Is 42 too old to start Nursing school

I'm turning 42 next month and I keep questioning myself if I'm too old to be wanting to apply to the nursing program. I've completed all my prerequisites and just need to pass my TEA's exam in order to apply to WEstern Governers University. My fiancé is very supportive as well as my 20 and 14 year old daughter and son. I guess my concern is, will I get hired at my age being a newly grad. as opposed to all the younger grads. I've worked in healthcare as a coordinator for 20 years and I've always wanted to become an RN so I have the passion for it. I just would like to hear if anyone else my age is also going through the RN program and have any advice??

I'm confused by your signature line... you already have an ADN? If so, what's stopping you from taking NCLEX? If you have an Associate's degree in some other subject, it's not an ADN(ursing).

Based on the number of "am I too old" threads here on AN, there are a lot of people who begin their nursing education journey in their 40's & 50's. According to current US Social Security rules, you have another 25 years to work before you reach your normal retirement age. So - IMO, it's probably worthwhile to invest in additional education needed to make a career switch at this point. Just don't incur a lot of debt to do it.

We've got several members of our 32 person cohort who are older than 40. Go for it.

I went to nursing school when I was 55. It was hard, but worth it. I was encouraged by my teachers telling me that being older could be an asset. I say go for it.

44 and just finishing up my pre-reqs this semester. I've applied and will wait till July to hear if I got in or not.

I say go for it. It's hard work - but worth it so far!

You have a passion for nursing, your husband is supportive, you're capable if you've completed the prereq's, so why not take the next step? Never let fear stop you from achieving your dreams. Fear is the opposite of faith. Have faith in yourself - in your desire, determination, and calling. You'll be tested along your journey, I was. On my first day of clinicals, my new instructor looked me dead in the eyes and said in front of all my classmates, "You don't belong here. I will personally make sure you don't graduate." She was true to her word. She continued to badger me every semester. Everytime I was tempted to quit, I remembered her words and used that memory to push forward until December 8, 2008 - Graduation Day when I thanked her! By the way, I was 56 y/o. I'm still working and still love nursing. I've never had trouble getting hired - I've got wisdon and years of experience in my corner.
