Ivy Tech Fall 2017 Hopefuls

Published

Is there anyone else out there, or is it just me? :)

I'd love to connect with others who are applying for the Fall 2017 nursing program.

I am signed up to complete my prerequisites in the spring. English and Public Speaking are already done with an A, from a prior degree with Ivy Tech. They are also going to waive the IVY112 class because I am an Ivy Tech grad.

So I am signed up for APHY101, MATH123, PSYC101, and SOC111.

On one hand, I can't wait for classes to start! On the other hand, with the Holidays, I know the time is going to fly by.

I have the TEAS study guide from Amazon (ATI TEAS Secrets Study Guide: TEAS 6 Complete Study Manual, Full-Length Practice Tests, Review Video Tutorials for the Test of Essential Academic Skills, Sixth Edition: 9781516703838: Medicine & Health Science Books @ Amazon.com) and I am studying it and looking through the first practice test. So far, so good! Lots of info there to cover. Will keep me busy, for sure.

About me: My degree is in Business Administration and my work history is mostly in accounting, but I've been home with our 3 boys for the past 16 years. We have homeschooled for the past seven years. They all went to public school this year, and they are doing GREAT! Now I need a new direction, as well... I've got maybe 30 years of working ahead of me, and I want to have a solid career. I hated being stuck at a desk. Nursing ~ here we go!

I asked my nursing advisor whether nursing program continues through the summer in muncie ~ and never got a response. o_o

Anyone know for sure?

I'm pretty sure they take classes through the summer. I think it's something they just recently started.

if I were you 37changes, I would bypass my counselor and contact the chair of the nursing department directly by email. I don't know about your campus, but my advisors were almost always clueless with questions I had about nursing program details. These guidance counselors were not regular ones either, they were counselors for students with a focus in nursing interests. It got so upsetting at times not getting the info I needed from them. I finally decided to contact the department chair and would usually get an email returned at least once a day.

Thanks, guys.

Leadkrm -- I actually got lucky and met with the department chair, and she IS my advisor. So I'd say she's just really busy and forgot to return my email & answer my question. It was right before Christmas break.

Apparently the lab coat or scrub top really is required for APHY101. I emailed the instructor and asked him if we would need it for the first class (tomorrow) and he said, "I'll give you a pass". Hmmmm. Guess I will be scrub shopping today!?

Well at least you got that issue cleared up. I recently washed my ivy tech scrub top with chapstick on accident and had grease spots all over it. I couldn't get the spots out myself and the bookstore had no more available. I got lucky and the dry cleaners were able to get the top clean. The Lawrence uniform top costs $51. After all I paid for books and supplies this semester, I was relieved that I could save my top for $7.50

Hi 37changes

I was actually told by my advisor that we will go in the summer. We would start in August and graduate in August.

Hi 37changes

all of the LPN classes do a 12 month program which includes the summer. I think the OP was interested in the traditional ASN track of study, but what you say is true. The practical nursing students will be in school over summer and graduate in 12 months.

I need to just email her again and ask. We were talking back and forth about some other things, and I think that question just got lost in the shuffle... or forgotten, like I said.

So I found a green scrub top in the bookstore for $14. It doesn't say Ivy Tech on it or anything, but I think it'll do!

Leadkrm ~ how is your stuff going so far?!

Well because of MLK day, I haven't started class yet, but wish me luck because I have my first nursing lab tomorrow. We had a small 10 question quiz on Tuesday that I received a 10/10 on so hopefully that means I'll be ready for class.

Wishing you the best of luck for sure. Hope your day went well! :)

So I had my first APHY101 class today and had to get some groceries and just got home.

WOW. I would love to hear from any of you who felt pretty dumb on their first day of class. Things were good in the first 2 hours in the classroom. He talked, we took some notes, there was a power point -- no big deal. I like the instructor. He's easy to talk to. One thing he said that gave me a moment of pause was that the final exam brings most people's grade down by a letter. Well, insert expletives here. I was told I MUST get an A in this class... So how does that work?! Lol. Sigh.

When we moved over to the lab, he pretty much let us loose with section 1 of our lab book. And during that two hours I started to have serious doubts about whether I can do this. I talked to a few other people, as well as the instructor, and gathered that most people felt the same way. A little overwhelmed. I knew this class was not going to be a piece of cake -- but not sure if I was prepared to feel this way on the first day.

One thing contributing is that the class begins at 8:00 am. I had to get up at 4:20 in order to shower, pack lunches for the kids, make their breakfasts, and get out the door on time. I have a weird nervous stomach, so I did not eat before class. I just felt better this way. This is not a huge deal because I eat pretty low-carb as it is, and don't have the crazy ups and downs with my blood sugar. BUT. Then we get into class and we are informed that no drinks are allowed. No coffee -- which I had brought with me -- not even any water. This is due to new carpet being installed in the classroom, and then in the lab ~ well, because it's the lab.

So... I hope next week will be better, as I will somehow make sure I've had coffee AND breakfast before I go. Lots and lots of studying to be done between now and then, though.

I have officially completed my first week of classes. No class on Monday due to MLK day, yes -- but that missed class was my MATH123 which meets twice a week. So I have met all of my instructors and got a feel for what it is going to be like, being back in college for the first time in 16 years. I am doing ok. But I gotta go now ~ so much to do! ;)

If our campuses are the same then the anatomy classes have very little room for error. Aphy 101 was based on 600 points. This only allows 60 points to be missed before you drop to a B grade. We had

-3 unit test each in lab and lecture 50pts each total of 300pts.

-1 final for lab and 1 for lecture 100pts each

tota of 200pts.

-10 quizzes in lecture and 10 quizzes in lab each for 5 points for a total of 100pts.

APHY102 was a tad different. It was still based on a 600pt total. The difference was that we did not have quizzes and had an additional unit test. So

-4 unit tests totaling 400pts

-1 lab final and 1 lecture final both worth 100pts for a total of 200pts.

Oddly I finished each class with the same total of 563/600 points. My 101 class focused more on anatomy, while my 102 instructor worked us more on physiology. I do believe that I was the only one in my 101 class with an A and 1 of 2 people in my 102 class with an A.
