better.

still need info on how you get in or selection process as of now???

I have been in the medical field for many years and I'd have to agree that Maric's reputation hasn't been the best. JohninAZ

Kaplan has a much better rep than Maric, from what I hear and the NCLEX pass rate is much higher than you would expect (even as Maric). My sister is an RN and worked at many hospitals in SD and says she worked with several graduates from Maric. It's the best way to go if you want to get in and out quickly so you can begin your career.:nurse:

The following is from a guideline sheet that I received from Kaplan:

Individuals are considered for acceptance into the nursing program based on their ranking, which is determined by three main categories: Standardized testing, work experience, and graduate/alumni status.

1. All applicants must take the Wonderlic SLE examination, only scores 24 or higher are eligible for acceptance into the program.

2. Upon successful completion of the Wonderlic SLE, all applicants must take and submit one of the following standardized testing for review: TEAS, ACT, or SAT. (ACT or SAT must be within 5 yrs).

3. All applicants must have at least 6 months of healthcare experience prior to starting the program. Students will receive points for current healthcare experience (must be within the last two years) based on length of employment. A letter of recommendation from employer and proof of employment must be provided in order to receive points).

4. Applicants who have previously earned an academic degree or graduated from Kaplan will receive points toward acceptance into the program.

Hope this helps.

Thats good!!thank you...

How many people will they accept and.. how many apply???

They take 50. My admissions rep (aka sales person lol) said that they had 90 applicants this time. She said its usually around 100-150.

I did 9yrs in the Navy as a Corpsman, honorable discharge. I still work for the Navy in the medical field. I have my bachelors in bus. admin and many credits for my masters in HR.

I applied and passed the SLE and did alright on the TEAS. I was contacted by my rep that I was selected but then disqualified from the program because I had 2 car window tint violations on my record.

My counselor told me not to get discouraged but to get a lawyer to try and expunge the violations from my record and try again.

I didn't want to spend so much time working on my pre-reqs (bio, chem 1+2, a+p 1+2, etc.) so that's why I was looking into this program. I was also told they have an agreement w/ UoP for a BSN.
