Jealous much?

I am so frustrated with some of my classmates...If anyone knows the best way to handle this, please help.

I am taking pre-reqs this semester, and I am doing really well. Like I am so busy kicking a** that I don't even have time to take names. ;)

That said, I do not run around school acting like Little Miss Know-it all, and I really just keep to myself for the most part with the exception of a few other motivated, excited, dedicated students, with whom I study, etc. We are running into the problem of the students who are not doing as well being nasty and vicious to us because we are "good students".

I was yelled at the other day, by a girl half my age, whose essay I was assigned to proofread (the prof assigned trades). It was really bad, like I am not sure how she graduated high school. It looked as though a second grader had texted it to me. I said nothing to her about how awful it was, I mostly just felt sorry for her. I proofed it, and when she saw how many marks I made on it, she began hollering about how I "disrespected" her. WHAT??? I said nothing personally combattive to her, not even a sideways glance, I just corrected the hundreds of spelling, capitalization, grammatical, and punctualization errors she had made.

In Biology, the faction of kids who generally sleep in class (if they show up at all) have started harassing my lab table if we do not let them see our lecture notes, lab books, etc. We have gone to the prof about it, and she talked to them I guess, because now they just glare at us and kick our backpacks and mutter hateful things when they walk by.

I never expected college to be so much like grammar school! I was detested in elementary because I was labeled a "gifted child" and got pulled out of class all the time for gifted child programs, to sit in classes 2 grades ahead of me, etc. I grew up thinking "genius" was a dirty word. Now, as an adult, I hoped I wouldn't have to deal with this crap. These are young adults acting like the 3rd graders I thought I had left far behind.

I'm just frustrated, because I'm working my butt off, and for my efforts I'm getting chastized. I want to enjoy school, and I do enjoy the content, but that is being overshadowed by the nasty social climate.

The ironic thing is, the only class in which I am struggling a bit to maintain an A average is Economics, the one I take online! So nobody sees that I am not really a straight 100 student! ARGHHH...

Haha I wouldn't worry too much about that. I'm sure it is frustrating, but I wouldn't waste your time worrying about what someone (that is half your age and can't write) thinks of you. Just keep on doing what you have been doing and make A's. It's just one semester.

Oh boy, I certainly wouldn't want to have to deal with that. First of all, the girl who's essay you graded should be THANKFUL that you did all of that for her because I would assume that she got to make the corrections, right? And I would think that would help her out in the long-run as far as her grade goes. But unfortunately some will look at it as you being mean or attacking them. But for her to yell at you infront of everyone, that is uncalled for.

Secondly, next time someone kicks your backpack, just ask them "do you mind?"

Don't ever think it is a bad thing to be able to grasp what you are being taught. If others are not applying themselves as they should and aren't getting it simply because they are not "good" students (meaning sleeping during class or not showing up), then why is it your responsibility to do the work for them?

I am one who does not grasp on to things easily, but I have passed all of my classes...never did good in High School. They are obviously hoping to get a free ride from someone and if it were me, I'd refuse.

Me, I would eventually say something if it kept up...that's just how I am though. I learned to speak up and this happened because of two things...I am 31 now and I had my daughter...for some reason that changed me and allowed me to defend myself and speak up which I was never able to do before!!!

The best you can do at this point is ignore it as long as you can! It sounds like you have a lot of VERY immature people in your classes and hopefully that is not something normal for that school. I don't do well with immature people!!!

Good luck and I hope it gets better for you. Don't let them intimidate you!!

woah..You are talking about college right?

I read plenty of horrible essays in English as well. I figured it wasn't my job to make anything but vague suggestions that were not even close to criticism for that very reason.. Plus at the end of the day it didn't matter to me (for lack of a better phrase) what sort of grade they got in the class.

I can't believe your lab classmates. Don't they know that copying is not going to help them anyway.

Hope it gets better for ya :)

Thanks you all, I know it's not the worst problem in the world, but it sure is sucking all the joy out of this new adventure for me. I'm getting sick of having to defend myself for being "smart". I also feel sorry for these folks who think they can just skate by without learning anything or doing any work. They will just find out later that's not how life works usually, and it will be a bitter lesson at that point.

lmm1019...That's what I thought too! I honestly expected her to be at least a little grateful, my proofing probably saved her from failing (the paper was an exam grade). I was so shocked when she started spewing all that venom at me. Know what really gets me? I actually apologized to her! Shows how smart I am, huh? :lol2:

S.A.- your PM box is full, could you clear out some space so I can reply? Thanks!

I know EXACTLY how you feel. I have not always been as hard-working and goal-oriented as I am now in college. Its funny how when you work hard people take notice and believe that you should be willing to basically share the wealth! MY advice dont let folks cheat, you can offer to help people and be a study buddy, but its not fair to you or the people to let them cheat. Since in the long run it comes back to haunt them and it lowers your dignity

i cant stand seeing lazy people in my classes either!! just today we got tests back in our human growth and development class and this girl was whining because she got a d!! um hellllooo it was open book!! just keep to your friends and ignore the others that are just jealous!

Lol! You brought back memories from my first few years of elementary school when I thought "precocious" was a terrible name to be called because of similar issues...

Wow. Well, I don't know what you can do about the childish behavior of your classmates. You can't make them act differently. My only suggestion would be to try and find something nice to say to them (if not about their work, then about their hair or personal style) to help them feel welcome and ignore them when they're acting out. Perhaps they're feeling overwhelmed by the material and haven't figured out that it's not luck or genius that's gotten you where you are but effective study techniques. I was amazed by a student that text-messaged constantly during all of the Nutrition lectures that they attended. I was not surprised at the F's they showed me on their papers, but they were steadfastly perplexed at the difference in our grades. The main difference was that I took notes and listened during lecture. I see now how lucky I was that this student was nice and polite though. I'm sorry that you're having to deal with rudeness and immaturity in your class. :o Perhaps they'll soon stop attending or drop the class as the final drop deadline approaches?

I've noticed that sometimes the evening classes are populated with more serious students... but that's not helpful this semester.

Kristine, I agree. I have not taken day classes, but my night classes, I've never had any issues with my classmates. There have been a few who were a little childish about certain things, but I've never had issues with people being nasty to me for no reason or trying to get answers from me...we all did what was expected. And I've taken all my pre-req's already. I love night classes!

Hey at least you weren't given a bad grade due to their incompetence. When I attented UofA for awhile the second half of my majors Biology class was graded lecture and lab together. I did great in the lecture portion of the class but ended up assigned to the lazy half of the class for the labs. Basically, one guy had already taken the class and failed so he had the rest of my lab partners all copying off of his old work (hello? he failed!). Thusly, while the other half of the class was performing the experiments and collecting data, my half was sitting on their butts at the benches just chatting and joking around. No one would even team up with me so I could get some actual data for writing the labs. After the first lab I actually asked the teacher if I could switch groups or borrow some of their data for the lab write ups and explained why. He just replied that he knew what was going on but this was "real life" and that I needed to figure out how to work with my group. I basically ended up doing everything alone (and multiple times at that so I could simulate a group answer on my own). Because I refused to copy the work of someone else I got an "A" on my lecture and a "D" in lab for "non-participation" which amounted to a big ol' "C"!!!!:angryfire
