Ivy Tech Thread

Published

I beefed up my summer course load and plan to take MAT 118, COM 102, and IVY 104, all online. Anyone else taking these?

When we had our registration date she asked for volunteers for evenings, and only a few people wanted them. So, she drew our names from a hat and put us into 1 of 4 blocks.

Fundamentals was 8/25-10/1 M&T 8am-1245pm and lab Thur 8am-215pm

Then Pharm started 9/17 and thats W 9am-1245pm

Clinicals (were supposed to start 10/1) are M&T 7am-3pm at St. Marg. in Hammond

Med Surg 10/1-12/20 is W 1pm-345pm and lab Thurs 8am-145pm

So, you have a 50/50 shot at getting day classes. There is only 1 day fundamentals (I think) and 1 night. All the classes are the same on the 2 day and 2 night blocks, just the clinical is different, that's how they get 4 blocks. So if you can get days you'll be all set!

I hope we are asked to volunteer for evenings...that's what I want!!!! :)

I haven't read all the new posts, but wanted to reply to SpecialK.

My kids go to JGE so their schedule is easier to work with then the typical because they don't get off the bus until 4:30. I use before-care with the Y for my first grader because his bus doesn't come till almost 8 of a morning. He gets on the bus with his brothers at 6:45, I drop my daughter off at Head Start at 7:30. (Thank GOD for full-day Head Start!) and then drive to Lawrence.

Clinical days are my only issue and I have that worked out so far. Starting week 6, you will be in clinicals. Most are 6:45-3:30.

The instructors are sticklers about tardiness because it can be a major disruption. If you aren't in the room by the time class begins, the door is locked and you have to wait until the next break (usually an hour or so) before you can come inside.

We had one person show up like 5 minutes late for lab and they weren't allowed to participate at all, even after break.

There have been a few days I was cutting it close but I try to get there by 8:10 if I can just to be safe.

I stressed for a while with working out the schedules and have had the "talk" with my kids. They all know they're not allowed to get sick until Thursday evening and they have to be better by Sunday evenings. LOL

It really does have a way of all working out. Definitely have a back-up for your back-up if one of them should happen to get sick or whatever. You know how life happens. It's always on a test day!!

Hi Mom-

After reviewing your post, I believe I should definitley put my kids in before school care. I'm OCD about being on-time and need to have a cushion to keep from being totally neurotic!! Thanks for your input and advice- it was very helpful!!

congratulations to all who have been accepted into the nursing program, that rocks. honestly, i thought i would have, but i haven't got a letter. i got accepted last semester in lawrence but declined for personal reasons. this time i had a higher score (212) and i am still waiting to hear yes or no.

all kinds of things go through you head when you are waiting. the most prevalent right now is; i droped it off in person and i have no record that i ever did that. i intended to get the application and send it certified to have a record. when i went to the office, they said to just fill it in and leave it, which i did. now i am fearfully imagining that they lost it and i'm out of luck. on the brighter side, maybe they are short handed and are going through the alphabet of something. two hundred and twelve ivy points should be enough, don't you think?

i didn't even get a rejection letter, so i'm in the dark. i am not going to lose any sleep over this, as i got plenty of other problems to lose sleep over, and i don't lose sleep over those either.

i still am thinking about doing some more corequsites in the spring and starting in the fall with nursing, but my paitence is gettin thin right now. at this point it is out of my control (no letter). which brings up another point. people ask me why i wear my hair:jester::specs: the way i do; i just tell them that i have lost control of almost everything in my life, but i still have control of my hair! i even told my pastor that if i needed to step down from elder because of my hair i would do it, but do we really want to be too religious?

so now i check my mailbox daily, like a madman waiting to find a seven million dollar deal in it. sigh.

you are all sweet people on here, maybe you can console me with words of kindness. :specs:

hi wife lover!

i would definitely call and check on your application! in response to your hair and godliness:

1 samuel 16:7

7 but the lord said to samuel, "do not consider his appearance or his height, for i have rejected him. the lord does not look at the things man looks at. man looks at the outward appearance, but the lord looks at the heart."

:) i know you were still undecided about whether or not you actually wanted to go into the nursing program. have you changed your mind?

Hi SpecialK,

Thanks for taking the time to quote scripture, that's cool. Your'e right, I was/am somewhat undecided. Last week I was on vacation, and not around the mailbox. I kind of assumed that I would have a letter when I got home. I vasilate between going and not, but I had decided to go to school for about 3 days in a row, and then Bam! No Letter. So now I really want to go :wink2:.

Actually I think I will follow your advice (and Imagine) and call tomorrow, or maybe email. I suppose if it doesn't work out I could take some more co-requisites. That would help out in the future by spreading it out a little. In the mean time, I will go home and look in the mailbox, and continue to pray about everything!:saint:

ilovemywife,

You will most definitely be accepted to the RN program with that score. No worries!!

Someone else asked about clinicals. They begin week 6. You have to pass Fundamentals, and that means passing the vital signs check off. After that is all done, you move on to Med Surg Lecture/Lab/Clinical and you will have check offs weekly. At clinical, you are only allowed to do the skills you have checked off on. So no passing meds, doing IV's or anything like that if you have not tested off in lab on that skill.

Today was our very first clinical day and it was awesome!! Gotta go now. Tons of paper work to do!

ilovemywife,

i'll say an extra prayer for you tonight! i also dropped my letter off, in fact, there was no one in the office that day so i had to put it in an envelope and put it under the door. talk about trust! but it was ok and the letter came, just as your acceptance letter will. give them a call tomorrow and give yourself some relief. you'll be there with us in january!!!!!

Lol!!:chuckle Isn't that always the way? Perhaps you haven't gotten a letter because you might be on the wait-list and they are shuffling people around? Maybe God was waiting for you to go for it with your whole heart before actually giving you the option!!:redbeathe Good luck and keep us posted!!

Mom-

Congrats on your first clincal day!!!!!:yeah:

Thanks! It was an awesome day. I kinda had that feeling that all of this hard work is finally starting to pay off. I actually felt like a "nurse" yesterday. Today, I'm back to struggling student, but it's good! LOL

I had a big envelope in the mailbox from Ivytech last night. I was suspicious because of the size. It was a Dean's list certificate suitable for framing. I wasn't too impressed to tell the truth! That's not to diminish anyone who is on the list and has worked hard for it. It just doesn't float my boat right now.

I emailed the nursing dept. today...:banghead:

That was sneaky...!! Before people started getting their letters, I was suspicious of a SMALL envelope!! lol! Have you emailed the dept before, and are they good about getting back to you? I would call also if I were you...but of course, I'm not....:)
