Is there a test to determine which area of nursing you are best for?

Published

Hi! I'm just wondering if anybody knows of a test that helps nurses ascertain which areas of nursing they are best suited for? I have a couple years of experience in Med Surg and LTC behind me. I don't know if either one is right for me in the long run, these are the areas where I have been able to obtain employment. Don't know what to plan toward/ where to go from here! I appreciate any help

It told me CNM, Transplant, or substance abuse. Too bad I'm not really about babies or psych patients.

They seemed to have missed the ED/cardiac algorithm entirely in this whole little link. Those would be my two!

Here's mine. I think I took this before actually. Well, I do have a BA is Psych, so...

I got that too and I also have a BA in Psych. Lol -- definitely NO!

Um, JnJ may want to take a second look at their algorithms. Even my husband laughed when he saw my results. I guarantee that I am NOT suited to be a substance abuse nurse. I think I would be sad all the time as a transplant nurse, and possibly the same with an HIV/AIDS nurse. I love doing wound care, I love educating. Not seeing anything like that in this assessment for me.

Sounds like we got pretty similar results. My number one was substance abuse, with alternatives as HIV/AIDS nurse, transplant nurse, and domestic violence nurse.

That stuff couldn't be farther from what I have actually found I enjoy, except maybe the transplant part. I actually really did enjoy my psych rotation in nursing school, though, especially the substance abusers hall of the local behavioral health hospital. I thought they were funny and witty - got the evil eye from a mental health tech when I snorted and laughed when one of the pot heads interrupted a heroin addict to say, "Dude, lay off that stuff. Pot is so much better!" I couldn't work with them because I'd be getting into trouble for hanging out with the patients instead of getting my work done. A lot of my friends IRL are either now or have been in the past substance abusers/pill poppers/alcoholics, so I think I just get along with those people better than regular people.

I went to the link on pg 1; the test to see what kind of nursing would suit you.....

Says I'd be good as a School Nurse.

Told me I should be in the OR or Recovery Room. Don't know about OR, my feet probably couldn't take all the standing in one place and the gowns/masks are so hot.

No gown for the nurse, and you're always walking... Or sitting.

Yes. It's called Life.

Not being snarky, but what sounds like a good fit on paper may not work out in reality. Good luck!

That is true. I have almost 8 years LVN SNF experience and when I did my RN clinical i saw myself working in Psych and Med Surg as well ( but not OB/Peds) Paper test will not really determine that you will like working in that particular area.

Cheers 💊💉

I got a military nurse. Wouldn't mind at all!

When I was in nursing school I asked God to please get me through my Peds & Psych rotations and I promised Him I'd never go back to those areas as a nurse. Now I'm a school nurse in a K-8 school and I really, really love it so you really never know! I hold strong to my promise to never work psych, though!!

The test told me I should be a Plastic Surgery Nurse. Wha?!? I have tossed the idea of being an OR nurse around in my head but this school nurse schedule is the bomb. I don't think I could ever give it up.

Certified Nurse Midwife... haha... I pretty much stood as far back as I could and prayed for it to be over during my L&D clinicals. Really seriously not my bag.

It told me I should be a CNM too. :)

Haha me too!! I'm far from it.
