In this day and age of nursing shortage especially in the melting pot of New York City why on earth are none of these hospital seeking ADN- RN to help fill their nursing shortage staffing? Please offer your opinions or advice even frustration!! :idea:Desperately seeking RN position!:icon_roll
Did you get the job at North Shore? Which hospital/department will you be working in? I used to work at the Manhasset campus years ago...maybe one day again!Congratulations:yeah:
Kris
Thanks SarasotaRN and Bklyngurl! I got the job at North Shore and will be in Glen Cove in the med/surg department. Start next week!
This is a little off topic, but do NY hospitals want you to pass your NCLEX before you apply? In Maryland, it seems like all the choice jobs are taken by the May 2008 graduates and it's not even March!
No as far as I'm aware of. You can work as a graduate nurse under a permit from the hospital you will be working for. The hospital applies for the permit that is issued by New York State. Most people interview during their last weeks of school to secure a position. I hope this helps you.
thinking from an employers' viewpoint... 2 new grad candidates applying for the same job with an extensive orientation (think $$$ investment by hosp in employee).. one taking nclex before starting will know if there will be any complications to their employment. The other may go thru entire orientation, end up failing nclex, and have to immediately stop working, wait 45 days... retake nclex... ????.. just more potential complications. From an employers' standpoint, just makes more sense to hire the former considering all else equal... seem logical?

I agree with you, but I was wondering why the difference in practice in the two different states.
I think it's because there's more of a nursing shortage in Maryland.
My students have told me that the NY employers are becoming a bit more selective with this. Perhaps because of the scenario mentioned by billy. Makes perfect sense.
This has been my experience in applying. Aside from the Cornell, NYP and MSKCC's, everyone else seems to be waiting to put new grad positions out there.
I will be attending the NYS Student convention. Hopefully that will open some doors. If it doesn't work out, I guess I'll have to stay in MD.

As a new grad, I'd say in the area I was looking (NYC-Queens-Long Island), I really didn't get the sense any hospitals were starving for nurses. I was particularly interested in the ICU, and overall not many programs really seemed too interested in hiring and training new grads. When I expressed interest in M/S at the same institutions, I miraculously began receiving more responses, so the logical conclusion (albeit a small sample size) would be that there is a demand for nurses in the NY area, but the level of demand is dictated by the specialty field chosen.

There is a nursing fair in Melvie, LI on March 13 go to nursing spectrum website for details. Have you consisder Brooklyn? Do you have a particular area of ICU maybe consider the step down unit to the ICU to get your foot in the door and then transfer to ICU.
Thx Bklyngurl... I was very fortunate get the job at the top of my list... NSLIJ's Crit Care Fellowship... but it was a little frustrating to get alot of no callbacks from many other hospitals during the search process.
I was just responding to Zahryia's comment on the 'nursing shortage' in NY vs MD....
