It's going to take me 3 years to earn ADN. Does that sound right?

Silly me thought that the ADN would take me 2 years and that included pre-reqs and core program. Tonight I mapped out each semester and the classes I'll be taking (which includes ALL pre-reqs..I'm starting from scratch) and if I figured it correctly, I'll be graduating in August of 2014. :crying2:

I really thought I'd be done in 2 years. (Actually, more like 2.5 since I'm not ready for college Algebra and have to take 2 extra math classes..)

And this is best case scenario, i.e. I pass all classes, get into the program with the first application, etc. It's a bit of a reality check and a big bummer.

How long are you expecting your ADN will take?

3 years woulda been great cause mine took 4!

Every once in a while you run into some mutant who took all their prereqs concurrently, but that is mostly a thing of the past.

'Way back, hospital-based diploma RN used to be always 3 years. Then the associate degree was created, and it might be possible to complete it in 2 years, but the only people I have actually seen accomplish that were the ones who started their college work in their senior year of high school, and adults like me that completed other degree(s) and prereqs before they started the actual nursing program. So, 3 years does not seem excessive to me. The BSRN bridge can be done online and usually completed in 1 year. And the diploma RN, the associate degree RN, and the BS RN all can sit for the exact NCLEX-RN. So all of that tells me that it would be okay to take 3 years to get it nailed down.

When I am all done, it will have taken me a total of 4 years and that is with me getting in my nursing program on the first try. I started my prereqs in the fall of 09 and since then, I have taken 11 classes. There is no way that I would have been able to take 11 class in one year (summer included). I graduated back in 96 so with being out of school for a while plus having 4 kids; I just couldn't do it. I will be starting NS in about two weeks, and even though I have taken 11 classes so far, I still need 3 non nursing classes. I needed 14 non nursing classes total.

Also, I wanted to add that we do have a hospital based program here and you can earn your ADN in just two years. I was accepted and was supposed to start last Jan., but it turned out that a lot of my classes would not have transferred and I would have been starting all over again. So I declined acceptance and stayed where I was. Honestly, I probably would have failed because each semester was just way too much!

When all is said and done for me.....it will have taken me 4 years to earn an ADN. When I first started my journey to NS, I was taking pre-reqs part time. That took 2 years. I will graduate NS in May 2013.

Sure, it took awhile. However, I didn't have any other options.

Yeah your not alone on this by the time i grad in May of 2012 i will have taken me 3.5 years (messed up my second semester)....but i'm still reaching my goals, most people in my program it takes them about 3yrs including pre-reqs! also in my program if you finished it in 2 years you would have about 20 credits for thw 1st 3 semesters lol...i'll happily do it in 3.5 years

I spent two years doing pre-requisites and start an ADN program this fall. I originally wanted to get into a two year BSN program which required: general bio, 3 A&P courses, microbiology, nutrition, algebra, general math, statistics, intro to chem, inorganic chem, biochem, english, critical thinking or technical writing, general psych, abnormal psych, developing psych, sociology, communication, public speaking, art, a year of foreign language and a music course. These were needed to apply to the university as a transfer and to apply to the nursing program! At universities here you can't apply as a freshman nursing student, you have to have pre-requisites for the nursing program done and university transfer courses done. So I have two years of pre-reqs and now have two years of school left to complete my ADN. I wish I could go into the BSN program but I can not afford it which I wish I knew before doing all the pre-reqs!

My goal is to be done with pre reqs before I start the nursing program. Doing so I may have to take A&P during the summer ugh!!

I will be doing the same thing. AP II and college algebra. Probably a bad idea?

I have read many a posts that people have shared with taking a&p over the summer or online or with micro and they have stated it was hard work no walk in the park at all. With that being said they have said it still can be done. I'm just not sure how I feel about ut yet for myself.

It will take me 4 years from start to finish. I have 2 years of pre-req's because I have to take pre req's for some of the pre req's:confused:. I will also be taking some co -req's starting next semester. I am planning on applying to BSN programs also so I could be looking at 6 years but it's all ok in the end. I don't "have" to work & Dh supports my passion.
