Ivy Tech Fall 2017 Hopefuls

Published

Is there anyone else out there, or is it just me? :)

I'd love to connect with others who are applying for the Fall 2017 nursing program.

I am signed up to complete my prerequisites in the spring. English and Public Speaking are already done with an A, from a prior degree with Ivy Tech. They are also going to waive the IVY112 class because I am an Ivy Tech grad.

So I am signed up for APHY101, MATH123, PSYC101, and SOC111.

On one hand, I can't wait for classes to start! On the other hand, with the Holidays, I know the time is going to fly by.

I have the TEAS study guide from Amazon (ATI TEAS Secrets Study Guide: TEAS 6 Complete Study Manual, Full-Length Practice Tests, Review Video Tutorials for the Test of Essential Academic Skills, Sixth Edition: 9781516703838: Medicine & Health Science Books @ Amazon.com) and I am studying it and looking through the first practice test. So far, so good! Lots of info there to cover. Will keep me busy, for sure.

About me: My degree is in Business Administration and my work history is mostly in accounting, but I've been home with our 3 boys for the past 16 years. We have homeschooled for the past seven years. They all went to public school this year, and they are doing GREAT! Now I need a new direction, as well... I've got maybe 30 years of working ahead of me, and I want to have a solid career. I hated being stuck at a desk. Nursing ~ here we go!

So I'm planning on applying to Ivy Tech Indianapolis ADN program. My prerequisites are 2 A's and a C in A&P 101 is it possible that I could be accepted if I do really well on my TEAS? Like if I can manage to get 130/160 pts do I have a chance or is it just too competitive?

Yes you can get in with a 130, but the pool of applicants is different each semester. This means that in one semester a 130 could be a great score and another semester it could be the bottom of the barrel. I personally believe it is a very average score and you will probably get in no problem with 130.

Well, guys, I went ahead & scheduled my TEAS for next Friday -- April 7. I decided to do a Friday because that's the only day I don't have classes. I decided on the 7th because if *something* in life happens and I can't make it, I can still get it done the next week.

Had the bones test today in anatomy and physiology. We had 50 blanks to fill in with various bones and their various parts, with no skeleton in the room, no word list, nothing. Just bones laying all over the lab tables with numbers on them. We went around the room single file and had maybe 20 or 30 seconds with each bone. We got to do this twice. There were several I just drew a total blank on so I just wrote something down, several times feeling like I did not have the right name or did not have the entire name. I ended up with a score of 33 out of 50 and honestly I am OK with that. It was very difficult for all of us, I think. We just aren't getting much instruction in this class, and a lot of times I feel like I am on my own. I can't complain too much, I do like the instructor, and I have done well on every other assignment. As of now, I still have an A in the class, but whether I can keep that remains to be seen.

Another question about the TEAS, if anyone can answer it:

I don't think you can skip from section-to-section..... I am picturing that you have to "completely complete" a section, and then can go take a short break, before you move on to the next section.

But can you skip around within a section? I mean, can you definitely skip a question and come back to it later?

That's correct, you can't jump from section to section. There is an allotted amount of time for each section and if you finish before that time is up it does not roll over into another section. You can take 10 min break I believe.... between the first two sections. You can skip around within a section, answers are not final until you've submitted everything at the end. I skipped questions that were taking a lot of time and went back or if I had extra time at the end I went back and made sure I felt good about the answers I had chosen.

That's great ~ thanks so much! :)

Think of it kind of like the sat test. Each section has an allotted time. And each section is graded to give you an accumulative total score, but you get individual stats on each section to tell how you performed, as well as stats for your total score. Turpturned has the right idea about it, except I received no break.

No break ~ no way! I read somewhere on here about taking a break after each section, and I think that's a good idea. At least walk around a little bit, get a drink of water, go to the bathroom. No break?! Were you for sure not "allowed" one..... Or did you just not ask for one? I called and talked to the guy at the testing center and he told me that they "could not stop the time" but that yes, I could take a short break after each section. He said they give you 4 hours for the test (and I thought it was 3.5) so I said, well maybe they have built in some extra time for breaks? He said maybe. I don't know if he was very clear on the details. Lol.

I never took the SAT, ACT... My previous degree is also from Ivy Tech, and it wasn't required. So this will really be my first experience of this kind. :nailbiting:

I didn't say I wasn't allowed to have one, but I wasn't told there was a break if there was one, also they give you that much time, but it took me no where the time they allot to finish the test. I think I had at least 15 minutes left on each section. It's like when you learn the head to toe assessment in nursing. They tell you that you have 20 minutes to get it done, but it only takes 7-10 minutes to do. You guys, the one thing I've learned in this process is that the faculty over express the difficulties of the program. Pretty much worst case scenereo prepping. They told me and my pal that anything under a 140 was not very competitive, but my friend got in with a 132 and I think someone in my class had a 128 and got in the Asn at Lawrence. I think they over exaggerate it to keep the faint of heart out. Surely, I could be wrong, but this is my experience.

Leadkrm, I am glad to hear you say that, and I have wondered about that. I swear I am not trying to sound cocky at all, but I look around at the other people in some of my classes and I observe things. And I think to myself, that I am probably taking it a lot more seriously than some of them. I would rather be over prepared than under prepared, and I am treating this like my life depends on it because it kind of does! This is going to determine my path. If I don't make it into the nursing program, I don't know what our next step will be.

I sometimes wonder if I am smart enough to do this, but I know that all of those people there are not smarter than I am. I know that the nurses we dealt with in the ER last week don't appear to be total geniuses, LOL. They are normal people just like you and me who had the determination to make it through. And who have the determination to make it through each day.

I will give it 100%. That's the best I can do. I'm glad to hear that it just *might* be enough. :)

No prob at all. Same here. People in my pre reqs were seemingly unserious. They would routinely not come to class or leave early and complain when their grade suffered. It's not for everyone. People who are vigilant and keep on their game get in, and the ones complaining about the program are usually the ones doing poorly.

Ok, seriously......... Are you telling me there is NO way you can drink a cup of coffee, at any point, in the middle of this thing? :cautious:

:coffee:

Studying like crazy today. Just sipping a cup now, and realizing what a difference it makes! ......Seriously?!
