Ivy Tech Fall 2017 Hopefuls

Published

Is there anyone else out there, or is it just me? :)

I'd love to connect with others who are applying for the Fall 2017 nursing program.

I am signed up to complete my prerequisites in the spring. English and Public Speaking are already done with an A, from a prior degree with Ivy Tech. They are also going to waive the IVY112 class because I am an Ivy Tech grad.

So I am signed up for APHY101, MATH123, PSYC101, and SOC111.

On one hand, I can't wait for classes to start! On the other hand, with the Holidays, I know the time is going to fly by.

I have the TEAS study guide from Amazon (ATI TEAS Secrets Study Guide: TEAS 6 Complete Study Manual, Full-Length Practice Tests, Review Video Tutorials for the Test of Essential Academic Skills, Sixth Edition: 9781516703838: Medicine & Health Science Books @ Amazon.com) and I am studying it and looking through the first practice test. So far, so good! Lots of info there to cover. Will keep me busy, for sure.

About me: My degree is in Business Administration and my work history is mostly in accounting, but I've been home with our 3 boys for the past 16 years. We have homeschooled for the past seven years. They all went to public school this year, and they are doing GREAT! Now I need a new direction, as well... I've got maybe 30 years of working ahead of me, and I want to have a solid career. I hated being stuck at a desk. Nursing ~ here we go!

Hey you guys!! I hope it's going well for you! I went through this thread AGAIN a few days ago trying to soak up more info about the TEAS. Thought I would send a quick update, I have PASSED chem and aphy 102, what a CRAZY semester that was. I am taking aphy 201 in the fall BUT I am taking my TEAS next month? so I'll be a spring 2020 hopeful lol I just wanted to say you are still inspiring me to keep working hard and keep it going and all your advice has continued to be helpful!!

@Kotylynne ~ glad to hear things are going well for you. Keep on truckin', sister!

I've worked enough in the past 3 months to pay back every dime we spent on nursing school. So I could technically quit now and do something else. LOL. But I think I'll keep at it. ;)

Hope everyone else is doing well / or at least hanging in there. Take care!

How are you liking it still?! How awesome is that that you've paid it all off now! I bet that is SUCH a relief! JUST scheduled TEAS for June 11th so trying to not panic Haha.

Everything else has been doing as good as it can, my daughter is starting preschool when I have my "first day" as well! Next fall will be my first time back on campus for class since 2011! I'm glad I will have that time to adjust before the program though, since I have been online for everything. It's so good to hear from you! I'm sure you all are incredibly busy but it means so much to hear even a little ;) hope all is well for you

It is hard. I’m doing decently at work, but there are a lot of things that school won’t prepare you for. Hang in there and get into the program. I would say that work is scary right now and I am worried a lot. I know I will gain confidence and get better, but in the mean time I am just praying to do ok.

@Leadkrm ~ it is good to hear from you. And I agree. It is hard. But every day I am learning a little more, and feeling a little more confident.

@Kotylynne ~ I don't have any regrets at this point. I am glad I went to school and I'm glad I went into long-term care. I'm even glad that I got into the facility where I am -- even though it's a mess at times.

I think the key is to take one day at a time. And sometimes, you take one minute or even one second at a time. I have ups and downs all day long. I have moments when I feel like a giant loser, and a moment just after that where something happens, a resident or family member says something and I feel like I am completely where I belong. Doing what I'm meant to do.

@Kotylynne hi! I am in the nursing program at the lawrenceburg campus. For myself, the best advice I can give would be to get healthy. I should be in my fourth semester graduating in December but... I'm only starting in my 2nd semester this fall as a repeat. I ate so bad and ended up gaining 20 lbs my first year of nursing. It's also hard to focus and have the motivation to even study. I ended up failing one class by 1/2% and the other by 2/3%, and I withdrew from the spring semester to get healthy. Plus the nursing exams are not like regular tests. My first semester of the program it took about 2 months to adjust to the exams. They require more thought and critical thinking. So in closing, take care of you, and eat healthy. Your mental clarity will thank you for it!

Omg I am so sorry!! That must have been so stressful too! I have been working really hard on that myself as I tend to stress est sometimes (trying to mot do it as we speak because I am going crazy just about the TEAS) but I also worked really hard a whole ago and lost almost 30 pounds and started focusing on trying to he stronger for nursing even though I have a while, but you're right that is SO hard when school starts back up along with life!! I hope things are going better for you this time, I know it is going to be a HUGE adjustment for me.

Leadkrm it's good to hear from you again as well and as always thank you both again for the advice. I am so nervous about everything coming, and it seems to be going by so fast and yet so slowly at the same time

It does tend to feel that way. Just remember that school is only preparing you for the NCLEX. When you start work, don’t be disheartened when/if it feels as though you know nothing. It felt like starting all over again. I must say, through all the stress and nerves, I know it will work out well in the end. Helping people get better is worth every care plan, exam, pop quiz and Simulation day.

Thank you so much! I worry constantly about how well I will actually do and second guess everything even now, but I KNOW this is my calling and this is where I should be so I will try to keep that in mind especially since I HATE feeling like I am clueless. And for what it's worth, I am confident that you are doing a wonderful job, because it is very obvious how much you care. You and 37changes!!
