That's ridiculous, but as a previous poster stated, it's almost universal. Even when I'm sick I'm made to feel guilty. Gosh...what if an employee God forbid got hit by a bus? They have to expect someone, sometime may not be able to make it to work!

I know when I call in or any of us call in it's a hardship. We're next staffed with extra help, unless the census drops. But when you are sick and your family is sick you have to leave the guilt behind and take care of yourself and family.

my child is better now thanks but hey my other son came down with the bug! My family does come first and if i did go in to work (which i wouldnt) i would feel awful looking after other peoples sick children (im a paeds nurse) when my son was at home with his nan sick too and needed me more.

I told work i wasnt coming in and i no longer felt guilty. you all are so right why should i? At the end of the day i can get another job but i cant replace my children! My other son is feeling better today.

My son is sick so i rang in work to say not coming in and was i shocked at response i got. Well was told we are very short staffed we need you here.Sorry but my son is ill. Cant you swap with someone. Sorry but i havent time to ring round MY SON IS ILL. He is 6 yrs old! I know i will get a lecture when i return to work but my children come first. They think us nurses have no life out side hospital, but hey we all do!

don't you know that the staffing budget is more important than your son having you there for him while he's sick!!! :uhoh3:

just let it roll off....your a good mama and your doing your most important job...being there for your son when he really needs you. :)

I think this is where the Family Leave Act would come in. I had never heard that employee dependants are not part of the equation. It is my paid time off and if I need to use it emergently to stay home with my kid/spouse/so then it is my judgement to make. There is no one job that is that most important than being there for my family.

Where I work you can tell them you are taking off for sick family member but you have to use your vacation time to get paid for it. If you want to use sick pay YOU have to be sick, that is why many people say they are the ones sick. I believe family leave act covers long illnesses not short ones but either way you do not get paid.

having said that I called in sick today cos my back has gone.. you all know all about bad backs! so off to the osteopath to have it sorted in a couple of hours. sigh. hurts so much!!
