Job Search Blues and Questions

Published

I have been looking for 7 months for an NP job (certified as Adult) in the Boston area and I am getting frustrated, feeling down on myself, and at times demotivated.

I haven't seriously considered relocating but realize that I need to do that. I don't have a lot of funds to travel and apply for other state licenses especially if its horrible market in other states. I guess my questions are 1)Am I alone in this plight. 2) Where are the jobs?? 3) Has anyone been able to relocate without spending a fortune? Thanks for any advice!!

You might consider locums. I'm PMHNP and travel with housing provided, car allowance, DEA paid for, etc.. I don't have a home here in the states as I was living in Asia last 6 yrs so I just roam around with all my belongings in my beautiful pickup truck between jobs. Just sent my wife off this morning back to her job in Bangkok. Works for us and gives me opportunity to see the country and where we might want to settle down someday. Wait...settle down...arrgghhh....

I am just beginning the job search and I'm nervous about it. Everyone keeps telling me I'll have to problem finding a job...but I want a GOOD job!

I had an offer recently but I'm pretty sure I'm not going to take it. I hate to turn it down only because I keep hearing how hard others are having it.

It took me months to find after I graduated and that was 7 years ago when the economy was not bad. If you can relocate, like I could, I searched online daily and applied online for everything I was qualified for all over the US. Most places will pay for you to come interview if they are far (they flew me from GA to DE and paid for my hotel during the interview). As far as moving, my job reimbursed me for my movers but that was years ago. I am not sure with the economy if that is routinely offered now but it is worth it to ask. If finances are tight, you could put most of your belongings in storage and bring with you the bare necessities and have movers once you get a few paychecks. Hang in there! Different areas of the country have different markets for APN's. Good Luck!

Everyone always forgets about occupational health, and I have no idea WHY! Search under occupational health nurse practitioner. I have seen a couple of openings in the Boston area recently. Or, to get experience and benefits check out a occ. health chain that has multiple facilities, like Concentra.

Thanks everyone. Still looking. Hadn't thought about occ. health. will research.

Also look at websites like Cleveland Clinic, Mayo, Hopkins, Kaiser, other large national corporations. Hopkins has programs and jobs all over the country, not just Baltimore, for instance. I have noticed that their internal career sites have tons of jobs that never show up in search engines.

Are these jobs a decent possibility for ANP/FNP grads without occ. health experience? From the few postings I've seen they seem to require experience in that field as an RN or NP, and specialty training and familiarity with OSHA regs etc. They look like interesting positions, but they also seem to ask for the moon in their potential hires.

Granted, lots of job postings ask for the moon and yet they do end up taking someone who can't check off everything on their list....and they train them and they do OK.

Am new at this site, and I know this is an age old topic - new grad, no job- but seriously , where are the jobs for new graduates ? I did apply for postings

on occupational health, ER, urgent care ... and have been taking all the advices

here. Am I the only one left ? :hdvwl: Graduated May, passed AANP July, licensed August. Anyone with me ?

I read the average job search is 10 months. Hang in there.

BTW, my job gave me a 15k sign on bonus since there were no travel or relocation expenses. So, I do think some/many are still paying for those things.

Specializes in allergy and asthma, urgent care.

Have you looked into community health centers? They often hire new grad NPs and there are many in the Boston area. Check out (google) the National Health Service Corp website if you're interested/willing to work with an underserved population, be it in Boston or other parts of the country.

Best of luck with your search.

Thank you BCgrad and lineart. Am truly trying to be optimistic and I started

applying in another state and am doing endorsement of my license.

Quick question though: Do I understand right that some new grads can get locum positions ? I read somewhere about a psyche new grad getting a locum

as her first NP job. Zenman, can you share about your locum experience, and was that your first NP job ? Thank you so much for all your help. I pray for

all the new grads who are in the same boat as I am.
