Kaplan college in San Diego RN program

Published

Hi, I will be starting the RN program with Kaplan as soon as we relocate. My husband's in the Military so the wait lists at other colleges turned me away from them.

Do any of you go to Kaplan? If so, how did it work out for the student loans and stuff , I am confused. It seems as if tuition is around 45000 for the couple years of the program. I am eligible for the pell grant and the military grant of 3000 per year. But would the loans be able to cover everything else since it's a vocational school more than a traditional college? Thanks!

As far as the schedule goes, it depends on the semester...and how many classes (nursing, GE) you are taking at a time. I had all of my GE's done so I don't know what your schedule will look like if you are taking nursing courses and GE's. I will say that so far as a general rule (and this is "subject to change" as they like to say) most classes start no earlier than 8am and I've never gotten out of class later than 5pm, so I think that's a safe estimate but I don't know. Clinicals are the exception...most start at around 6am and some are even on the weekend (that's right I said the weekend-you will have no life in nursing school)!!! But that can also vary depending on the facility and instructor. The tough part is you don't usually find out about your clinical schedule until the very last minute...sometimes the week of or week before you start your rotation so it can be very challenging if you are dealing with work schedules or childcare.

Hope that helps you guys...good luck with everything!

Our fundies class started at 730 most of the 16 weeks. And so far that has been the only class that starts prior to 8. I am about to enter 3rd term, which starts on monday the 14th, and we should find out our clinical schedule for the following week then. so we will find out our clinical site and time 1 week prior to starting clinicals.

I can't figure out how to send you a private message. I want to ask you more about your experience at Kaplan. Can you contact me please with your address??

Thank you!!!!

I would like to know how your experience was at Kaplan. I just decided to go back to school myself and would like to know more about Kaplan's ADN program and if this would be well worth it? I did just signed up for an online program but just found out it was for a Medical Assistant....not what I wanted! So I'm waiting to hear from my counselor to see if I can switch and maybe do the online/campus (Labs & Clinics). I was told that would help me to become an RN but after reading the blogs and friends advice I know that is the wrong direction. I thought Kaplan was an accredited school with a great Nursing program?

I'm almost finished with the ADN program at Kaplan in San Diego. I think it's a good program, but you have to be focused and you have to be dedicated to the program. It's extremely time consuming....but all nursing programs are. In the beginning of the program many students work, but once you get finished with your first semester.....most have to stop working in order to keep up.

There are many different opinions about the quality of the program. I've found that most of the instructors and most of the students are really good. The program is intense but it has to be to get students out and able to pass NCLEX. The best advice I can give is to work with one admissions rep and to go to the same person for information and questions. The program is fast paced, so it works best for people who like that type of learning and are able to stay focused and organized.

Good luck in your decision!

Is anyone hoping to start Kaplans ADN program in January 2010?? thats my goal!! Im taking the TEAS saturday the 17th and I am very nervous any tips or pointers?? I already bought the ATI study guide.

Any kaplan ADN students I'd love to hear how you feel about the program. :D congrats to everyone who is almost done with the program way to go!!!

Hi,

I too, am praying to start the RN Program at Kaplan January 2010 Good Luck with your upcoming test! I take my TEAS on the 23rd of this month. :yeah:

hey everybody - new here. lurking around and decided to register couple days ago. I have a question regarding Kaplan/Maric College RN program. I'm hoping to start jan. 2010. i still need to take the TEAS and plan on doing so very soon. they told me the deadline to enroll was nov. something. i cant remember. anyhow..

my question is .. do you have to be a CNA first or have cna experince inorder to get accepted into the program? or do you learn all that during the program? and if so, (from reading posts around here) why do they reccommend you having CNA first?

I spoke with the rep and because I am kind of working in a ltc that it should be fine. but im just concern that if i am to go thru the program, would i be at a disadvantage because I dont have the skills a cna does? I dont know how to fix the bed, turn the patients, bed bath, etc.. Am i suppose to know how to do all this prior to starting? I guess thats my concern..

also how is everyone financing this? 50g is alot of money. im not sure if i would be able to take any loans out because my credit is bad :( ... sorry for the long reply but if anyone has any input or anything, that would be greatly appreciated. thank you guys in advance.

hope to start jan. 2010! :D

so is the healthcare experience mandatory? or only worth points? i have a degree and high teas score. so if work experience is only for points, i would guess i am still competitive.

I am applying for the Jan 2010 cohort, I also have a 4 year degree with no medical experience. I did not have to take a CNA course or get any medical experience to apply. What my counselor told me is that you have to have a 4 year degree OR medical experience. I have my ap all put in, and I'm just waiting for december to find out if I get in. :D

I took my TEAS yesterday, the deadline is Nov. 20th (?) something like that. I would suggest taking the TEAS very soon, if you haven't already so that you don't miss the deadline. Once you take the TEAS you will have to do a background check and urine test, all due before the application deadline. They are offering it Nov. something one last time before the deadline date, however you can also take the TEAS for almost double the cost $45, plus another $25 to have the results sent to Kaplan at SDSU. I would hurry and get in at Kaplan to take it and save yourself some money, then if you need to you can spend the extra money to take it at SDSU for a better score worst case scenario.

GOOD LUCK!

Can someone tell me what will be on the SLE test?

wow this very helpful. i actually have an appointment on monday to meet with a kaplan council.. I also have a degree and trying to get a ADN... where do i take the TEAS test?

at kaplan, i think you can go anytime during the weekday to take the 12 mins sle test. i think they give one like every 30mis or so. im not sure. you can call the front desk and ask..but they test you on that first... then after you pass the 12min sle test, you can take the teas. they give that out i think twice a moonth. the deadline for jan. 2010 is the 20th of nov. i beliieve... and the passing score for the teas is 75% ... they have lvn and rn programs there. tuition is alot though...

Hi!

I just met with a counselor last week, I was informed that in order to get accepted into the program, 1. you needed to be a graduate of Kaplan, 2. You needed at least 6 months experience working in a hospital or direct patient care, 3. Needed to pass the SLE with a 25 and 4. at least a 75% on the TEAS..... so what he recommended to me was that I enter the CNA program at Kaplan thats a 2 month program and then I would work as a CNA for four months untill I would apply for the RN program that begins in Sept 2010. What do people think of this? Is this a good way to go? I really am just a little discouraged because I am getting so many different opinions on Kaplan and what not. If anyone could give me some advice or anything I would greatly appreciate it!
