Just wanted to say I hate nursing soooo much

Don't get me wrong where I work I am nice to all of my patients and give them excellent care, my boss and coworkers love me and love working with me. I get many patient satisfaction cards all the time.

Inside I am dieing, I get anxiety just thinking about going to work. Even on my days off when the day to works gets close I am already anxious about going to work.

Short staffed, high acuity patients, 1 CNA for the whole floor etc...

Just wanted to let it out again. I will quit nursing I am just working on a business and when it reaches enough monthly profits to pay bills and live comfortably I will finally quit.

i can't wait. I have ruined 4 years of my life with this career. I am balding, gained so much weight, lost friends etc...

Yeah. It's not easy. I have very mixed feelings after 24 years. However, it has provided a very good living and occasional really awesome moments where I really felt I made a difference for the good.

It takes a smart, introspective person to acknowledge that he hates his current career and initiate timely changes. Good luck with your future business aspirations.

It makes me sad to hear this, but it sounds like you gave it a shot. I hope never to feel the regret you have for choosing nursing but I understand your reasoning and applaude your decision to do what is best FOR YOU. At least you have the foresight to find a different career instead of just spending the next 20 years hating your life. Good luck. I hope you find your niche.

Love the work you do, and never work a day in your life.

I hope you find that satisfaction in your business. Best of luck to you!

Thank you everyone. I will keep this thread updated with my progress. I work tomorrow I already feel anxious, nervous and sick.

I haven't met many nurses that after all the work said they hated that profession. On the other hand I don't know a nurse who didn't always like their job and this contribute to the high turnover within the nursing profession. Have tried different nursing jobs away from the type you are doing now? Psych or case management, or public nursing, something significantly different from what you are doing. Your training will always help you in your new job, the critical thinking skills, the ability to assess a new problem or just being able to help your family with knowledge.

Good luck to you wherever you chose to go the future is full of possibilities.

I wouldn't give up so easily, just saying, 4 years is not a long time. Your experience sounds pretty...well, typical LOL, sad to say. But I think once you find that job where it's a good mix of people you enjoy working with, whom you can actually refer to as friends, good leadership and where people actually care, it might not be as bad. Nursing is hard work, I think a lot of people go into it not realizing just how physically and emotionally demanding it is. But I think once you get a hold of it, and realize that's the nature of the beast, with a good support system you can succeed. I went into nursing because I didn't want to do business anymore - it's definitely not greener on the other side. if you think there's a lot of politics in the nursing field, the business world is probably 100x worse.

you need to change your work conditions. My first year of nursing was exactly as you described. Short staffed, no help, 8 patients for each nurse on a telemetry unit and CNAs that have over 20 patients each. It wasn't safe but I learned. I became a travel nurse and "picked" the hospitals that I worked at. I never had more than 4 patients (aside from a handful of times I had 5) and my CNAs never had more than 10. It completely changed nursing for me. Changing careers isn't an option because nursing itself was a career change for me and the schooling was so tasking that it would all be for nothing if I changed. My patients love me, my coworkers love me, so I am not taking myself out of a place that I can make an impact. You need to do some research on the infinite areas of nursing that you can get into that aren't like what you describe your working conditions to be.

Balding, and losing friends isn't due to having a nursing career. Gaining weight could in part be attributed to a high stress job but you have the power and resources to change that if you're unhappy. Weight gain is more effected by your eating patterns and exercise regimen than it is your career.

@ ROD nurse, MSN, BSN How did you know which hospital would give you appropriate patient ratios before hand while travel nursing?

If it makes you feel better, balding is kind of a trend among male nurses, not all but most.
