jobs for nursing students

Nursing Students General Students

I would like to start this thread as summer is near and people are starting to look for jobs. For nursing students or soon to be nursing students ,what jobs are you currently working while in nursing school ? I know it can be pretty hard to find flexible jobs that will work around your schedule and pay DECENTLY. Please feel free to leave comments below.

My pay range for both jobs is aroun 12-13 and my part time job is $14. Still it is not that bad

That not bad pay, the pct pay here is not only a $ 1- 3 an hour more working in the hospital.

Specializes in MICU.

My externship job is around $18. That's my highest pay rate so far

In our state one semester of nursing school allows you to become a CNA. I worked a lot of odd job's in the hospital you can find a lot with little to no experience. You can be a secretary...anesthesia technician or sterile processing technician, but some have to take certification classes while working.

Can be a Psychiatric Tech or Mental Health Worker. Most require bachelor's degrees/associate degrees...Some just a high school diploma. The job varies from hospital to hospital. Some don't do notes on patient's some you do. You facilitate group's. Most places have to take vitals. Some places you take blood, do EKGs, tolieting, feeding, ADLS of patient's. You do 15 minutes rounding. I made $18 an hour at previous job. Making $20 to $23 an hour at the moment.

I am working as a Psych Tech, but unfortunately the hospital at the Tech's don't work night's and won't hire any nurse with an associate's degree. So hoping to find another psych tech job working at night's...applied to one but to no avail :-(

Next step is before I get started with a nursing program to retake the EMT Class again and become certified again. A lot of night gigs as EMTs/ER Tech's in the hospital...bit of pay cut, but hopefully give me time during the day for class and make money/experience/network at night. Pay varies about $13-$18 an hour.

Other option is working at a group home...basically depending on level of care watch patient's, clean them up if need be, give medications, drive them around, may facilitate group's, and may write notes on them.

Also other option is becoming a CNA, PCA, Multi Skilled Tech...training can be 2 weeks to 4 month's. PCA/Multi Skilled Tech gets you a job in a hospital many people hire PCAs. Pay varies one hospital hires them at $18 an hour can go up to $28 an hour. Most hospitals pay is $14 to $15 similar to that of being an EMT. With PCA you learn a lot regarding taking blood and EKGs.

Final option could do is become a medical assistant most work day's Monday to Friday. Pay is $15-$20 an hour. Training is a year long though.

Also our hospital hires nursing students to do follow up with patient's who were discharged.

If can't find a psych tech gig by the end of the summer working night's going to get going with the EMT process. Working nights can work during the day at other job's like substitute teaching.

Best of luck!

Can I ask what state you live in? I live in Maryland which is expensive, but the pay your mentioning especially for pct pay is really high. Pct here that are multi skilled get around $15 per hour, new nurses here can earn as low $20 and high as $30 per hour for starting pay.

Connecticut...one hospital worked at payed PCTs a lot of cash, above the average that was the $18 an above. Most though don't go above $18 an hour, varies though. Some reason ER Tech at one hospital starts $18 an hour the other one starts at $12 an hour, both in the same city.

Nurse's with an ASN here most I know make $28-$30 an hour. LPNs make $20-$25 an hour. BSN about $40 an hour. The hospital I mentioned with high paying Tech's pay their nurse's at $40 an hour to start, ha.

Okay that makes a lot of sense, one of my cousins actually lives and works in that state , so she must be making some decent money as she has experience and has her masters degree. How did you get the pct job? Did you apply online or did you know someone working at the hospital?

Technically not a PCT, can do all the work of a PCT, but have to take the class CT refuses to recognize work experience over education. I just applied to the job...I have over five year's experience in healthcare. Started out two year's volunteering as an EMT. That led to after college per diem work as an OR Tech...then led into psych while trying to figure my life out. Now trying to find work to balance and be flexible while going back to school for nursing.

You just search for mental health worker/psych tech. Most hospital's will have openings, especially larger ones. We have maybe 2 openings a year just luck of the draw getting in.

Position in now everything was learned on the job regarding blood work and EKGs.

I avoid Connecticut like the plague ha. Was even thinking of moving to Maryland as it is cheaper than Connecticut, ha.

Yes, I definitely don't plan to move to Connecticut, my cousin only moved there because of her husband job, that only place he could find a job. I like Maryland, not too cheap but not too expensive, plus we have a lot of good hospitals here. A lot of people move down here just for the hospitals alone. I thought about EMT but the tuition was too expensive and was going to take to long, it takes at least a year. I don't have the time to take the training as I'm in my last year of nursing school. Plus the pay is here is between $10 - $13 per hour but if you have EMT experience, one can get a job in shock trauma in the hospital which should pay more.

Specializes in Psychiatry, Community, Nurse Manager, hospice.

I am a yoga teacher, starting nursing school in the fall. I will probably trim down my schedule when school starts, but I'd like to keep some income.

Specializes in LTC, Med-surg.

I work as a CNA in a nursing home. Hard work. Paid $13.50/hour and I'm part-time status.

ER scribe. They make approximately $9 an hour where I live (NM)

Not sure if this was mentioned already, but try looking into student nurse/extern positions at hospitals in your area. These are usually PCT positions specifically for nursing students who have their CNA and have finished 1 to 2 clinical semesters. Most are FT in the summer and then PRN when school starts in the fall.

The ones I've found are float positions, so you can rotate thru different units like Med-Surg, ER, ICU, Psych, maybe OB and Peds...plus you get to learn skills like foleys, EKGs, IVs (depends on the hospital), phlebotomy, vitals, accuchecks...

It's great experience! Just make sure to apply early (go on the hospital website and have them send updates on available positions), have a great resume/cover letter, nail the interview, and send a thank you letter afterwards...because these positions are usually pretty competitive. Best of luck to you!
