I beefed up my summer course load and plan to take MAT 118, COM 102, and IVY 104, all online. Anyone else taking these?
I have a question. I have been taking all my pre-reqs online (Ivy Tech) and I want to take my ANP online but a girl in my COM class said not too. She said she can't even believe they offer it online because of how hard it is. Has anyone taken their ANP online and if so do you think it was too much and you should have went to campus? Thanks in advance!

I took 101 in class and 102 online. I got As in both, but in class it was FAR easier. I feel like I really learned it that semester. Online, I felt like I didn't really learn it well, I just parroted the answers back for the tests, which is not what I wanted. I wanted to really understand it, and for me, it was very difficult having to teach myself from the powerpoints since there wasn't a lecture.
yeah, i love the program. i hear people complaining all the time about things saying "oh they wouldn't do that at valpo". the instructors/program chairs are tough. they give you rules when you start and expect them to be followed. for example if you show up late for an exam, you have to make it up with 6% off your grade. if you miss a quiz you can't make it up, and that could hurt because the quiz grade average counts as one exam grade. the grading is strict. 93-100 for an a. i had a 4.0 when i started and scored scored a 92 on my teas. my final grade in fundamentals was a b. so, just be prepared for it to be rough (very strict grading on exams, even for spelling/grammar) and to have more studying to do than you could ever imagine. it's a lot of work but you somehow seem to make time for it if it's your priority. 6 out of 20 girls have to start again next semester because they didn't finish fundamentals with a 75%. the material isn't that hard (fundamentals anyway), it's just a lot. i'm very happy i chose this campus. my instructors have been great, and i've learned so much since august. i'm thankful they are hard on us, even the "are you crazy" looks we get when we ask a stupid question are making me bust my tail even harder. we'll see if i feel the same way after i start clinicals on monday
. gotta go study for my pharm and med surg exams in the morning. cheers!
thank you for all the info. now i can kinda get a picture of how it will be. if you get a chance can you post an example of how my schedule will be? do we get to pick or do they give us our schedules. how long do clinicals run into the evening? i have to have my daughter picked up by 6:30 pm so i am trying to see how this will be . you have been so helpful already:bowingpur. thank you. good luck in clinicals:yelclap:.

:igtsyt:please do not sell yourself short by taking anp online! my anp professor was upset that they offer it online :crash:. you are paying for this education and you should get the best possible. i learned so much on campus in those two semesters, more than any other class so far. go to campus. you are going to need a lot of the info you learn in anp when you start nursing:up:.
good luck. :roll
Wow, 6 out of 20? I haven't heard anyone from our class having to retake it but I'm sure there are a few.Our instructors really got on us about letting the A thing go. They said we should stop expecting A's and be happy if we get a C because we'll always have that RN or LPN after our name once it's over. I still want an A but I don't dwell on it and I have done better without the added pressure on myself.
Goodluck with clinicals. I start next week too. I'm scared![/qu
I've actually been doing better too since Med Surg started. I am being easier on myself now that I got that first B out of the way. Oh, and the 6 girls that didn't pass in my class aren't the only ones. The way our program is set up (not sure if it's state wide) is that RN and LPN are all together for semesters 1&2, so that's a lot more students than if it were just RN (they only accepted 18 RN this semester). Also, I think they're being extra strict because Gary just started the traditional RN program 2 years ago. Before they only had the transitional (LPN-RN, paramedic-RN), so they are trying to keep their NCLEX rate at 100% since it's a new program. In my Med Surg class we have 4 students that are on their second time in that class, and in Pharm we have 6 students retaking it (one of them is on his third time around). So yeah, it's kinda scary realizing that you could be one of them, going thrugh this craziness a 2nd time. Good luck with your clinicals as well, I'm sure you'll do great! What my instructor told us is "Don't worry, we're not gonna let you guys hurt anybody. We're the ones with the license to lose." HA!
Special K,I'm having the exact same issue! I have a pre-schooler that goes Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9-12 and a first grader that gets on the bus at 8:40 and off at 4:15. She does have before and after school care at her school that I can always use, but it's my pre-schooler that I am having issues with. He also has a chronic illness, so we have to be careful when colds and flu bugs are going around (like keep him home from school as a precaution). My dad said he can help out, but how much?? I'm SO excited for school...but I'm soooo nervous/anxious to get a plan set for them (and I live a good 45 min.-1 hour from the Lawrence campus). Hopefully we both get our kids' care worked out!!!!! :)

Good luck getting all of your stars in alignment for childcare, etc.:) I have faith if we couldn't do it, it wouldn't have been offered to us. (If you know what I mean!!!) I have some people I can ask for help, if I need to, but hoping to manage it without. Keep me posted!!!
I don't go to that campus but I know our instructors are strict on being late, especially on exam days or clinicals. If we are late on exam day, we do not get to take it until the end of the day and some will dock points. We can't be late to clinicals at all. They round the time up and you're docked a grade after so many times and you automatically fail. Are any other campuses like this?
That makes sense, and I definitely respect that! I think I am going to do some "dry runs" over the next few weeks after I get my kids on the bus to see if I can get there on time without killing myself, or anyone else in the process. If not, I think I have a couple of neighbors who wouldn't mind having my kids hang with them 10-15 before the bus comes....:)
There was no way I was going to be able to dig up all my shot records, so I went to the Dr. today. I got a tetorifice shot, 2 Hepatitis B shots (because they didn't have adult doses so I had to get 2 child shots) I got a TB shot and had to get my blood drawn to show antibodies to DPT, MMR and chicken pox. If I don't have immunity, I have to get those shots too.OUCH! Tetorifice arm is very sore.
Now I have to find somewhere to get my CPR certificate.
Hey Imagine....
Luckily I went through that whole spiel in June when I got hired on at St. V's. When they drew my antibodies, I didn't have resistance to chicken pox!!! Can you believe that? My mom thought I had it as a child, but couldn't remember for sure. So got 2 rounds of vaccines (already had Hep from previous healthcare job before kids), TB tests and CPR certification. Hopefully I can get copies from work....
yeah indy!!!! i can't wait to start! i'm such a tool...i had to stop into the bookstore today and buy an ivy tech nursing sweatshirt. i don't know...i guess it's some sort of validation for me and a reward for all the hard work up to this point. and it's only going to get better!!!
yeah!! eat it up, is what i say!!!

I was relieved to read your post about the "Obsessive Straight A Disease"!! I am trying to move into that mindset, but it's so hard after feeling like anything less than a A is failure...:typing
