jobs for nursing students

Nursing Students General Students

I would like to start this thread as summer is near and people are starting to look for jobs. For nursing students or soon to be nursing students ,what jobs are you currently working while in nursing school ? I know it can be pretty hard to find flexible jobs that will work around your schedule and pay DECENTLY. Please feel free to leave comments below.

Not sure if this was mentioned already, but try looking into student nurse/extern positions at hospitals in your area. These are usually PCT positions specifically for nursing students who have their CNA and have finished 1 to 2 clinical semesters. Most are FT in the summer and then PRN when school starts in the fall.

The ones I've found are float positions, so you can rotate thru different units like Med-Surg, ER, ICU, Psych, maybe OB and Peds...plus you get to learn skills like foleys, EKGs, IVs (depends on the hospital), phlebotomy, vitals, accuchecks...

It's great experience! Just make sure to apply early (go on the hospital website and have them send updates on available positions), have a great resume/cover letter, nail the interview, and send a thank you letter afterwards...because these positions are usually pretty competitive. Best of luck to you!

I definitely recommended that although they maybe hard to get. I just got an interview for a non student pct position, after the holiday I'm going to call about my application for the student nurse position as that will work better with my school schedule but I will take whatever I can get.

Well guys I got an offer for the job I interviewed for, I'm thinking about making a thread about how to get a pct/student nurse job especially for those with no prior healthcare experience.

Specializes in Med/Surg, Oncology.

I'm not sure if this is what you're looking for, but I'm starting work as a medical scribe in the ED and also will be attending my ADN program. This is not really the conventional route, but there are plenty nursing students who go for this kind of job during school, and many have had favorable results in getting jobs relatively quickly! It doesn't really pay great, I only get $10 an hour at the local hospital and $9 at the other hospital I work at, but the experience and networking is extremely valuable!

Well, it still a great opportunity especially if they hire you in a timely manner , the tech/student nurse positions pays a little bit more but not significantly.

I don't know how many are interested in this - for me it is like it fits like a glove. I wanted to throw out the perks of dog walking and pet sitting for nursing students! I make $500-800 a week when clients go away on vacation. It's flexible, and I get to be outdoors and get exercise, besides bring along my own dogs too when it's acceptable. I don't sleep over clients houses but I have been asked to and you can make more that way. If you live near any 55+ communities you can ask if you may post your flier up in their community house and it's like a little gold mine. But I love dogs and hiking so it works good for me.

I work about 18 hours/week as an Office Manager for a small primary care office.
