Hi, I will be starting the RN program with Kaplan as soon as we relocate. My husband's in the Military so the wait lists at other colleges turned me away from them.
Do any of you go to Kaplan? If so, how did it work out for the student loans and stuff , I am confused. It seems as if tuition is around 45000 for the couple years of the program. I am eligible for the pell grant and the military grant of 3000 per year. But would the loans be able to cover everything else since it's a vocational school more than a traditional college? Thanks!
I really want to emphasize not to go the LVN route with any private school, Kaplan or otherwise. Do you really want to pay $30,000 for the LVN degree? Will you be able to earn that much money as an LVN? You can get it so much cheaper if you go to City College LVN or Grossmont Health Occupations Center which is where I graduated from. They charge $2,500 for the program and half the students attending qualified for the Carl Perkins grant which paid the tuition for them. Program included uniforms and books too!
But don't do LVN if you can do RN! I work med/surg and get paid much less than the RN because I'm an LVN. As an RN you can find a job anywhere in San Diego and start out at $30. (As a new LVN I'm paid half that!) Some places might pay less for a new grad RN or more for LVN.
If Kaplan accepts you as an RN student then great. Once again we had Kaplan students on our floor and they are terrific. Good nurses, great people. :) I think it would be worth going into debt to go thru RN school. That is good debt. I just don't think the debt for LVN is worth it.

Faeriewind,
I understand what your saying but people like me (military spouses) don't really have a choice. I can't wait on a 2 year waiting list when we are only in a spot for 2-3 years at a time.
Ohhhhhhhh. Now I understand. But I thought Kaplan didn't have a wait list or not much of one anyway. Like just a few months. And you take your pre-reqs along with your nursing classes if there are pre-reqs you haven't taken yet. Perhaps someone could comment on how long it took to get into Kaplan RN. It would be good to know.
hello! im actually in the LVN program at Kaplan right now. I applied in December 2008 and started classes at the next start of classes which was this past January. I took two entrance tests to get in however. The SLE and HESI test are the only requirements to get in Kaplans LVN program.I took a few courses (not pre reqs) such as psych and nutrtion at a community college that I am getting credit for along with the pell grant and my tuition will actually be about half of the $30,000. That is still expensive but the time schedule is practicle for me being a single mother and having to keep my current job during the day to survive. People spend $30,000 and up for a brand new mercedes or bmw so why not use that money to further your education and start a career that could last a lifetime? just something to think about...

They don't have a wait list but you do need to pass the TEAS with a score of 95% and have 6 months or more previous medical experience to even be considered.
Hello, SanDiegoNursetobe--I'm interested in where you decided to go to do your RN and why you decided against Kaplan. I'm considering Kaplan after taking some pre-reqs at a CC and getting tired of the time passing by. I've looked into most of the pros and cons but am very interested in hearing from people who've actually gone there for whatever classes. Thanks.

I can't figure out how to send you a private message. I want to ask you more about your experience at Kaplan. Can you contact me with your address??
Thank you!!!!
