I try to be early and do not expect to be paid. Whenever I stay late, I bill for the time. I may also provide an explanation (I use an invoice as I am an Agency Nurse). If I do not get a lunch because of demands of work, I also bill for the time (my invoice reads, no relief or whatever is applicable). This is a labor issue for most employers and must be paid accordingly.
In our unit we also work 7 -7 (day / night) and we are generally expected to be on duty 15 minutes earlier and invariably it can take a bit more than 15 minutes to hand over at the end of the shift. I often find I have more like a 13 hour day but we don't get paid for the additional time spent at work.
I wish we had it that good here!
I have tried discussing this where I work. I work 7p-7a in ICU. Days works 7a to 730p. Well, we have an overlap at noc, but not in am. Noone agrees that this should be changed. I am just automatically expected to be here 1/2 to an hour late every morning. I am not happy about it at all, but of course noone cares.

I was just wondering if it's normal that when you work a 12 hr shift- say 7pm to 7am, that you are expected to be there 15 minutes early and stay 15 minutes later in order to receive/make report?And if yes, does this get payed separately? Because the hours do add up if you're doing this 3 times a week, the whole year round.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Are you getting paid for 12 hours or 11 1/2 hours?
I used to work at a place where night shift was from 11-7. We were not scheduled a lunch break and we always got out late. A few months after I started working there, we were told that we had to work until 0730, and we were given, and I quote "a thirty minute break during which we were not responsible for our patients". Dream on!
We were told this was mandatory, it was State Law, and we had to be given that 30 minute break.
If they are expecting you to be there from 1845-0715, and you have your 30 minute break as well, and are paid 12 hours, then that adds up correctly. Check your State law for that info.
If you are required to be at your job 15 minutes before/after start time to take report/give report, darn skippy I would add that to my time card without thinking once about it. Your employers are ripping you off by not paying you for this time. Check with your state labor board if you are unsure.
