I used to ask a million questions on this forum, but it's been at least 2 years since I last logged in. I'm just chiming in to tell you all that travel nursing for me was extremely worth it. I paid off all of my debt, including my mortgage, all within 2 years. I'm still a travel nurse, and for the past year, ive just been saving, saving, saving and investing in bitcoins - if you're looking for something that is going to explode in the next couple of years, buy some bitcoins via coinbase.com I started buying them in 2011 for a few bucks each. Today, each one is at 1700 and it's going to keep rising. I couldn't have continued to buy them over the years had it not been for TN.
I'm going to keep extending at my current assignment for as long as possible, but once it's done, I'm going perm for a couple of years to learn a new specialty in cardiothoracic surgery. If anyone is looking to make big bucks without any extra frills, call Kyle at Vital Healhcare Staffing. Amazing recruiter and a very small company I believe ran by only himself. Housing can be provided but by a 3rd party and health Insurace isn't great. But the pay is phenomenal.
So bitcoins and my company Have been my lifeline and I just wanted to share those things to all.
Good luck to everyone! And hello Ned!

Hello yourself! Very happy that travel worked so well for you. Hopefully I encouraged or otherwise gave you some good advice on your path.
On bitcoin: every single possible investment has risks and downsides. Even Treasuries (money under the mattress basically) might maintain their value (excluding a period of excessive inflation), but at the risk of losing out on better investments. Bitcoin and similar currencies are great in theory, but it is disturbing that there have been some high profile hacks and corruption at their exchanges where many lost their investment.
Great luck that bitcoin has worked for you, but I don't think it is wise to suggest to others without caveats that any single investment be a major part of your investments. Pretty sure you are not saying that, or living that considering you own a paid off house, just suggesting prudence and diversifying investments and thus lowering risk. Cryptocurrencies certainly could be part of diversifying your investment portfolio - I looked at it myself recently and decided it was too much trouble for too little upside. Of course, if I was really that smart, I'd be as wealthy as Buffett!
Yes, bitcoins have been very controversial. I bought my first 20 for around 5 bucks each. I've made a lot off of those. I played around around in the Bitcoin stock market and that wasn't so pretty. But letting them just sit in my coinbase wallet has been great for me. But yes, it's not for everyone. If anyone takes heed to my advice here, I'm sure they will do their own research before jumping in. At 1700 per coin, I'm not even sure if I would buy any. But I have read some forecasts by experts who seem to think that by December, BTC will be bear 4K. If it truly reaches that, I'm cashing most of them out.
Funny you should mention Buffet. His son, Henry, lives in my hometown and works as a farmer. When Warren visits, sometimes he is seen eating lunch with his son at his favorite "deli" in town. Someone will always ask him for advice and normally his response is on our local news or local paper. Just a few weeks ago when he was in town, apparently he was asked where is the best area to buy real estate for investment purposes. He said the future in real estate looks bleak, but the future is in campgrounds. He went on to say with baby boomers retiring, they are doing more traveling, some are even selling their homes to live in RVs. And now that trend is picking up amongst the young folks who can't afford a mortgage but don't want to rent. And WE all know it's becoming popular amongst TNs. I'm certainly not going to invest in any campground/RV park, but I thought it was interesting.
There are lots of interesting investments. Trailer parks have great returns. I'm considering small. My local bridge club is being priced out of their current location. Looking at buying a church and leasing it to them long term. Failed churches are cheap and perfect for such use. Looks like a solid 10% net income on capital and secure. Not as sexy as even the historical gains of the stock market, but enough income for retirement by itself. That's just a quick pencil, a lot of due diligence to be done.

Thats funny, I have been seriously considering buying a small parcel and making it an rv park. Most on the west coast are full with waitlists for most of the year.
Housing costs are huge, families buy rvs for cheap then pay $1000 a month for a spot or more in the bay area. There are people putting rv spots at their homes to rent out....

Thank you for sharing your info. Do you mind sharing tips on how you have made and saved money in travel nursing? I've been doing travel nursing for almost two years now and have not made or saved that much money. My specialty is telemetry. TIA.

Hey Argo
This is exactly what I'm considering right now. I want to but some land and build house but I want to put in 3-4 RV spots to rent out and supplement my income. The main issue I see are zoning and deed restrictions. Do you think it would be as easy as getting a contractor to put in the spots and pull permits...providing the zoning works out? If its rural im curious if I can just get away with it. Looking at land right outside of Louisville or Lexington KY.

A better investment that would accomplish what you're going for is to buy a 2,3, 4plex or larger. Live in one unit (this will qualify you for loans with much smaller down payment if it's 4 units or less) and rent the others out. You now have a place to live for free or very cheap. When you improve the units, this increases rent and if it is a 5plex or larger, you increase the property value. From an investment standpoint, if you ever want to sell that property, you limit how many people will be interested because it has RV lots on it. Renting on your lots may have seasonal highs and lows whereas apartments if located properly will always have tenants wanting to rent. Additionally, the cost of a custom built home on your lot is expensive not to mention the challenges getting a loan for buying land to improve upon.

Got to love those "I told you so" types. Bitcoin has experience some 6 or so crashes of 40+%. Yet, do you realize Bitcoin is still up over 1000% in the last year? I can live with that kind of "pop".
Even if the OP missed the recent top, those 20 coins are worth roughly $220,000.
Now, who's ready for the stock market crash of 2018?
