hey,

after watching scrubs and house.. i wanted to know.. do nurses exist in the US? Or do the doctors take obs and give meds.. like they do in house? if so.. what do nurses do?

haha.. im not being sarcastic.. i know you guys do the same as aussie nurses.. but where the hell do these sterotypes come from? its just a disgrace.. doctors dont hang out on the wards with the odd nurse walking past every 10 mins.. at least not at my hosptial!

Please write your concerns and your false impression of nursing to the Hollywood people that make the shows and the idiots they get to write the episodes!!! I would like to do the same but I am in nursing school an have very little time on my hands.

By the way, I was talking about this the other day with nurses while I was on break. I hate shows like House and ER because of the massive number of doctors they have on duty and the lack of nursing staff. It is not only unrealistic even in a TEACHING hospital, but it is not fair to the nursing profession. People are shocked when they come to a hospital here in the US and do not see a doctor but are always engaging with nurses who do more then fluff pillows!

HAHAHA!

House is one of my favorite shows, but c'mon! Not only do they walk patients to their cars, they perform brain surgery! My goodness, there's nothing those brilliant young docs can't do!

It's Hollywood, not reality TV.

The shows are trying to be funny and dramatic. They're trying to emphasize certain characters and create experiences for those characters to undergo. They're trying to maintain continuity. They're trying to build emotional connection with their characters.

They couldn't care less about reality -- geez, it's entertainment.

Of course, I gave up watching television about 5 years ago so I really couldn't care less what they show. Even when I did watch it, I didn't delude myself into thinking that it represented reality at all.

It's fiction, through and through.

Tiij, if a doctor spends 5 minutes in a patients room a day, that is usually 4 minutes longer than the standard. During the day, I seldom see a doctor, they are usually at their office or on the golf course. You are cute!! Ha.

They usually pay for my green fees also. And usually pay for what I win in bets from them also.

lol- yea I always laugh when I see the drs on House giving meds. Rediculous. Wouldn't happen. Then...with 4 of them standing there monitoring the pts reaction to said med....hmm...right!

My ex used to refuse to watch House or any other medical show with me....they would make me so mad when I watched them that I would tell him how things would "really be" and he just refused to even consider watching them with me. Favorite case in point, when pt. has an oral ET Tube with about a square inch of tape on it....and then pulls it out. If that's all the tape you are going to put on it, then, Of course they are going to pull it out!!

I like scrubs though....but still told my sister when we were watching that that there was NO WAY that Carla, one of 2 nurses on the show, could not have gone to college at all.

No, nursing is really not like that here. It makes me frustrated that our profession still gets that bad rap on TV like that...

Scrubs is probably more accurate than the others....

Well... maybe a tad exaggerated :lol2:

They all are rediculous, I used to love Grey's Anatomy, after I saw Merideth come back to life after being "dead" and with hypothermia for multiple hours, come back to life, and TALKING, I've just given up! None of those shows are anywhere close to real life, and I feel that it can really give nurses a bad rep. Anyhow, it is sometimes fun to watch, but it's hard to enjoy it when you know it's completely false!

House is a druggie

I refuse to watch that show at all anyway
