I beefed up my summer course load and plan to take MAT 118, COM 102, and IVY 104, all online. Anyone else taking these?
Just thought I would update you all on where I stand this semester. I am finishing my MAT118 & SOC111. If all goes well I will have an A in both classes here at IVY TECH Lafayette. I plan on taking beginning Spanish, History, and maybe a cople others. Has anyone taken Chemistry? Just trying to get some of my pre-requisites out of the way for my BSN at ISU. Anyone do the LPN to ASN at Ivy Tech Indy???
TNX

I am taking Chemistry right now and it is all just the real basic stuff. I had honors chemistry in High School and we did more there than what we are doing now. You'll do just fine, especailly if you are finishing up MAT 118 now, there are a lot of conversions in chemistry.
Good luck!
wassup sah?just ordered my uniform today- got my criminal check and my physical too. don't need anymore shots!! :yeah:i never thought to ask my dr.'s office how much a drug screen is.....probably should do that before i get there and find out it's like $200 or something!!!
immensely enjoying freedom....ahhhhhhh!!!!
hey k--
just bummed about my schedule. it looks like there's no one that i know in my classes ( so we'll definitely have to meet for study groups and stuff. maybe the fall semester will be different.
p.s. i'm so done with my classes this semester...now that i know what's just around the corner, i have stopped caring about this semester!
I am getting ready to buy my books for Jan. start. Most of them I am going to buy from a girl who dropped out.
I have a question though. It seems like looking at the book list Ivy provided (Indy), that some of the books on the list have newer editions released. I wonder if the list wasn't updated or if they are still using the older books. Can anybody who bought the bundle at the bookstore verify that the list is correct by matching the dates? Thanks a lot.
Good luck to all of you who will be starting in January!
I went to an info session at Indy today. They said that they might have summer classes available for nursing starting in the summer of 2010 I think (or maybe this summer, I'm not sure, I was a little confused LOL) but that it would not be guaranteed that people could get in them, nor mandatory. So if that goes through, it might make some people be able to either graduate earlier or at least have a lighter load of nursing classes in any given semester due to spreading them out. I don't think they would be able to just do the entire first or second semester of nursing in the summer though, because of the shortened time frame and those semsesters being full loads. They weren't really specific about how it would work but I don't think they have it figured out yet or even if they will definitely do it.
As I am trying to schedule my classes, I was wondering if I should take the pharmacology class that is offered to medical assisting students. I was thinking this might help with the Pharmacology for nursing class that all nursing students have to take. As well as worrying about pre reqs, I am worried about how difficult the classes will be once I start the program. I only need to take psy 101 this semester for my lpn pre reqs, so I need a filler class anyways. Any input?

It might not be as in depth as NS pharm, but it sounds like a good way to get your feet wet. Nothing learned is ever wasted. Even simply learning for the sake of learning has worth. I would also recommend Medical Terminology if you haven't had to take it yet. It probably won't be included in the NS curriculum and it really helped me. It was great not having to look up what something in my Med/Surg book meant before I could continue studying. Again, it's only basics, but it's a great starting point. Anything you can do to prepare for NS will give you confidence, a sense of familiarity, and decrease your stress.
A lot of nurses will tell you that MA work has nothing in common with nurses and that, if your goal is nursing, not to bother with any kind of MA work or training. Some will say the same about CNA's and Nurse Techs.
I've never agreed with that. I've was a MA and then a Nurse Tech before deciding to go to NS. Both experiences provided me with great opportunities to learn. I think I learned more as a MA than a Nurse Tech. When I was a tech, I didn't really get many chances to observe the nurses at work. I did my job and they did theirs and we didn't cross paths very often. Also, licensed personnel didn't really socialize with unlicensed. However, the Tech job really familiarized me with the objectives of the Fundamentals class of 1st semester NS.
As a MA, however, I got to directly observe the doctor and his nurses at their work. I asked tons of questions and they loved to explain what symptoms they'd seen, the disease process, and the treatment options.
I also learned a lot about medications during my time as a MA in the Doc's office. When I did my patient intake, I could see the medications that went along with different diseases and I would read the notes about what drugs couldn't be combined with the current regimen. Part of my progress notes was asking what side-effects were bothering the patient and, later, I would grab a drug book and try to figure out which one of their medicines was causing the problem.
It was an invaluable experience. When everyone else was struggling through Pharm in NS, I was the one who could rattle off the name of any drug the instructor described.
Do you have any healthcare work experience? Even voluntering as a "gopher" will give you a taste of the environment-
the pace, the atmosphere, the sights, smells, and sounds.
Hope this helps and Good Luck!
Happy Thanksgiving everybody!!!!!!!!
Thanks for the response, it was helpful. I am taking the CNA class next semester as well. My advisor said, if nothing else, it will give me experience dealing with patients. I have taken the medical terminology class. Not only was it interesting, but it touched on the basics of anatomy & physiology so it was helpful during those classes.
Are you at the Ivy Tech Lawrence campus? If so you might not be able to take the Med. Assisting pharm class because they require a signature from one of the chairs for any MA class, and they might not let a non-MA student into the class. I went to a MA info session the other week and they said that they've stopped offering online MA classes at Lawrence, and that it is being considered to drop online MA classes statewide as well. So there will probably be more of a need for MA students to have those spots in the MA classes, so that's why they might not let you into the class. Of course, it may be different for now at other campuses.

Just so you know, they won't accept an IVY 0XX class for graduation. You have to take an IVY 1XX class. It needs to be a 100 course. They also recommend the Ivy 105 class, which I believe is Critical Thinking. However, I took Ivy 101 and it was super easy (done online).
