I beefed up my summer course load and plan to take MAT 118, COM 102, and IVY 104, all online. Anyone else taking these?

Kgle--

If you haven't taken dosage calculations, do. It's only a one credit class, but you can take it online. I heard it helps in nursing school You have to be able to pass a dosage calculation test before you can pass meds in clincials.

Well I definitely want to take it, but unfortunately I have to have 12 credits to get my SSACI award next semester and I don't want to take 5 courses :( I may take that in Fall of 09 since after this spring I won't be full time again until the ASN program. I HAD been planning on taking dosage calc next semester but it sucks since its only 1 semester. I am taking med term now and I HATE it...our online course sucks and the homework is even worse due to the way its set up (plus our teacher is no help either).

hey. can you post the course number for the dosage calculations course? i can not seem to locate that. i am considering taking math 118 to learn conversions but this seems easier!!! i would rather not take an extra math course, if i do not need to. thanks in advance!:D

it's hhs 103. they have an online and a face to face class. i took it online. the only problem i had was that sometimes the teacher ddidn't respond to questions very fast.

i highly suggest 118! i am in it right now (an 8 week) and i absolutely love it. it really helps apply other concepts that you will definitely use in the long run (simple/compound interest, interest rates and how much you pay in interest etc). i do know that you can find it under health sciences when you are pulling up courses and times.

Guys, really and truly, if you dont need the extra class for fiancial aid purposes you really don't need to take a Dosage Calc class. At Indy, our Dosage Calc is rolled in with our usual classes and the test was so easy. I only missed one question and that's because I read it wrong.

If you can remember a couple simple formulas, you're golden.

D/H x V=dose That is Desired (ordered) divided by amount on hand times vehicle (mL, g, tab, etc) = dose

Example:

The physician orders Methergine 0.3 mg po tweice a day for postpartum bleeding. The medication i supplied in 0.2 mg tablets. How many tablets will the nurse administer?

Answer: 0.3/0.2 x 1tab = 1.5 tabs

0.3mg is the desired dose. Divide that by the on hand dose (0.2mg). Multiply by the vehicle (tabs). Since there is 0.2mg in 1 tab,you would multiply by 1.

And for IV,it is just as easy once you learn the formula.

Example: NS 1800mL IV to infuse in 15 hours by controller. Calculate the flow rate in mL/hr.

It's a lot of words but simple math.

You divide mL/hr. 1800 mL/15 hrs= 120mL per hour.

Using that, you can calculate the drops/min.

Example: Calculate the drops/min with a drop factor of 15.

The formula for this is Volume(mL)/Time(min)xDrop factor(gtts/mL)=flow rate.

First, convert your time to minutes. 15 hoursx60= 900

So.....

1800mL / 900 x 15 (drop factor) = 30gtt/min (drops per minute)

It seems like a lot at first, but it comes pretty quickly and they give you practice tests and all that. It's not as bad as you think! I think we only had a couple people that needed to retake it.You get three tries but you won't need them! You will get a Dosage Calc book with an online course that was written by our faculty at Indy. It is self study but it won't take you long to get it. I am horrible at math and picked it up with relative ease. Seriously don't sweat it!!!!

Wow, that was long. Hopefully the formatting stays put so the math part makes sense.

hey everyone!!! i wanted to drop in and ask everyone how it's going. how is your "to-do" lists coming along??? :bugeyes:our orientation for gary is not until december 8th. they said we will be doing schedules then (can't wait).....:anbd:

pnkrocdevil: where did you guys go for cpr cert and what was the cost????( thanks in advance):flwrhrts:

option 1:you can take it wherever offers the aha bls for healthcare providers course. go to the american heart assoc. site and there will be a search option that lets you search for courses in your area. just choose the bls for healthcare providers (make sure it's not a re-cert course, but one for initial cert.) and it will give you the phone numbers and addresses of the facilities in the area that teach it, so you can just call and schedule with one of them. or..

option 2: mrs. d, (one of the instructors) teaches it and it will usually be offered before classes start, or shortly after they start. she does it at her church in gary. i did mine the other way because i didn't want to wait. the cost was (for either option) either 35 or 40. you can call the nursing office and ask, or they will let you know at your orientation if she has a class coming up. good luck!

thanks so much!!!!!:bowingpur

There are calculations your instructors will teach you. OB and Peds are very different from what you learn in 1st semester. It's not expected to be self study in OB/Peds. The test for OB/Peds is very different and is associated with the clinical course. It's not one where you get 3 tries to pass..whatever grade you earn, it's worth a percentage of your grade. I know some students who did really well and others who didn't study and got 60% (since they said they learn it in 1st semester...take that attitude and you'll do horribly).

Specializes in TBD.

Hi to all of you who start in Indy this next semester. I noticed today that the schedule is posted in Campus Connect!

OK I am such a LAME-O.

I wasn't going to do full time next semester because I couldn't find any fluff classes...but now I did. Spanish I and CINS 101.

I know that CINS will be a pretty easy A and I will probably do it in 8 weeks. I am very good with computers...

Has anyone taken Spanish I? I actually don't really consider it that fluff because I think it will be a great thing to brush up on my Spanish since its been so long. Any thoughts on it? It would be online as well.

I am also taking APHY 102 and ENGL 111.

Or maybe IVY 070? I am taking 105 in the summer...but this one is 3 credits and seems like it might be a help. Any ideas?

If you have taken Spanish before I think it will be fairly easy for you. I am taking SPN 101 right now and have never taken it before, in fact I had French in High School and I am getting the two confused a bit! Some words are similar. I still don't know if I want to go on to 102, just so I know it better, but right now I am just getting to the point where I can recognize words. Putting together a sentence in spanish, that is a WHOLE different ball park!

Good luck, I think you will do just fine!:yeah:

My daughter took three years of French in high school and now she's taking Spanish in college. She says she speaks Spanish with a French accent!!!
