Ivy Tech 'Fall 2010' Applicants

U.S.A. Indiana

Published

Hi everyone! I wanted to start a thread for those of us planning on applying by April 1st....

Has anyone taken the TEAS yet? Where are you with your pre-reqs? What campus are you applying to?

I am planning on taking the TEAS in December, so I have enough time to retake it :) and this is my first semester at Ivy Tech. I'm taking APHY 101, ENGL 111, and PSYC 101 all this semester and I will complete APHY 102 next semester. I am planning on applying to Indy.

And good luck to all the Spring 2010 applicants! :yeah:Hope everyone gets in!!!

Just letting you know, I did get into Kokomo with 210, but they didn't print the accepted scores, so I don't know what the cut off was. Although I am extremely happy, my heart is also a little heavy because it does seem so unfair when there is only a couple of points difference in a Teas test, or a percentage or two between an A or a B. I think the PTA program has the right idea in that they have a prereq class that is sort of an orientation to physical therapy, where they observe and grade on clinical ability as well as academics. The grade you get in that class weighs heavily, so it is not just gpa and Teas. For Ericka- I have been praying for PN for you today. From your posts, I think you would make a wonderful and caring nurse, and be such an asset to the profession. Also remember, many people applied to multiple programs, so that will open a lot of spots.

I completely agree with you! PTA is on the right track. Nursing should learn from them!!!!

I remember this 2 week wait just a year ago. It's really stressful. Good Luck to those who get in; I'm sorry to those who didn't get in.

Just wanted to give some input to those who didn't get in the program they were hoping for. Keep your chins up and don't give up on your dreams and hopes to become a Nurse. I know getting straight A's and then it all coming down to the Teas really sucks. It's a really hard test.

An instructor made a valid point when I was applying, a perspective I hadn't looked at before. She said that the students are the ones to blame for making it so competitive. This is very true. People keep retaking classes to get A's and retaking the Teas to get higher scores. The school just accepts the higher scores, which of course they would do that (you know what i mean?).

I do agree with some comments that said that they should tell you how competitive it is. When I first started back at Ivy Tech, I had NO IDEA how hard it was going to be to get in the program. I also had no idea how hard the actual program would be. It's no joke. It is really difficult. I think I'm actually glad that nobody told me because I don't think I would have had enough confidence in myself, caused me to switch career paths, and I would have missed out on how wonderful Nursing is. Long sentence there, sorry!

I am sure they would love the expand their programs, but one thing I've learned while doing this program is that clinical spots are hard to come by as it is. I know the dept is fighting against all the other schools for clinical opportunities. We had to do other activities for clinical hours because they didn't have enough full time clinical space available for us, and I am in Indy; we have loads of hospitals.

But if you didn't get in DON'T GIVE UP!! reapply for Jan start date. They have fewer applicants for January. Also, if you only want RN, consider applying for LPN as well. you can always transition over. you can get your LPN, then start working and let your employer pay for your RN degree. OR get your CNA, start working, then let your employer pay for your LPN or RN. if you don't have your co-reqs done, go ahead and get them finished in the meantime.

Keep your chin up and keep focused. Don't let your dream go away. Start working at a hospital as a care tech or any position that allows you to get your foot in the door. This will give you a heads up on Nursing, especially clinicals.

For those who got in: Congrats. You will succeed. Keep your head up, stay focused, and know there are are peaks and valleys in this Nursing school journey. If you have a hard day, just focus on taking things one day at a time.

IndyIvy, thank you for the encouragement. I've been reading through the posts in this thread and some people seem to be a bit down. I found your post refreshing, uplifting, and full of hope. Thank you for posting.

Yes, IndyIvy, thank-you. My happiness has turned into a bundle of nerves! My son suffered an extreme electrical burn that resulted in the loss of two limbs several years ago. Becoming a nurse has been my dream and goal ever since. With one hurdle passed, I realize there is one heck of a climb ahead!

Awesome post, IndyIvy!!!

Ericka I completely agree with you. I mean I have been going to school for two years and it just seems wasted. They knew that enrollment has skyrocketed in the last few years so why wouldn't they expand their program. I am so disappointed right now, I am a single mom which I know doesn't make me any different from any other mom, but I really want to have a great job so that I can give my daughter a great life and do something that would make me a great role model for her. Too many times single, young mothers end up trying to scrape by and have such a hard life, I really just want something different for us. I still have the drive and I am not giving up, but it sure makes you almost feel like you want to after seeing the scores and realizing that you are probably going to have to retake a class to get an A and still have the chance of not getting in, it is crazy. I know they want the best but they need to figure out a way to accommodate more of the best I mean I thought that I did really well in school, I have all A's in every other class I have taken in 2 years of school besides the one and I got an 89% so it's just really disappointing, and not to sound whiny, but is really unfair to all of you great girls on here. Straight A's is not what makes a great nurse.

Unfortunately, it's not as easy as just opening more spots. There's a shortage of nursing instructors and Ivy Tech doesn't pay their entry level nursing instructors very much (the director of the Bloomington ASN program is the one who told my class this, so I count it as a reliable source). Also, there is limited clinical space (depending on what campus you're at this can be a bigger issue). In Bloomington, all of the IU and Ivy Tech students only have just Bloomington Hospital to do clinicals at, so it's hard to have more nursing students if there's just not an open space for them to actually do their clinical hours. I'm sure that they would love to take more students, but they can unfortunately only do so much.

Congratulations to all of those who have been accepted, good luck to those who are still waiting, and good luck to those who will be trying again next semester. You'll get there!

thank you for the prayers renee. my family has been praying about this for the past 6 months =-) i applied to kokomo & logansport's lpn programs. praying for kokomo since i live 15 minutes away. nursing is where my heart is. my baby girl is 4 years old and has undergone 24 surgeries to date. i want to be able to give back. god has placed this on my heart and i know it's where i belong. i graduated from ivy tech in 2008 with a degree in criminal justice and could care less about that degree now. it's all about nursing and the kids :D

i had no idea i wanted to be a nurse until my sister and i took on the full care of our dad while he was terminally ill. i was pregnant with my first child and had uncontrollable morning sickness (that lasted all freaking day). it was the hardest thing i ever went through in my life caring for him, trying to make him better, but knowing there was no hope for recovery. the confusion of it was terrible: being pregnant and expecting your first child is supposed to be the happiest time of your life coupled with the sadness of losing a parent so young which is the worst pain in the world (2nd to losing a child). if only the school could realize that it is experiences like these that made us want to be nurses...i'm sure we would be top of the acceptance list.

Great post, IndyIvy. I think that Ivy Tech has a wonderful Nursing program, but I do wish that more people could have the opportunity. I'll keep all of you who are still waiting for letters in my thoughts. :redbeathe And for those who didn't get in this semester - please don't give up hope! If being a nurse is your dream, there's no reason to let anything get in the way of it. It may take a lot of perseverance and a little time, but it'll pay off in the end! :)

For all you who applied at Bloomington Ivy Tech... have you received your letter yet? I haven't gotten anything. Starting to worry more! :uhoh3:

i didn't apply at btown but did columbus....and still waiting:sniff:.....im starting to get a little upset though at the level of unprofessionalism of ivytech. these are ppls lives that they have in their hands, and either way,we all deserve to know yes or no so that we can make plans. sschool starts mon and the deadline for refund is friday....anyone else in this boat?
