Ivy Tech Thread

I beefed up my summer course load and plan to take MAT 118, COM 102, and IVY 104, all online. Anyone else taking these?

There was no way I was going to be able to dig up all my shot records, so I went to the Dr. today. I got a tetorifice shot, 2 Hepatitis B shots (because they didn't have adult doses so I had to get 2 child shots) I got a TB shot and had to get my blood drawn to show antibodies to DPT, MMR and chicken pox. If I don't have immunity, I have to get those shots too.

OUCH! Tetorifice arm is very sore.

Now I have to find somewhere to get my CPR certificate.

Do you have a list of all the shots and things we need? Are all the campuses the same regarding these requirements? Thanks.:nurse:

good morning nurse nessa! i'm checking in on you, as promised!!! how are you doing?:) any updates from gary?:typing i know you got accepted to valpo, but is the gary campus the one you are hoping to go to? i'm still pretty geographically ignorant outside of the indy area!!! big hugs :icon_hug: from you fellow classmates!! (even if we go to different campuses!!) hang in there!!!:heartbeat

thanks.:yeah: it is great to have so much support. i am still waiting over here. you are correct, i would prefer the gary campus. i am still keeping my fingers crossed.:up::up:

Hi Nursenessa,

You have to prove you have had all the regular shots, MMR DPT, Hepatitis, and Chickenpox or have your Dr. confirm immune antibodies through blood work. You also have to have a tetorifice shot and a TB test.

I believe it's the same at all campuses because you need to be immune to all these things in order to do your clinicals. I think it's a requirement from the hospitals.

I hope that helps!:D

Oh, and I just read you have to have proof of a yearly negative Mantoux Test. Whatever that is? I forgot that one today at the Dr.

Nursenessa,

I just wanted to give you some info about your vaccinations etc. for Gary (I just started the RN program there).

You will need:

A physical, the forms will be given at registration/orientation

Pertusis vaccination, usually given as a TDap with tetorifice and diptheria.

Hep B series, or a waiver signed if you haven't completed them yet (they take months to get all 3)

A 2 step TB (PPD) test. Make sure you have one done, go back in to have it checked, then you must get another one in 1-3 weeks after the first one. Just make sure you tell them you need the two step test.

5 panel drug screen

CPR card (it has to be the BLS for healthcare workers course from American Heart Assoc., not red cross)

They strongly suggest a chicken pox vaccine if you didn't already have them. If you did have chix. pox already it must have been physician diagnosed, and you must have a record of that.

An Indiana State Police criminal background check. We were able to just go to the state police website and do it online instead of having to mail forms. I heard they were switching to a full criminal history now, so it might be different when you start.

That's everything we needed. Don't stress too much about getting everything done before you start class. It doesn't really need to be completed until a few weeks after you start. It's all for the clinical sites, they are the ones that require all this. Good Luck on getting in. I'm sure you'll be fine if you got into Valpo. You'll have a few of my classmates with you that didn't pass fundamentals and have start all over again in the spring. Cheers!

i have been soooo frustrated not getting anything from indy (i even emailed today!). i pretty much figured i was just waiting for a denial...but still wanted to know either way so there was no wondering. so, we had a lot of things going on tonight and we didn't get home until 9pm. i pulled into the driveway and with my headlights, i could see a letter stuck to my front door. i could see ivy tech on the envelope as well. my daughter must've thought i was going crazy because i threw my car into park, ran up to the front door and saw the letter! it was mailed to my old address!!!! the new owners brought it over (i wonder how long they've had it!!!!!) my heart kind of sank b/c i was waiting for a thick envelope...and it was thin. i opened it thinking it was "sorry..." and saw an orientation date. i thought "that's just mean, rubbing it in!" lol!!!!!

i got in!!!!!!!!! whoa...i feel better...just knowing!!!! lol! so...i can now officially stop stalking the mailman (poor mailman! lol!):D

congrats!!!!!!!!!!!

see...all that waiting was for a good cause :specs: but really, what an ordeal you had to go through! guess we'll be seeing each other soon!!!

whoo hoo!! i know sah and i are definitely going to indy. hey all- who else is going to indy? i know some folks applied to a couple of campuses.....:nurse:

yeah indy!!!! i can't wait to start! i'm such a tool...i had to stop into the bookstore today and buy an ivy tech nursing sweatshirt. i don't know...i guess it's some sort of validation for me and a reward for all the hard work up to this point. and it's only going to get better!!!

yeah, i love the program. i hear people complaining all the time about things saying "oh they wouldn't do that at valpo". the instructors/program chairs are tough. they give you rules when you start and expect them to be followed. for example if you show up late for an exam, you have to make it up with 6% off your grade. if you miss a quiz you can't make it up, and that could hurt because the quiz grade average counts as one exam grade. the grading is strict. 93-100 for an a. i had a 4.0 when i started and scored scored a 92 on my teas. my final grade in fundamentals was a b . so, just be prepared for it to be rough (very strict grading on exams, even for spelling/grammar) and to have more studying to do than you could ever imagine. it's a lot of work but you somehow seem to make time for it if it's your priority. 6 out of 20 girls have to start again next semester because they didn't finish fundamentals with a 75%. the material isn't that hard (fundamentals anyway), it's just a lot. i'm very happy i chose this campus. my instructors have been great, and i've learned so much since august. i'm thankful they are hard on us, even the "are you crazy" looks we get when we ask a stupid question are making me bust my tail even harder. we'll see if i feel the same way after i start clinicals on monday . gotta go study for my pharm and med surg exams in the morning. cheers!
