Is Nursing Really So Bad...or is it dependent on hospital

Published

I have noticed through talking to many people that some nurese say they love their work, and other's say they absolutley hate and I should run as fast as I can away from it. I have noticed though that the one's that hate it come from certain hospitals and the one's that love it come from other hospitals (or even just different floors). Is the quality of being a nurse dependent mostly on where you work?

thank you tweety.

you indeed said it very well.

and til a person has walked a few 1000 miles in our dirty ole nursing shoes, I DO NOT think he or she DOES really understand. You said it well as far as how I feel.

Nancy, excellent points, as well. Some people need to be reminded, myself including.

You said it right Deb, tweety and Nancy, I couldn't have said it better.

Doncha just love people who aren't even nurses yet, telling those of us who have walked the walk how nursing should be, and how nurses should feel.

Graduate, get your license, work a couple years, then maybe you'll have a clue. There are days I love being a nurse, and days that it tries my patience beyond what I can bear. But what makes me more exasperated is judgemental attitudes from newbies who have nothing to base their opinions on. :(

I totally agree, I love my job, but there are days I'm worn out. The paperwork is the worst to me. If I could just do the "hands-on", I would be soooo happy.

I came into nursing late, I have done other things. Maybe that makes me appreciate this job more.

whoa! LMAO!

I stated my feelings and I guess I came off wrong - looking back I guess I was looking at an entirely different thing than ya'll

And if I rubbed anyone the wrong way I apologise - but I WAS NOT in any way telling anyone "how nursing should be" or anything like that! I have no idea where that comes from!

Maybe reread my post? I said and still say anyone who TRULY HATES any job owes it to themselves to get another! And really the key phrase is OWES IT TO THEMSELVES

Be it another in the same field or if they truly hate that field then find another!

Each of us only have one life here on this earth and our time is much too short to spend it doing something we hate - period

How can anyone disagree with that?

Not that there isn't something we have about any job we dislike - that is every job anyone ever has - I am talking about what I thought the original poster meant - People who hate their job - truly hate it

Yes I am a "newbie" in this "field"

And I have a lot to learn about it and will never stop learning

But this in my opinion has nothing to do with the "field" - I am not a newbie in life LOL

Learned a lot of lessons there the hard way and this was one of them - And I had a little help with this particular lesson - Had a therapist tell me basically the same things I am saying - We have no control over anyone but ourselves - "We can't do anything about the past but we can do something about the present and the future - If you don't like where you are it is up to you to do something about it" were her exact words

True or not?

Amen to what ALL the REAL Nurses said. ;)

Bedpan...one day you'll be able to comprehend what us Real Nurses are sharing here. We understand where you are at as a student or graduate (by the way...which one are you?), but you do not understand where we are at --- yet. :)

Hi bedpan :) The statement "I said and still say anyone who TRULY HATES any job owes it to themselves to get another! And really the key phrase is OWES IT TO THEMSELVES " is something I agree with.

Also, I think those kind of people are few and far between on this board. The overwhelming majority of us don't truly hate nursing. But we need a lot of support from one another to stay sane and to cope.

I don't quite understand fab4fan's reaction, since you weren't addressing your statements to nurses generally and telling them how to feel , just a very small few who hate nursing, yet remain in it. I would just ignore that post.

(The above was edited to remove what was percieved as a personal attack. My apologizes)

I used to work with someone who constantly griped about how much she hated being a nurse, total lack of compassion. I wanted to slap her and scream "why don't you QUIT!".

I think there are some that if they had to do it over again would do something else. Ask me in ten more years, maybe I'll regret not being the accountant I started out to be. LOL

I think what Deb, myself, cherfuldoer, etc. were saying that maybe some of us who come here and gripe and cry and carryon about nursing don't really seriously hate it, and that's something you need experience to understand. I hope I'm not sounding patronizing, because I don't mean to be.

Tweety, as usually, you said that beautifully. I agree with all ya all. I have only been a nurse for 5 yrs. In that 5 yrs. I have worked with plenty of nurses who were very frustrated and vented alot somtimes to access. However in that time there has only been one nurse who really seemed to hate her job and ALL it intailed. She had no compassion, no patience, and no common curtousy. Someone (management with guts) finally did tell her if you hate your job so much LEAVE and she did. Was the best thing for her and definately for those who may be left in her care. Point is it is a rare nurse who is still working as a nurse that truely hates their profession, usually just the BS that goes with it. Bedpan take heart we bark but rarely bite.

For 15 years I have been a nurse. I never loved or hated a job more in my life. I am extremely proud of what I do and the impact I have on my patients' lives however, the amount of excrement that we are forced to shovel through (and it has grown exponentially) by way of increased paperwork, grumpy patients/family, and management who haven't had a reality check in years can wear one down. Ergo, at times I hate this job and wouldn't at all mind a job involving the phrase "would you like fries with that?".

Having said that my fellow nursing brethren (and sistern?!?), it's good to be a nurse.

I edited an above post. I publically apologize for the flame I included in reference to fab4fan. While I still don't understand her reaction, calling her a name was inappropriate.
