Is there anyone else out there, or is it just me? :)
I'd love to connect with others who are applying for the Fall 2017 nursing program.
I am signed up to complete my prerequisites in the spring. English and Public Speaking are already done with an A, from a prior degree with Ivy Tech. They are also going to waive the IVY112 class because I am an Ivy Tech grad.
So I am signed up for APHY101, MATH123, PSYC101, and SOC111.
On one hand, I can't wait for classes to start! On the other hand, with the Holidays, I know the time is going to fly by.
I have the TEAS study guide from Amazon (ATI TEAS Secrets Study Guide: TEAS 6 Complete Study Manual, Full-Length Practice Tests, Review Video Tutorials for the Test of Essential Academic Skills, Sixth Edition: 9781516703838: Medicine & Health Science Books @ Amazon.com) and I am studying it and looking through the first practice test. So far, so good! Lots of info there to cover. Will keep me busy, for sure.
About me: My degree is in Business Administration and my work history is mostly in accounting, but I've been home with our 3 boys for the past 16 years. We have homeschooled for the past seven years. They all went to public school this year, and they are doing GREAT! Now I need a new direction, as well... I've got maybe 30 years of working ahead of me, and I want to have a solid career. I hated being stuck at a desk. Nursing ~ here we go!
i had to take mine in Columbus. Franklin is available for placements tests but not the teas test unfortunately. My best advise would be to make sure all of your co requisites are finished before you would start the program, that way the only classes you have to worry about are the program specific ones. I still have two co requisites to worry about fitting in and it's stressing me a tad bit.
Mine will be all done after this semester. I purposely took all of them to get them out of the way.
Leadkrm, so glad you're still here & sharing your experience. Great info about your clinicals etc. I have been telling my husband that it will probably be like that -- they tell me where to be and when, and we just have to make it happen. One way or another!
During our orientation on Thursday, we were able to take a lunch with a lot of current and former students. They all answered questions very honestly and have confirmed many things I was always wondering about. The biggest one being, do the schedules ever bend to our will? The answer was a sad no. It's just as the department chair told me a few months ago, there are so many students and only so many classes in each semester and her only promise is that everyone will be in a class that they need when she is done with scheduling. She also has to try and keep a few slots open for students who had to retake a class or had to take some time off from school. I have gathered that the hardest part of this school curriculum for adults is just working an already busy life around the class schedule. I have been blessed with a wonderful wife who is able to let me take the time off from work to be a full time student and a stay at home father. This allows me to focus primarily on our children and my school work.
That is awesome that you are able to do that. I know we are going to take a financial hit in the short term for me to be able to do this -- not only to pay for the schooling, but because my husband will have to be home with the kids more, too. They are all in school now, but won't be in the summer -- and they have approximately one million activities going on in the evenings and weekends sometimes. haha
Thankfully, he finally has enough seniority with his company that he is able to have more flexibility than he has ever had before. I think we can make this work!
How old are your kids?
I have a 6 year old in school and a 4 year old. I agree that the short term hit financially will be worth the job security and job availability for you after gaining your license. That's how we got through my wife's schooling. I worked and she did school and managed the children for the most part. When she was done and worked for about a year, that's when I stopped working and started school.
I just got my syllabus for APHY101. It says it requires a "lab coat or scrub top" for labs. Did you all have to do this? And did they expect you to have it for the first class?
Your campus might be different but we did not require either a lab coat or a scrub top. Email your instructor to double check because the department chair usually writes the syllabus and the instructor might vary from it slightly.
I will be starting the Lafayette campus in the Fall. Taking my prereqs. Pretty excited. My name is Marquiesha. I have a 7 year old son and a 3 month old daughter. I am so beyond excited to start and that my mama is going to help me with the cost, so I won't be in that much debt. I am 23. This nursing passion of mine is real and becoming a nurse is long overdue for me. Good luck to you all.
Hi all! I am currently a full-time Spanish medical interpreter for IU health and working in the medical field for the past 4 years has sparked a desire to become an RN and eventually an NP. I am planning on applying for Fall 2017 ASN program at lawrence campus, preferably, but will most likely apply to other campuses to increase my chances. I have a BA in Spanish and I applied and was accepted into IUPUI's accelerated nursing program but decided to decline because of time commitment and cost. But since that was my original plan, I've completed all pre-reqs and co-reqs/elective classes as well so all I have to worry about for Ivy tech are nursing courses which I know will already keep me busy enough. I'm hoping to continue working as an interpreter while in school and thankfully my manager is super supportive and willing to be flexible with my schedule. I have a lot of downtime at work, and want to keep my job as long as possible to take advantage of the benefits including tuition reimbursement and hopefully continue on as a nurse in the same hospital system! I have an A in A&P 101 and Psych and a B in Eng making my score 55 for classes. I've scheduled my TEAs for Feb 9th so fingers crossed I really don't want to have to take it twice. Good luck to you all!
Wow, it sounds as though you have a very ideal situation! Congratulations on having all the prerequisites finished. In my opinion, as long as you get an 80 or above on the teas, you will have a choice of your desired campus. Be careful with your financial aid because although the nursing classes take up a ton of time, I don't think that any semester of nursing classes goes over 12 credit hours except maybe one semester. If your financial aid has credit hour conditions, you might have to take an additional class to gain the minimum 12 credit hours for full time student status. I hope that you get into Lawrence since you can take a semester in the summer and graduate as soon as 17 months!
