Johns Hopkins Accelerated Summer Entry for BSN/MSN 2014

Published

Hi everyone! As the early and regular decision deadlines for the Hopkins accelerated programs approach, I thought I would start a new thread for this year. It seems like it's been a pretty useful source of support for prior applicants during this grueling process :)

I just got an email for the Accepted Students Day, but still haven't gotten a phone call about being accepted... Think it's a mistake or just a chance out of order procedure?? I just had my phone interview last week on Tuesday..

I know a few of you asked about the Fuld Fellowship....sorry, I have been meaning to get back to here and post. Life as a new grad RN on orientation is busy!! Anyways Fuld is an amazing experience!!! I am so honored to have been included in the amazing group of people and the work we accomplished. Yes it can be busy work at times but it is all worth it in the end. Basically the mission of the program is to focus on improving patient quality and safety through learning about different topics/methodologies associated with it. So as a fellow you have 4 additional courses you take. These courses are seminar style so you meet about 3-4 times a semester as a large group (all 20 Fellows in your cohort plus the faculty). In your second and third semester you are assigned to a quality and safety project at Johns Hopkins Medical Institute; either acute inpatient or some outpatient options. Because this is a public forum and some of my work is still ongoing I am not going to post about my project here. If you want to read about my project I encourage you to explore the Fuld page on the main SON website or you can PM with your email and I would be happy to discuss in detail

Semester 1: Focused on learning different quality and safety methods, guest speakers, choose a project

Semester 2: Seminar course continues, topics vary, work 50 hours on your project

Semester 3: seminar continues, topics vary, work 50 hours on your project, compile a scholarly paper

Semester 4: Seminar continues, online with various assignments. Compose a poster for presentation

End of semester 4 will include a day for poster presentation where you will present your work to faculty, other mentors and selected guests

That is the gist of what you do in Fuld, kind of simple overview. The clinical hours they refer to on the website are those that are involved in your project. Also there are some various activities you have to complete while at your regular clinical. For example when in my Adult Health 1 clinical I had to meet with the unit champion (ie nurse manager/ safety nurse) and interview her about her QI project

They are constantly evolving the program based on student feedback so my experience will vary from yours. I can tell you form experience that the Fuld fellowship is what helped me to land my dream job here in Rochester. Feel free to PM me with additional questions.

Thanks for all of the clinical information! It was very helpful? I would be interesting in gathering more information for people only admitted to BSN but not the MSN and what their chances are of being admitted to MSN program at Hopkins.

There were many people in my cohort who were admitted just BSN and then applied to the MSN program and were accepted. Usually Adult-Geri Acute Care NP is difficult d/t the 1 yr work experience requirement. Also the FNP program is tough just d/t space issues. However this all depends on the application cycle. The admissions officers are great at working with current students who want to apply to an MSN program plus the benefit is you don't have to fill out as much paperwork since they can pull a lot form your orginial app.

cnp2012:

How did you get your job in the admissions department? And how were you able to balance working with the busy schedule that bsn students have?

It was a work-study position. They will go over at orientation if you are awarded work-study as part of your financial in how to obtain a position. As a student you are only allowed to work part time at 20 hours per week, as far as balancing it you just have to know yourself. I would work in between classes on my lunch hour plus my boss was super flexible. I just knew I was a student FIRST and my job came second. I waited until the second month of my program to start working so I would have my feet under me, I would also adjust my schedule based on what my week is like. It is completely manageable you just need to be committed to making it work

Does anyone know when/how (email vs. snail mail) we should expect to get our financial aid packages?

Also, cnp2012, is there an established procedure for submatriculating into an MSN program during the BSN portion? If so, how many students choose to do that, and are they generally successful?

Students can apply to an MSN program during their BSN portion. You just follow the regular deadlines listed on the nursing homepage. As a current student the nice part is you do not have to submit as much paperwork because they already have all that on file. I believe you just have to write an additional essay and take the GRE's if applicable. The admissions counselors are more than happy to assist you. Not many people chose this option because they 1) weren't interested in pursuing a masters right after graduating 2) Were already BS-MSN. Off the top of my head I personally know two people who chose this route with the Peds NP program. Usually candidates that apply while in the program are successful however this varies based on specialty and the applicant pool. Hope that helps!

Hi everyone! I have been accepted to the Fall 2014 ABSN and am wondering if anyone knows what kind of global opportunities are available for nursing students in the accelerated program. I am interested in global and public health and am curious if there are opportunities for accelerated nursing students. Thanks!

There are a TON of global opportunities!! First off as a Fall Accel student there is the seek program. During this time service learning trips are held, my cohort had a group that went to Peru and Ghana and this current cohort had a group that went to Haiti. Also there is the international volunteer group and they have a trip to Guatemala every year during spring break. Also there are clinical rotations you can do abroad. You have the opportunity to go abroad for 7-10 days during public health to either Haiti or St. Croix. Also you can do your final practicum abroad which lasts between 5-7 weeks. Some options for this include UAE, Australia, Chile, Brazil, Uganda, and Singapore and they are always adding more countries. Hope that helps!

Awesome, that's great to hear! Thank you for taking the time to type that all out!

Hello Cnp2012-- I got a phone call last week, but still waiting for my acceptance package. How many days will it take for my package to be delivered?

Thanks!!

Thanks for the information! Is there any financial aid avaliable for those aboard programs?

Also, about the accepted student day. Does it count as orientation? Or there is another orientation day?

Depends when they mailed it out...I cannot vouch for the United States Postal Service haha. There are some grants available however most students fund their own trips either via loans, donations, fundraisers etc. Accepted Students Day is a day long program the school offers for you to come to the school, hear from faculty, meet your future classmates, purchase your uniforms etc. It is not orientation. Orientation is held over the span of 2 days, in either late May or late August depending on which program you are in.

I'm also in for Fall :) Congrats everyone!
