I applied to NY Presbyterian and literally the next day I got a rejection email saying "Due to NewYork-Presbyterian's high volume of new graduate applications, the preferred candidate will have: Externship or Clinical Rotation experience at NewYork Presbyterian Hospital, Bachelor's Degree, minimum GPA of 3.0, and clinical experience independent of nursing school clinical rotations."

Don't let that stop you. I think sometimes they are automated emails sent out. They do walk-in interviews at their Employment Services office:

I spoke to the NR there and was told d/t the high number of applicants, they are only considering BSN applicants with a minimum of 3.2 gpa, and experience outside of clinicals. Hope this helps.

Sheesh! I hope a bachelors in another major counts. I have the clinical externship and hopefully will have the 3.2 by the end of the semester.

Wow, I had no idea. They must have just changed this recently.

It really is a shame that hospitals are being so selective based on the nursing degree. I am an original ADNer, and now teach in an ADN program. I have also taught in a BSN program, and on the whole, there is no significant difference on the quality of nurses. There are good and bad in both programs. I am definitely an advocate of furthering one's education (I have my MS), but to be selective based on that! I do realize that the hospitals do have to find a way to be selective, but just go on GPA alone then, regardless of the type of program.

I recently hears that more and more of them are asking for BSN preferred or required. This surprised me, I must say. But, as I tell my students, there is a difference between 'preferred' and 'required'.

My brother tried to get into a job that stated "preferred." They didn't accept him because "at least 1 year of experience is required" (This was in tiny letters at the bottom of the page)

Well I'm so pleased that I am getting so many response, and I thank you all for your advice. I have something set up at Methodist this week. There are some open houses which is where I will sell myself, resume and knowledge not to mention my clinical experience. Wish me luck.

If anyone heres of any open houses please inform! Thanks

I also graduated from a ADN program and passed the boards two weeks ago. The day I got my results I sent out my resume and have been to 4 hospitals for interviews so far (2 were open interviews) and one scheduled next week.

I guess your in Brooklyn, thus the name.lol. You should apply to Maimonides & Lutheran. They hire ADN's for sure among MANY other hospitals in your area.

I have the externship experience at another hospital, 3.6 GPA, and a non-nursing BA, so there you have it. Avoid hospitals that prefer BSN's for now. Like Mt.Sinai, MSK, and NYP.

Hope that helps!

I was wondering if you looked at New York Methodist in Park Slope? Have any of the interviews you went on were sucessful? Any information on St. Lukes- Roosevelt, open house or walk in? I welcome any assistance as I am still on the grind!!

I decided to go to North Shore- LIJ. It's a good health system and the pay and benefits are decent. I was leaning toward Maimondies which is another great hospital.

I did not hear back from Methodist. It's a beautiful hospital. I was reading some threads here and spoke to some nurses, and it didn't sound to good patient/nurse ratio wise.

Don't know about St. Lukes. Go for it if they have an open interview. I find that's the quickest way to get to HR.

Good luck!

Did you get the job at North Shore? Which hospital/department will you be working in? I used to work at the Manhasset campus years ago...maybe one day again!

Congratulations:yeah:
