Kaplan college in San Diego RN program

U.S.A. California

Hi, I will be starting the RN program with Kaplan as soon as we relocate. My husband's in the Military so the wait lists at other colleges turned me away from them.

Do any of you go to Kaplan? If so, how did it work out for the student loans and stuff , I am confused. It seems as if tuition is around 45000 for the couple years of the program. I am eligible for the pell grant and the military grant of 3000 per year. But would the loans be able to cover everything else since it's a vocational school more than a traditional college? Thanks!

that's silly! window tint?!

anyhow I would try and correct that and keep trying! I know trying to be a nurse in SD is a hassle! Keep us updated I am sure there are others that can relate on here or would like to here what happens! How many people do you guys think are applying this Jan.? and are people who are lvn-rn bridges in the same program as everyone else? Are they seperate from applying with everyone else also?

I know. All my friends are just bewildered too! They thought I was a 'lock' for it given my credentials and that the window tint violation was such a ...as you say too...silly.

IIRC, my counselor said that like 50 (+10 alternates) started in the last class and 25 graduated.

The alternates begin the program and are used to fill in for those who drop for various reasons (financial, family issues, change of heart, etc.).

I've been wanting to get into nursing for so long but spending many years just to get the remaining pre-reqs and getting on a waiting list just seemed sooooo long.

I'm a current lvn-rn bridge student at kaplan and for the first semester we have a transition course with only lvn-rn bridge students but are in basically in all the same classes depending on what prereq's you need to complete. adn students who aren't lvn's take the foundations course which we are sometimes mixed into although we mostly go with them into labs but get out earlier since it is mostly review for us. LVN-RN students are included in the 50+ that get accepted since that is the only room they have as far as clinicals. No clinicals first semester. 2nd semester bridge students don't have to take pharmacology. Bridge students are mixed with full program students for clinical rotations.

Specializes in oncology,obgyn,pediactrics.

mareeh77, when you say that there is no clinical in the first semester is that for all nursing students, LVN and ADN?

yes, all 1st semester students are not in clinicals for the 1st semester. We are actually the first class on the kaplan semester system. They use to start clinicals in 1st semester but changed it when our class started this past september.

They want to make sure that everyone has a good foundation before beginning med/surg rotations so that you aren't a complete idiot on the floor

I was told that they start you in clinicals the first semester, but my initial appointment was with someone else (my lady was sick) so maybe she didnt know the program had changed. I think it makes WAY more sense to let us get our feet wet for a semester first.... then throw us in! lol

Mareeh, How do you like it? Do you feel that you are getting a quality education?

It's actually more intense than i thought it would be. Just as a note, if you plan on transferring credits in, make sure to get all of your transcripts in before the scheduled date. I was late and had to redo all of my science classes. I was upset at first, but I've come to terms with it. The gen. ed. courses for a&p and college algebra are actually good quality college courses. These classes are taught by instructors that teach at local community colleges as well. The nursing class for students doing the full program is actually better structured than the bridge program for the 1st semester. So far, I don't really have anything major to complain about. I'm not going to say that I won't have anything to complain about later. I only wish that I had decided to enroll sooner.

You also have to remember that your experience is what you make of it and the same thing is true in regards to your education.

Hi. I was all set to go to KAplan, then Maric but after talking to several charge nurses, nursing recruiters and nursing school instructors decided against it. I am a military wife too so I was blinded by the NO WAIT LIST but while that is great, the school isn't regionally accredited. I checked with quite a few universities, both in San Diego and in other states and NOTHING from Kaplan/Maric would transfer. I've been doing the nursing school go round in San Diego for 5 yrs so if any of you military spouses have questions, please ask. Remember there is a CAA grant that you get if your spouse if at certain bases. I have that info too. Good luck! I wish you all the best!

Kaplan credits will transfer to a few schools Univ of Phoenix I believe is one of them. You are lucky if you have been in SD for 5 years. We move every 2-3 years so I really don't have any choice, I can't wait on a list plus the school time, we would have moved by them. I agree, that it will be more difficult to find a school to get your BSN, but if you get an ADN ( or LPN) from them you are still an RN (or LPN) and will be anywhere you move, of course after you apply for a license in the state you move. Thanks for the heads up on the CAA grant, anyhting will help! Good luck on what you decide to do!

Thanks for the info Mareeh77, I am currently in the PCAT program with plans to apply to the RN program in Sept '09. I am currently holding a gpa of 3.95 which hasn't been too difficult to obtain as long as I don't miss any lecture days. I'm assuming that the RN program is much more intense and I probably would be lucky to hold a 3.00. My class was recently told that only students with a 3.95 or above can apply to the RN course. Anything less they would have them apply to the LVN? Not sure if this is true, I was initially told that your TEAS & past healthcare experience is what they look at. Do you know any different?

mchuffy--my sister was an RN here in SD for 10 years before moving to AZ. She worked with several Meric RN's and said they were just as good as other schools. Don't let anyone cheat you out of your dream when you can get there that much quicker. I was talking a prereq class a semester while working full time and did that for 5 years before enrolling in Kaplan. It would take me another 5+ years just to start my RN program. I'm hoping I will be working as an RN by that time going to Kaplan. Just a thought...but good luck whichever route you go.
