Return to work
I think it just depends on the person's level of ability to do tasks. I am in orientation and there was another women who I'd say was in her late 70's to early 80's in orientation with me. She had been a nurse for 44 years and was hired to due PRN work at my network's mental health facility. Despite her age, she was able to finish and pass the dosage and calculation test in the same amount of time as me and four other nurses, and able to do the correct depth and rate of chest compressions for CPR. Never underestimate a nurse because of age; looking at her you wouldn't think she could handle the work, but this woman was on it!

Will cardiomyopathy keep you from getting a hospital job?
I just did my health screening for my first nursing job. I was honest and stated I had cardiomyopathy on the forms. Do they consider this a liability and rescind their offer of employment?

Ivy Tech Spring 2018 Hopefuls
I almost hate admitting this but I got in with a 112. I wasn't going to apply but my husband talked me into it by saying even if I only got into the LPN program at least I could be a nurse sooner. So I applied for spring 2018 admission. I decided to apply to all schools that were 2hrs or less away. I got into the Lawrenceburg campus the very first round for RN. And let me tell you...I LOVE THAT CAMPUS!!! The instructors are good and they are not the type that just pass you along, they don't give breaks (making it easy) but they are good and will teach you everything you need to learn. Another interesting thing is there was 18 in my first semester. They took at least 6 students that didn't even apply and offered them a spot. They took it and will be graduating this December. Just because your score isn't very high don't let that be an indication that you'll do poor in nursing school, but I will tell you it's hard. It's very hard. The style of testing is different. I was a biology major 11 years ago and i have taken some serious biology classes like immunology and let me tell you those were easy compared to the nursing exams. If you are serious about wanting to become a nurse then you can do this. It takes work and dedication but only you can be the judge of what you're capable of. Oh, and another thing... my campus is very respected by the area hospitals in Ohio, Kentucky, and their own local hospital. Plus they received a 100% pass rate on the NCLEX that semester and I know they just had a 100% pass rate this spring semester as well. To claim that honor means everyone had to pass the first time they took the NCLEX.

Ivy Tech Fall 2017 Hopefuls
@Kotylynne hi! I am in the nursing program at the lawrenceburg campus. For myself, the best advice I can give would be to get healthy. I should be in my fourth semester graduating in December but... I'm only starting in my 2nd semester this fall as a repeat. I ate so bad and ended up gaining 20 lbs my first year of nursing. It's also hard to focus and have the motivation to even study. I ended up failing one class by 1/2% and the other by 2/3%, and I withdrew from the spring semester to get healthy. Plus the nursing exams are not like regular tests. My first semester of the program it took about 2 months to adjust to the exams. They require more thought and critical thinking. So in closing, take care of you, and eat healthy. Your mental clarity will thank you for it!

The interesting thing about my drive is that it's so pleasant that the hour and forty minutes go by fast. I only spend maybe 20 minutes on the interstate. As for bad weather, there were a few days last semester, but fortunately I drive a four wheel drive trail blazer. Yes, it is worth it. I love my campus, the instructors and my classmates. We had a small conversation on Facebook the other day how we couldn't wait for the fall semester to start back up because we all miss each other. Going back to the application process, my campus was actually number five on my list of eight campuses I applied to. I actually got in on the first round pick. The campuses I applied to were two hours or less from home. To be honest, I'm really glad I didn't get into the first four campuses. I really love my campus, and they had a 100% pass rate this past spring for the NCLEX exam. Those pass rates are based on the very first attempt. Well, anyways, thank you and best of luck to you as well.

Ivy Tech Spring 2018 Hopefuls
I go to the Lawrenceburg campus, it was one of the campuses I applied to. This is my second semester and there were at least six students in my class that didn't apply to the Lawrenceburg campus and they called them and offered them a spot in the RN program. Two of are from Indy, one from Martinsville, two from Anderson, and one from New Castle. For myself it's one hour and forty minute drive but I love this campus and the instructors. Some of those students had put in transfers to get closer to home, don't know if they got it yet. That's something to consider, you can always put in for a transfer if a spot is available. All of those students I mention also have jobs. But they were able to make it work. Think of it this way, at least you'd have a foot in the door.

Ivy Tech Fall 2017 Hopefuls
Hi Yoda Mans. I just finished my first semester at the Lawrenceburg campus for RN. The style of testing is very different. There were 18 students initially in my class. Five of them failed Med-surg and of course won't get to move on with us. It's sad because you develop attachments to your classmates because you're with them more than your family, well maybe that's an exaggeration but my first semester was four days a week, with clinical being 6 hours and lab being 7 hours. My other two days the classes were 3 hours each. So you get close to your classmates. Believe it or not, me and just about everyone in my class is ready to go back because we miss each other. Good luck to you.

Hi simtes. The only thing i can think of is to talk to a nursing advisor or the nursing program chair. They will be able to give you the best advice.

Current LPN Student
Wow, I had no idea that they had LPN programs that short! No, my program is ASN. I seen your post when I was perusing through the student section a few days ago. I like to read about other students and future nursing students and I thought your initial post was very inspiring. You really give hope, and that's what a lot of us students need.

I had my first nursing school orientation on November 14. There was a quote on the board when I walked into the room - "Successful people are not gifted; they just work hard and succeed on purpose." - G.K. Neilsen I agree, if you want something bad enough, you'll do whatever it takes.

Am I too small to be a nurse?
Just because you're small doesn't mean you can't be quick on your feet or handle the demands of patient care. Let me give you an example that goes in the opposite direction - 18 years ago I gave birth via c-section. I bled internally for 9 hours before I almost passed out due to blood loss. My post partum nurse and I was reminiscing when I told her I was getting ready to go out. She jumped out of her chair, ran to the foot of the bed and cranked the bed by hand at crazy speed to keep me from passing out. No, she wasn't 92 lbs. More like 392 - 425 lbs. She was amazing. I had been complaining for hours to my former nurses and not one of them did anything but give me more meds. Then my new nurse who I've had before with a previous birth saves my life. Don't let anyone tell you you are too small. Size doesn't determine if you can do your job competently.

I'm not sure what campuses to tell you. Have you tried going to the nursing board's website and looking at nclex pass rates? Have you tried the thread on all nurses called fall 2017 ivytech hopefuls? A person named 37changes could tell you about the Muncie campus. Other than what I mentioned, I'm not really sure what to tell you.

Ivy Tech Spring 2018 Hopefuls
I just heard from my campus - registration is November 14, 10-1 and orientation is January 11, 9-3. The email mentioned something about having to pay for the back ground check that day. I don't know if they are talking about registration or orientation. The cost is $131.90 This is for Lawrenceburg campus
