I have noticed through talking to many people that some nurese say they love their work, and other's say they absolutley hate and I should run as fast as I can away from it. I have noticed though that the one's that hate it come from certain hospitals and the one's that love it come from other hospitals (or even just different floors). Is the quality of being a nurse dependent mostly on where you work?

there are good and bad things as with everything. but by and large the benifit does not out way the cost. the cost on your body and your family and your emotional well being is not worth it. there are many other ways to help people that are worth it.

Hmmm...
"Is nursing that bad?" What a simple yet complicated question---
Well it depends......
It depends on the day.....
the attitude of.....
....the nurse him/herself
....the people around him/her
the nurse you ask..
the work enviromnent she/he is in
whether he/she feels "trapped" in their career or..
...feels blessed/honored to be doing it or...
...likes it well enough if only if a *few* things could change
....or just plain loves it and always has, no matter what comes at them
what kind of shift he/she just pulled when you asked this question....some are doozies, others are grand.
....the patients and family he/she took care of that day ---again some are doozies, some are grand
...whether he/she feels they are aqeduately compensated for their work.......and no, not just about $$$$
....see, it just depends on so many things.
I love what I do.....
but not all the time. I am human. I get tired of feeling like I am being used or abused like YOU would or any other human with respect for him/herself .
In that, nursing is no different than any other career. Whether it's "that bad or not" depends a lot of things and the attitude of the person you ask.
Read thru the many thread in "Would you Recommend Nursing as a Career? forum, and see for yourself what people are saying.
Best wishes.
I love what I do....
when I am able to do it unfettered by lack of proper equipment and a safe environment in which to do my job.
I came into nursing REALLY to help and care for people.....
sometimes that is tough when mountains of paperwork stand in my way---and it gets worse all the time.
So is nursing "all that bad"? Yes and No.
Just depends on the day you ask me.
Follow your heart....that is the rule anytime and in anything you do!

Happiness comes from within - you have to be happy with yourself in order to help others. It is somewhat dependent on the hospital, but moreso on the individual nurses - what your tolerance level is. Good luck...

I agree with the above but also nursing is what you make it. Good luck

Love your response Smilingblueyes. As you mentioned it really depends on the nurse and what they want in a career. Sometimes we confuse the sometimes crappy work conditions with the career. As for myself, i was not crazy about it and saw it as an entry point to get into anesthesia, but I do know some who really love bedside nursing. God bless them, we certainly need more nurses who really enjoy their careers, however, the work conditions are playing a big part with the exodus from the bedside of good nurses. I hope it changes so that we can retain good nurses.

I too have heard from those who say they hate being a nurse and honestly can't understand it at all
The question I always wonder is - if one hates a job so much (ANY job - not just Nursing) why are they still doing it?
Maybe they should get up off thier butts and look for a Nursing job at another hospital or in a different field of Nursing? Are they waiting on the Nursing Fairy to come along and wave a magic wand and make everything better or what?
And if it is truly the Nursing profession they hate well, it honestly isn't for everyone - There are many other jobs out there - Might not be easy to find, might not pay as much, but my thoughts are anything is better than a job you hate! NO job is worth having to go to every day if you hate it - If nothing else keep the present job while searching for something else! Don't just continue on day in and day out dragging yourself to work and complaining about it!
A last thought - if one is a nurse and truly hates their job it doesn't seem to me that they could honestly give their best which would certainly be an injustice to those who they should be there giving thier best for - not the hospital nor even themselves - but the patients
What a shame
bedpan...
with all due respect.
you may come to understand more....
when you actually enter the profession.
meantime, you are right. you don't understand.
i wish you well.
ok SmilingBluEyes - with all due respect to you also - please explain it to me
Meaning this truly respectfully with no anger or without being upset at all - what part(s) of my post do you take issue with?
If someone truly hates their present job, why not look for another elsewhere in the field?
If one truly hates nursing, why do they not go into something else?
You do not agree that no job is worth putting up with if you truly hate it?
Seriously, I reread my post and do not understand what you are referring to - I in no way ever mentioned anyone just blowing off steam or who had a bad day - my post plainly states "those of people who truly hate their job"
And yes I have had jobs that I truly hated - thus I am no longer there!
Thanks
in an economy like this you have to ask???

bedpan, I guess you and deb are talking indeed about two different types of people.
I would venture to say most of us are like Deb, have a love/hate relationship with nursing and our jobs.
If someone absolutely truly hates nursing day after day, I question too like you. Why stay?
My relationship is much is very much love hate. Love being a nurse, love working with people in their time of need, love assessing and making a difference based on the knowledge and experience I have.
Hate working with short staff, hate the paperwork, hate working with people who aren't team players, hate dealing with family and patients that are grumpy and mean.....
So if I come to this board and say I hate nursing. Please don't ask me "why don't I just leave". I'm only venting.

With the critical shortage of nurses willing to work under present conditions, we cannot afford to say "If you hate nursing, why not leave the profession," because too many have already left.
Recent studies have linked nurse staffing to the very survival of patients; we need to fix things NOW, instead of inviting more nurses to leave.
We're all going to need a nurse someday.
