What is your Nursing Kryptonite?
Omg I thought I was the only one who got grossed out by hair!!!! Other things that do me in are earwax and nasty feet.

Getting used to gore?
Love my ortho cases! Eyeballs gross me out but luckily we don't do them often. Can you double up with someone to get experience in those cases? It seems scary to a lot of people but once you are in there you'll be fine!

Western Governors University (WGU) Readiness Assessment
Congrats guys on getting in!! I'm currently enrolled in their RN to BSN. I took BioChem first and it was a ton of work, not necessarily hard but a lot of work, I have no idea how someone finished it in less than a week. I think one of the best parts of WGU is that it's at your own pace and my mentor is great as I;m sure they all are. Feel free to ask me any questions!

Is anyone else being pushed for 30 minute turnover times in between cases?
We have a 30 minute turnover where I work too. Some days it works and other days it doesn't. I always feel rushed, bring back our unused supplies, grab stuff for the next case, go see the patient, and open the room. With these ortho cases that's a lot to get done in a short amount of time. Heaven forbid I have to pee. If we miss our 30 minute mark we get a call from charge asking why, well it's either bc it took so damn long to clean or the anesthesia resident and/or attending is chatting away, or we are missing something (happens more than it should). We have all voiced our concerns but I doubt it will ever change. I work at a huge level one teaching facility.

Best and Least Cases?
LOVE ortho, great docs, busy cases! I could live without plastics and general and since we are cluster based I'm never in a position to do hearts or vascular.
-
How many hours per week (avg) do you work these days?
At least 40 hours. Have been doing 8's but switch to 10's next week. They are cutting back on staff and OT but you can't stop traumas so I'm sure my hours will only increase.

Where have you found missing countable items?
Found a lap under the OR bed, must have fallen and then gotten kicked under it so all that was peaking out was the very edge. Missing raytec in the red kick bucket...after multiple people searching through everything another tech comes in, looks down and goes "is this it", the other nurse and I wanted to die LOL

circulator OR, new grad, too fast paced?
I started in the OR in November as practically a new grad (2 months in a rehab facility doesn't count). We recently graduated from our orientation program and I have been on my own for a few weeks now. Every day I feel more and more comfortable. I don't know it all and I still get nervous about certain cases/surgeons but I think I'm better at hiding it and I know that there are always resources a phone call away if I need something. If you love the OR stick with it!! In a few months you'll look back and see how far you have come!

Peri OP 101 final exam
Dont be discouraged I just took it a few weeks ago and failed the 1st time, the 2nd time I got a 93. About half of the nurses in my group failed and we all passed the 2nd time. Review the questions you got wrong and you will be just fine!
-
Is working in the or really that stressful?
YES!!!! Ok I've only been in the OR for about 6 months but after this week I can say yes! What a bunch of rude MD's this week!!!!

Hartford Hospital vs St. Francis Hospital
Any OR nurses at either hospital?? I'd love to ask you some questions! I'm at another CT hospital and will be looking to be at a hospital closer to home in a few years.

Attention all EPIC users
Great....we are going live sometime in the next year....just when I'll be comfortable with our current program. lol
-
Statements taken completely out of context...and are FUNNY!
I had a few good ones last week.... cysto room my tech says to me "you're gonna get wet today" ortho case "is it (cement) hard enough yet?" a few min later "just ram it in there" LMAO I love my job!!
-
MGH is offering new grad ICU internship for $11.44 an hour?
Great opportunity? Yes! But that pay is just insulting!! I'm in an internship program at another hospital in New England and I get paid what any other new nurse would get paid. I don't think I could take a job as an RN making less than I made as a tech....that's just insane!!
