Ivy Tech Fall 2017 Hopefuls

Published

Is there anyone else out there, or is it just me? :)

I'd love to connect with others who are applying for the Fall 2017 nursing program.

I am signed up to complete my prerequisites in the spring. English and Public Speaking are already done with an A, from a prior degree with Ivy Tech. They are also going to waive the IVY112 class because I am an Ivy Tech grad.

So I am signed up for APHY101, MATH123, PSYC101, and SOC111.

On one hand, I can't wait for classes to start! On the other hand, with the Holidays, I know the time is going to fly by.

I have the TEAS study guide from Amazon (ATI TEAS Secrets Study Guide: TEAS 6 Complete Study Manual, Full-Length Practice Tests, Review Video Tutorials for the Test of Essential Academic Skills, Sixth Edition: 9781516703838: Medicine & Health Science Books @ Amazon.com) and I am studying it and looking through the first practice test. So far, so good! Lots of info there to cover. Will keep me busy, for sure.

About me: My degree is in Business Administration and my work history is mostly in accounting, but I've been home with our 3 boys for the past 16 years. We have homeschooled for the past seven years. They all went to public school this year, and they are doing GREAT! Now I need a new direction, as well... I've got maybe 30 years of working ahead of me, and I want to have a solid career. I hated being stuck at a desk. Nursing ~ here we go!

More on the cautious side here, as well. My advisor is the Nursing Department Chair for Muncie. When I spoke with her in the fall, she advised me to take it at least 30 days before the application deadline -- and then as we talked further, she told me it may be a good idea to take it in March "in case I failed for some reason" so I could take it again in April and STILL be 30 days away from that deadline. In no way did I ever get the feeling from her that I should attempt to take it in May. So it's interesting to hear that others are being advised differently. I just hope it's not to their detriment. Thanks for sharing. I'm not on facebook!

I have total of 50/60 points in the prereqs. I've spoke to the dean and was told by her that, that the 30 days prior is an error. It wasn't fixed before handing out or fixed online. She told me I can take it 48 hours prior to the application deadline.

I don't know what to do. I'm feeling so discouraged now. I don't mind starting LPN at all. I just prefer to go straight into RN. Of course I wanna be on the safe side but I also want to be sure I'm prepared enough as well

Kadijah, having 50/60 on your pre-reqs is a great start! Having up to 48 hours before the deadline... well, that gives you even more of an advantage.

I'm not trying to be discouraging in any way ~ just trying to help. This process is stressful. I would hate to see someone try so hard and then get hung up on a technicality or misunderstanding. You know?

A big part of what I posted yesterday morning (which got lost) was this: FOCUS. Zero in on your areas of weakness. I know this may sound like, "duh" ... but I do believe there is an art to this process.

Your scores on your previous TEAS should show you where to focus first. What was your lowest percentage? Or were they all equally low?

The TEAS Mastery app is so great because you can use it all the time, wherever you are. Study what you feel like studying at the time. I often didn't do the math because I was "out and about" doing things, and I would have needed some scrap paper. I often got frustrated and burnt out by some of the science stuff, and had to come back to it later when I was in the right frame of mind. I love how you can customize it, color-code each question, pick what you want to do at that time. Also be SURE to check out the "Terminology" cards -- I found those to be a big help.

Oh man 37changes, you're great! I hope I get into the program. If I score good enough, I'm applying to Muncie, Richmond, and New Castle. Muncie is my second choice and Richmond is my first. Since I live here and all lol. I love the app!

My my last practice test, I scored these below:

reading: 72.3

math: 59.4

science: 62.8

english: 62.5

total: 65.4

I scored 15 points higher than my first practice. So I gotta study hard! I'm super determined! I'm also super nervous too.

Kadijah, if I were you, I would seriously consider checking out Moby Max. I homeschooled my kids for seven years, and we had a membership to that site. I don't remember if you have to sign up as a homeschooler, but I believe I got a 30 day free trial. Definitely check it out. If you can get access to that site, and set yourself up as a student, there are assessment tests for language arts and for math. Go through the assessments, and begin wherever they tell you to begin. If you have time for this, I really believe it would be beneficial.

Wow, this is a lot to think about. I had plans to just wait and apply for Spring 2018 program. My Teas score showed up that same night I took it. I have been studying every night since. I took mine April 3, I could retake it May 3 - 10. Hmm...if I'm ready, I think I may just do that. Thanks KadijahRn, TerpturnedRN, and 37changes

It is certainly a lot to think about and study! Good luck to you angmcav! Which campus are you applying to? What was your score? I wish you luck on your second attempt!

If I feel like I'm ready to retest and do well on it, I am going to apply to Indy, Muncie, NewCastle, Richmond, kokomo, and Columbus. The latter two are definitely my last choice. Muncie or Richmond are my first two choices.

My original Teas score was only a 66.7%, but I also put very little effort into studying.

Same here! Richmond would be my first and muncie is my second choice

No problem at all. This is why I started the discussion -- there is so much to discuss! ;)

Hello friends,

min glad to join this thread. I'm in Sellersburg now, but only applying to Indianapolis for ASN fall 2017. I just took the TEAS April 7, and scored a 90.7. (My advisor told me that a 75-80 would just put me in the competitive range). I took Psych and Engl last semester and got A's. I am taking anatomy now, but am sure I will have an A, since I'm currently sitting at a 97% with only a month to go.

I am so curious to see many people advised by ivy tech staff not to retake classes they received B's in. I have been told by everyone I MUST get all As. I wasn't aware we could get in with anything less. Do you think it varies for each campus? Sellersburg lets in 50 out of about 100 applicants. I'm nervous, because I'm sure it will be much more competitive in Indy ( where I'm applying ) because the population is larger. Anyone applying to Indy or know anything about that?

I'm applying to Indy also. I have 146 points and feel pretty confident I will get in mostly because of my TEAS score I got a 91% I got a B in English from when I took it in high school. I think anyone applying at the Indy campus with a 140 or above should feel pretty confident they will get accepted. Yes it's a bigger pool and every semester is different because you don't know who you're up against but from what I've seen and the points that get accepted it's still competitive, it's once you start getting into the lower range of points that they start looking at your science scores on TEAS and go into decimals and every point makes a huge difference. Someone could have a B in English and Psych and an A in anatomy and if they score in the 90's on the TEAS still have a good chance of getting in, in my opinion it's all about the points.
