Ivy Tech Fall 2017 Hopefuls

Published

Is there anyone else out there, or is it just me? :)

I'd love to connect with others who are applying for the Fall 2017 nursing program.

I am signed up to complete my prerequisites in the spring. English and Public Speaking are already done with an A, from a prior degree with Ivy Tech. They are also going to waive the IVY112 class because I am an Ivy Tech grad.

So I am signed up for APHY101, MATH123, PSYC101, and SOC111.

On one hand, I can't wait for classes to start! On the other hand, with the Holidays, I know the time is going to fly by.

I have the TEAS study guide from Amazon (ATI TEAS Secrets Study Guide: TEAS 6 Complete Study Manual, Full-Length Practice Tests, Review Video Tutorials for the Test of Essential Academic Skills, Sixth Edition: 9781516703838: Medicine & Health Science Books @ Amazon.com) and I am studying it and looking through the first practice test. So far, so good! Lots of info there to cover. Will keep me busy, for sure.

About me: My degree is in Business Administration and my work history is mostly in accounting, but I've been home with our 3 boys for the past 16 years. We have homeschooled for the past seven years. They all went to public school this year, and they are doing GREAT! Now I need a new direction, as well... I've got maybe 30 years of working ahead of me, and I want to have a solid career. I hated being stuck at a desk. Nursing ~ here we go!

Leadkrm ~ thanks so much for being here to chat me through this. I really appreciate your support. I feel so relieved to be done with this now!

That is great 37 changes! I am so happy for you. I think what I am going to do is retake the teas in July, and finish the four classes they have you taking during the nursing program, taking two in the summer and two this fall and apply for the spring 2018 program. The only thing is it limits me to only three schools for the RN program - Anderson, which would be my first choice, Indy, and Kokomo, which is by far my last choice since it will take about an hour and a half to get there. In regards to the teas, I am thoroughly going through that teas book. Again, congratulations on your high score.

Thanks! :)

I purchased the Teas Mastery app for my phone, back in November. I used it here and there -- sometimes more than others -- and I really hit it hard in the past couple of weeks. I like how it helps you narrow down the areas to focus on. You flag each question and terminology card with "know", "somewhat know", or "don't know". I would say this app OVERprepared me in some areas, and that is definitely where I'd prefer to be. Worth every penny, for sure.

I don't do social media..... so any spare second, say at the doctor's office or in-between classes, even on break or whatever -- you can bet I was on that app. Do as little or as much as you like -- jump on for one question or fifty. Eventually you start making connections about things that didn't sound familiar at all in the beginning.

37changes, that is an absolute gangster score. Did you drop the microphone as you left the room? So glad that the stress is over. Also, no worries, I enjoy helping out. Anytime

I saw your comment first thing this morning and it made me smile. And laugh. THANKS! :) I want to post about the whole experience sometime ~ but now I have a pressing research paper I've put off. Everybody have a great weekend!

You as well! Good luck on the paper!

Hi everyone! I took the TEAS 6 for the first time in January. I ended up scoring a 54. For the program I'm applying to, I must have a 58.7 or better. I became discouraged and didn't study anytime after. Last month I built up the courage to start studying again. So, I took the Practice A test on the ATI site. I scored a 50 because I hadn't studied since January. Well, today after a month of studying, I scored a 65.4. I scored 15 points higher since I've studied!

I plan to retest next month. I am going to study my weak areas. Do you think I have a good chance at passing now or even getting a higher score once I retest? Have you ever scored higher on the actual exam than you did on the practice? I'm still super nervous about retaking. Any advice would help! Thanks in advance!

I plan to apply at Richmond, Muncie, and New Castle. Hopefully I score enough. I have the study guide, I've watched YouTube videos for my science and math, and I even bought the TEAS Mastery App. I'm studying my butt off but I'm scared to death I won't do as well. Or maybe I'm over reacting!

Hi Kadijah ~ I typed up a big response to you this morning on my phone, and then something went wrong and it didn't post. That seems to happen too often. Sorry!

What program are you applying to where you need a 58.7? Just curious ~ I haven't heard of this.

Will respond more soon. I have been reading ALL day for a research paper I need to get finished! ;)

Hello again! I'm applying to ivy tech. I have to score proficient or better. A score of 58.7 (starting point for proficient) or higher. I take the exam the 2nd time next month..and I'm still nervous. I was nervous just taking the practice tests! If it's easier, email me at [email protected] we could connect better that way. Thank you for getting back!

Kadijah, did you read our recent conversation re: TEAS testing deadline? The official word is that our testing has to be finished one month prior to the application deadline. I wonder if your advisor is telling you something different? My advisor stressed to me that it can take up to 30 days for "official results" to post.

Since you have RN in your username, and you say you have to test again next month, I assume you are trying to get into the ADN program this fall. I just don't want you to stress & worry and then have it turn out to be too late. I am also very curious if your advisor is telling you that you can do it that close to the deadline and it will count. It doesn't matter for me now ~ but last week I was definitely wondering if I could give myself more time. Your response may help others in a similar boat.

Another thought is that you can only take the TEAS exam two times in 2 years ~ so if you aren't confident with applying now, you may consider saving that second attempt until you feel solid on the material, and then applying for a different program start -- like maybe in the spring?

To be honest, the 58.7 figure you are going by is the bare, bare minimum that they will even consider. You want to score much higher than that to be competitive for the RN program. Do you already have A's in APHY, ENG, and PSYC, so you have already secured those 60 points?

I'm part of a facebook group for students interested in/planning to apply for Ivy tech nursing program and current students. The question about the deadline for TEAS testing has come up, and it seems as though each campus has been told different things from their different advisors on this. Someone posted a screenshot of the nursing manual and it states it must be 30 days prior but a lot of students have been told by their advisors (and It was also stated at the information session in lawrence) that it can be taken days before the deadline, as long as you give it enough time to show up on the online application.

That and the fact you have to wait 30 days between the two attempts it's probably stated that way so that if you aren't happy with your first score you can still attempt again in time for the deadline? Either way I'm more on the cautious side and decided to take it way ahead to get the stress out of the way.
